down six and Simon misses two fouls.
Just not a good night for our guards...
yet we are not out of this...bizarre

61-57. Tough call on Yakwe, could have been a charge. We have made a nice comeback. If we can get hot, we could steal this.

we are down six, having missed three inside shots on 3 trips..with a few missed fouls shots...and now another foul on Ponds as he drove in for a miss.
wacky game

Tariq has been great, as has Clark. Tough that Ahmed and Shamorie just can't hit an outside shot tonight. We could have easily stole this one, as ASAU has been shaky, but we played them tough. Should be exciting year.

This isn't a loss to feel bad about regardless of the score. A missed opportunity for sure but not a loss to feel bad about. Loved the way they attacked the paint in the second half and they need to do that in big east play because that will set up the outside shot. Bashir's 4th foul was bullhit call but that 5th foul was beyond bad and you have to be more aware to avoid that. The missed pass to ponds was total momentum killer and so was Hurley switching to Zone. It was like we didnt know what to do. Got to hit foul shots.

But this wasn't a bad loss by any stretch

The team should be extremely disappointed tonight. Ponds was truly horrendous, his sophomore slump continues. We can't keep playing terrible first halves. We let this great resume building win get away. Hopeful for what the future holds.

Ponds & Ahmed a combined 7-31. You will not win many games against good teams with those numbers. Shamorie was really off tonight. Good news is we can only get better and were in the game right to the end. Road trip a positive overall.

Pond was 6 of 23. You could have stopped there. What does Ahmed have to do with it?

Overall good effort coming back & defending very well in second half. Get LoVett back, win the remaining two out of conference games & run Providence out of the gym in BE opener, setting tone for nice season. Team has some warts, but appears to have enough weapons offensively, more of a commitment to defend & grit.

This was a game in three parts. For the first 17 minutes or so ASU dominated the game with quick offense and ball movement and built a 44-26 lead.

Then for the the next 21 minutes or so St. John's began to assert its defensive will and ASU started to wilt under pressure becoming discombobulated and not being able to run an effective offense. St. John's won this part of the game 44 to 27 and had cut the lead to one with under three minutes to go.

Then after a very bad turnover by Simon (when St. John's was about to take its first lead in the second half) ASU was able to get a couple of key buckets and St. John's was not able to effectively attack an ASU zone that Hurley went to late. This was followed by a parade of foul shots and it all added up to ASU finishing the last two and a half minutes of the game on an 11-0 run.

Without Lovett and with Ponds cold from the field St. John's was able to come from behind by imposing its will with defense. From where I sit this is a really good sign of things to come.

Despite bad free throw shooting and struggles on offense we could have won this game against an undefeated nationally ranked team. All of this was accomplished despite missing our second leading scorer with an injury and having our first and third leading scorers have terrible shooting nights. Additionally we played with six of our available eight players battling foul trouble for significant sections of the game.

It is also important to note that both Clark and Owens really came up very big tonight and kept us close.

The one thing I think we need to address going forward is our ability to recognize and attack a zone defense. Our inability to do that late were main factors in our loss to both Missouri and ASU.

Tough loss. Brutal turnover by Simon down 1. That AZ kid hits a 3 and total momentum swing. You gotta give the team credit, they turned up the pressure got back into the game. A lot of good things tonight. But they got too figure out how to be effective against a zone because we are gonna see it a lot until we figure it out. ........ if we have LoVett we win this game.

Ponds and Ahmed were God awful, almost as bad as the refs. Yet we were only down 1 late with the ball when the worst, most mindboggling pass of all time occurred. ASU turned that into a 3 and that's your ballgame. Still don't know what happened there, was Ponds talking to Mullin? How does that even happen.
