Final notes:
With 8 inductees, second 4 rows were reserved for their guests and each inductee brought large numbers of family and friends. Watching their beaming faces nursting with pride were worth the admission.
Bernard Rencher was eloquent, gracious and thankful for his selection. He spoke as much about his role as an academic advisor as he did about his playing days. His hs coach attended which often happens with local inductees. Bernard ended by acknowledging the audience saying "..because you are, I am, and We Are.. St. John’s."
Erin Brunner, one of our very best power hitting softball players brought a large contingency from her California home including her husband and young son. She holds single season marks in Rbi's (49), average (.439), walks, slugging %, and on base%. Her career all time records include 43 home runs, .360 batting avg, 148 rbi and 126 runs. Best of all 4 big east all academic awards.
Gus Alfieri is so infirmed he wasn't exoected to speak. Instead the school put together an amazingly good video biography, including his on court exploits, terrific coaching career at St. Anthony's, and his decades of running a great summer camp. I have a soft spot for him since when my kids were playing hs ball and we called for info, he spent 45 minutes on the phone asking about them and answering questions about the camp. Great man.
Three time big east goalkeeper of the year Diana Poulin, has program records for 43 wins and 32 shutouts. Also two nscaa scholar all american honors.
Finally, all time basketball great, Alliyah Handiford ended her career as our keading scorer with 2,058 points and is one of 4 players in our history to be selected in the WNBA draft. She got the best laugh of the night when she opened her acceptance speech by turning to the other inductees and saying, "I'm going to be soeech and not talk as much as y'all."
At the end of her brief speech Coach Carnesecca leaned over to the person seatex next to him and joked, "I think I liked hers best!"
Great night. Steve Dombroski and Mike Cragg (who resurrected the hof and built a permanent room for awards) deserve tons of credit, as do many others.
