St. John's-William & Mary Game Thread

I love when Achiuwa shoots free throws the students hold up their hands in prayer.

Still need more students to catch on, but most of the student section also yells "amen!" instead of "woosh!" when it goes in

Couple of observations for my first game this season.

#1 That continued lack or air conditioning in bullshite. I think I might have to start taking  coumadin like most of the 80 year old alums that go to the games to cope with the heat.

#2 The only upside to the lack of air conditioning is that pretty soon the girls there will start going topless to deal with the heat.

#3 Nuri is even quicker than he looks on tv and is complete money around the hoop. But he really needs to work on the ft's.

#4 Everyone except for GG needs to work on those ft's it seems. There are going to be a lot of nail biter games this year at the end of games when we start getting hacked with leads.

#5 You feel bad because this team was born to run. I really hope Amir gets here in december. These kids are so quick it's crazy

Menopause, mj? It's actually pretty comfortable in there.

I agree. 5 or so years ago the heat was unbearable in CA, not anymore.

Could be. Maybe I'm just getting 41 year old hot flashes but I definitely wasn't the only one sitting around me that noticed it. Wearing a suit and tie definitely doesn't help me.

My friend who started season tickets with us this year was dying also and he was wearing a short sleeve shirt though.

Best thing about the sunday game is I'm wearing shorts to it

Having people sitting on your lap doesn't help the cause.

Yeah those are cramped we were so close to everyone else I could hear what they were thinking. I'm used to having my leg room with the railing up top. The only downfall is heat rises and it's even hotter in our other seats

Second half was awesome. No turnovers is amazing considering how fast we played.

Gift is so much better than I expected him to be coming in.

Mo makes it look so easy out there. His potential is through the roof.

Nuri has pretty good body control and really took over the second half. There are some times where i think he could have had nice kick outs for open shots but instead drove through contact.

Dom was great on D. He has the potential to be Paris Horne on steroids.

Deanelo had 14 points, and it was really quiet. If his shot was falling he could have had 20.

Phil was off but I like the way the team looks when hes in.

Stith did some good things in the second half but is a liability on offense.

OT: For those who watched the game on ESPNU - the announcers and the studio hosts kept harping on the upcoming Duke game, where coach K continues his path to surpass Bob Knight and his 903 wins as the winningest mens coach ever.

Just so you all know where I'm coming from, that crap ticks me off. Cause the winningest mens coach ever is a terrific coach named Harry Statham. 44 seasons at McKendree College, an NAIA school in Illinois. Harry has racked up 1,022 wins - and with 388 losses, that's a 72.5 winning percentage...

SAY Division 1 if that's what you mean. DON'T say winningest mens coach, when there's a guy still going strong who's got a 119 win advantage on your guy...

CA is always warm, but nowhere as hot as it was about 3 or 4 years ago. The maintaince staff must have done something in the building.

As far as the team is concerned, everyone needs to chill out a little..They are mostly freshmen, they will iron out some of the negatives over time. At times during this season it's not going to look pretty....Once the boys put it into second gear in the middle of the second half W+M went into full panic mode and we pulled away.....Zero turnovers in the second half, that's truly amazing...!
I have had season tickets for 20+ years and I've never seen a more talented group on the floor for St. John's. I would anticipate that a few of these freshmen will not make 4 years here, and be gone to the NBA draft probably after their Junior years (Hopefully with an NCAA tytle under their belts..)

Great effort tonight.....!!!!

you have to worry about the free throws. we can't possibly beat big east teams giving away a dozen or so points at the free throw line. rebounding is also an issue. we shouldn't be getting outrebounded by william and mary. the team has to play two halves. stith has to do better than look like a norm roberts throwback.

with all this, i'll still stick to my prediction of 18 wins...but we better get reinforcements soon!

Now I know what it feels like to have the horses to turn games around in a heart beat. In the last couple of years, SJU was the team that would play well early and then wilt under the pressure of an athletic opponent (think Louisville, Syracuse, West Virgina turning up the heat and blowing by with pressure defense and transition baskets). The second half was very impressive. We certainly have deficiencies (size, depth, free throw shooting) but man do we have quickness, length, athletic ability etc...going to be fun to watch. If we had the complete class, we would be scary good, lets hope we get 2 back in December.

A tale of two halves.
As good as the O was in the second half, the D was just as phenomenal. The pressure was great, but we were closing out on shooters that were killing us in the first half.

If last night's game was a harbinger of this season, we are in for a roller coaster of a ride. But then again, roller coasters are fun to ride! I'm looking forward to seeing these guys gel over the course of the season.

Felt strange not seeing Lavin on the bench.

What we forgt is that Willam and Mary has some really good three pt shooters an they were hitting those open shots . Does anyne know their shootng %

The way this team shoots free throws, I would like to see them holding up their hands for everyone who goes to the line.

Nurideen is exceptional with the ball in his hands and driving to the hoop, but, a good Big East team will be able to take that away from him if he doesn't prove that he can hit that 3pt shot from the top of the key. I haven't seen that from him yet in any of the three games.

Also, as athletic, fast and talented as these guys are, and they're great to watch, they are small except for GG. They really need Pelle to be eleigible in December and Amir too although he's not a big man. Amir provides needed depth. Otherwise, Lavin and staff might have to eventually see if they can get anything out of that Sam Seally kid, Even though he's a stringbean, he's a 6'8 - 6'9 stringbean.

All in all though it was great to watch and I think this will be a really fun team all year. I really like the way they interact with each other on the court. Like they're all in this together and they seem to really like each other, like brothers. It's good to see.

According to Nate Blue on twitter, Golden State Warriors scout Speedy Claxton was in attendance at the game last night.

 Very entertaining game. What potential!
Watching on TV, I thought I was watching the Yankee game with all the empty seats. How much are those seats?
