Starting line up for 2012-13

I believe the line-up for the first game will look something like this.

C- God's Gift, just because he is a senior and has the Big East experience
PF- Jakkar Sampson, because he is a beast, and will make an impact from day one
SF- Amir Garrett, with the work he did at the end of last year he should be in the starting line-up
SG- 3LO
PG- Phil Greene, When I went to the first exhibition game of the season I thought he would be a shooter off the bench but, he improved a great deal in his first year and will start until Branch can play.

However in December I expect Obekpa to be starting at center and Branch to be starting PG.

But knowing Lavin this line-up will change from game to game.

What is scary is for the first time in a while you can make arguments at every position (Except SG), because we have the depth where guys not starting will be very good players.

Agreed. This could look like a hockey game or the Carolina teams during Dean's days where we have 5 guys coming on and off the court at the same time. We should be able to run teams into the ground with our D and explosiveness.

First game starting team of Greene, D'Lo, Amir, Sir'Dom and Gift. IMO, it's only right. These guys fought the wars last year. This team deserves to take the court first. Ater the tip, everything will change. Guys like Sanchez, Jakarr, Bourgault etc will all be in within 5 -10 minutes and we'll be mixing it up.

With our style and system, the "starting lineup" means almost nil. We will be able to hit up our bench with waves of top 100 kids. I can't wait!

I think Bourgault could be a good #2 SG I have read that he is not only a great 3-point shooter and but a great score and good defensively as well. So all positions could be argued for but, I do see 3LO not starting unless an injury. (knock on wood)

Lav is really high on him and he's been pretty spot on with his predictions the last 2yrs with regards to players

Nobody sees Branch as the starting PG within a couple of games?

Branch not available til second semester. Then it is up for grabs, but I think he will take a good chunk from Phil Greene. Branch is more of a pure PG with great vision.

I think the important things is that is season we might have enough experience returning and enough depth and talent to avoid some of the early losses due to "learning curve" and lack of depth. I'd love us to make some noise early in these tourneys like the one in Charleson and best up on South Carolina as well as some of the other early games. Those count in win total and could help our case down the stretch. Interesting to see who we play twice this season as well.

No, because he cannot play until the second half of the season because he has to sit out a full year after transferring to SJU. Come December, however, I think he gets the bulk of the PG minutes, even though I'm a big fan of Greene's.

Edit: Sorry, I didn't see MCNPA's response until after I posted.

Won't be eligible till right before Xmas

I was including that. He's not ineligible for practice, and there should be the former Holiday Tourney (not sure how that works) and a game or 2 before the BE schedule starts, I would think.

This was exactly my school of thought. I know he's ineligible, I guess should have added that. I don't expect him to start from his first day.

Doesn't anyone see Balamou contributing? Lavin has a long time love affair with super athletic guards....

C Obekpa
PF Sampson
SF Pointer
SG Harrison
PG Branch

That's the lineup for big east play with Amir, Sanchez, Greene being major contributors off the bench, GG plays 15-18 per game and Bourgault spelling players for a few minutes per game. That lineup is pretty darn athletic.

I'd say while there are some contentious positions Jakarr and Harrison are obvious choices to start. If Greene plays very well in November and December you'd think he'd get the nod. Pointer and Amir is the most intriguing competition and I am certain no matter what the outcome both will push each other to be better which will inevitably help the team. GG isn't my type of player to man the middle so if anyone were to supplant Obekpa it would be Sanchez IMO. That would be a smaller lineup but our front court depth has vastly improved over the past 15 hours so who cares cause we are gonna run teams out of the gym regardless baby

I like your thinking and believe in that philosophy, but Sampson will start from the word "go". Sampson wants to be a one-and-done guy, or go after his sophomore year. To be honest, Lavin probably does too (although he'd love that 2nd year), it does nothing but add to his credibility in recruiting going forward. Sampson made it pretty clear that he came to SJU because of the NBA coaching tree.

I think his size and athleticism will position him in the starting line-up and play close to 30 minutes per game. He's probably the second most talented kid on the team (granted he is behind in experience, but pure talent).

Anyway, my projected starting line-up for 1st game of season:

C: Gift
PF Sampson
SF Pointer
SG Harrison
PG Greene

Starting line-up for majority of BE play

C: Sanchez (Gift off the bench) - clearly not paying a true "C" position.
PF Sampson
SF Garrett
SG Harrison
PG Branch

FKA how come you see Garrrett getting the start come BE play but not in November? Just curious.
I think you're right on the money with you Big East lineup though.

I see Lavin going very deep into this bench. Yes, I see Balamou contributing. We have sooo many interchangeable parts this season that it's crazy. All are mega athletic and provide different things. Lavin will find minutes for all of these guys. Gift might lose the most minutes because I think we might favor slightly "smaller" lineups with lots of wings coming in droves at teams. We will play aggressive ball this year and substitute a lot. Like prior seasons, Lavin will play the bench early as he wants to have the entire team playing their best ball the second half of the season. I know we're still young, but I don't think SJU has ever been this deep with quality depth before in our history.

I think Garrett will find his offense and shooting a bit more this season. He really cameon late last season. I think he'll be a good one. I hope Pointer just works on his offense all offseason.
