Starting 5?
Pretty sure mj that SJU is trying to get a waiver for Steere to play right away since he only played like 10 minutes in their first game of their season. Don’t think they got an answer yet so I think it’s still possible he can play right away. Maybe have him sit just the first game. Regardless don’t think they got a ruling yet on that situation. Unless someone heard something about it.
He has no claim to a waiver since it was his choice to quit the team after one game. He stayed at school through the semester and was eligible.

Since Coach Mike has a history/style of playing a lot of guys (virtually no one will play over 30 minutes) maybe it is better to think about the 9/10 player rotation as in all likelihood 5 to 9/10 will be playing 15 plus minutes, something we have not seen. Depth will contribute to our success .

I still can't believe Steere won't be able to play during the first semester. CFB has even changed it's rules on eligibility. You can now play 3 games in a season and not lose a year of playing time (see Jalen Hurts). Kind of harsh to make a student athlete sit an entire year for a few minutes in one game.

Yes in football you can play up to 4 games and still take a redshirt for the season. FWIW Jalen Hurts played in almost every game last year except when injured and did not take a redshirt.

That is a CFB rule and is based on the fact that so many players are redshirted their freshman year. It also allows a player not to burn a season if they are needed later in the season. That however is not a college basketball rule so it should not apply. The waiver is to ensure he keeps his freshman eligibility. When you transfer you have to sit a year unless you are graduate and have eligibility left or you get a hardship waiver (like Heron to be closer to home and his ailing mother).

Hurts as was mentioned played in every game for Bama last season except for three after having ankle surgery and is eligible to play without sitting because he graduated early (in December) and still has a year of eligibility left.

Kelly Bryant s a more appropriate comparison as he started Clemson’s first four games last year at QB before being replaced by Trevor Lawrence and decided to leave the team and transfer preserving his last year of eligibility and not having to sit out this year at Missouri.

Not according to Zagsblog : can’t post link for some reason. But it clearly states that SJU is trying to get a waiver for him to begin the season eligible to play & no ruling has been made yet. Just Google - “ Steere, SJU seeking waiver to play right away, Zagsblog” Whether he gets it or not is another thing but with the NCAA changing their rules EVERYDAY I think we have a shot..lol

btw - In the article Steere sounds fairly confident he will get the waiver.

It seems possible that Steere could also be using a slightly more esoteric angle, relating somehow to ncsu’s recent coaching scandals and departures. I don’t know how it’s being petitioned and I don’t know who recruited him there, but the school’s recent tumult as a reason to leave could be plausible enough to pass him through immediately. Just a thought.

That sounds a bit out there but you never know. Was he recruited to NC St by Gottfried? Coaching changes haven't been effective reasons for this before but I guess it's worth a try.

Edit: Just checked and he committed in October 2017 so to the present Coach Keatts.

What about Dunn? Since he ALREADY sat out a year and the coach who recruited him left the school before he could play for him. I thought kids in his position get to transfer without sitting out ANOTHER year when he already has paid that punishment. I’m guessing he gets to play right away this season. Anyone else hear anything about his status?

No, but I think Dunn has a stronger case than Steere
Having said that, I'm obviously rooting for both to be granted waivers

I want both to win too, but if we had to win only one, I'd want it to be Dunn, since we are going to get Steere later in the season anyway.

Tough to talk starting 5 when (I would guess) most of us haven’t seen a good number of these kids play yet. Outside of MH and LJ this season is the great unknown. Even some of the returners who some are putting in the starting line up have limited experience. I would expect that Coach MA has an idea of who he would like to see start but their will be much juggling in the early season to see who steps forward. Get ready, this is going to be a “learning” season for all. On top of that we have a couple of kids who may miss valuable early season time because of eligibility issues. Buckle up this is going to be a bumpy albeit an expected ride.

At some point during season I want to see Williams, Dunn, Heron, Steere, and Figgy out there together.
