This October we will add 8 new men and women to our Athletics HOF. this year we decided to add three man's basketball players to the Hall - Gus Alfieri, Bernard Rencher, and Greg "Boo" Harvey.

JSJ and I are honored to be part of the selection committee, which is comprised if some incredible people, former athletes, coaches, and administrators. Mike Cragg has done an amazing job resurrecting the dormant HOF when he arrived, and even constructed a new permanent HOF room where red white pregames are held.

Insofar as men's basketball considerations, we are incredibly fortunate to have Coach Carnesecca on committee. Coach C. at 98 is sharp as a razor and a strong voice advocating for considering players we may have overlooked. Then discussions the committee has are really great, collegial, and inclusive, as we seek to cover all sports, includong those with less visibility, and consider men and women equally. With former administrators like Ed Manetta and Kathy Meehan on committee, we have members that have actually watched thousands of athletes perform over the course of 75 years (which Coach c. Has an elephant's memory of).

When possible committee members will solicit input from current and former coaches and even teammates. The committee votes, but votes set the stage for dialogue and are not absolute. We want the inductees present, so some atheletes still playing professionally are typically unavailable and induction deferred.

We've had so many great athletes in all sports, a slew who played professionally, even some Olympians who won medals. It's really amazing to consider and the whole process and induction ceremony is a process and event where SJU shines brilliantly.

I'd love to hear your recollections of these athletes who will be inducted. Gus, Greg, and Bernard are guys who are very visible.

The induction is a wonderful fan event and the pre induction cocktail hour is a chance to meet and chat with inductees and other prominent attendees.

QUEENS, N.Y. (Aug. 29, 2023) – St. John's has unveiled the eight outstanding individuals,
who will be enshrined into its Athletics Hall of Fame as members of the Class of 2023. The honorees
of the 24th induction class in the Hall of Fame's history will be honored on Saturday, October 28
during the University's Homecoming Weekend.
The 2023 Athletics Hall of Fame class includes former student-athletes who achieved
excellence in their sport while representing St. John's on the national and international levels. This
year's cohort includes baseball All-American and Major League Baseball (MLB) first round selection
Craig Hansen, men’s basketball standouts Gus Alfieri, Greg “Boo” Harvey and Bernard Rencher,
women’s basketball’s all-time leading scorer Aliyyah Handford, BIG EAST Softball Player of the Year
Erin Burner, men’s soccer All-American Ben Hickey, women’s soccer All-American Diana Poulin.

I am too young (wow, I don't get to use that phrase often anymore) to have seen Alfieri play and didn’t see Rencher play other than a few times on TV. I know Alfieri was considered a great basketball mind and long-time coach at St. Anthony’s on Long Island (first located in Smithtown before moving and taking over the Holy Family High School campus in South Huntington) and is well respected. Rencher worked at St. John’s for many years and was also highly respected.

I first saw Boo play as a freshman at Andrew Jackson High School (now Campus Magnet) where he started in the back court with another freshman whose last name was Edwards (his first name escapes me but he had at least one older brother who played there also). Boo was really good then, a master ball handler and passer who could get to the rim. He was committed to going to Syracuse but had to go to San Jacinto first.

His junior year (first year here) with fellow backcourt mate and San Jacinto teammate Michael Porter (a former McD AA) was really good but after seating out a year due to academics, he came back with a vengeance, an improved knowledge on running a half court offense and improved range on his jumper (legitimate three point threat). He single-handily gave us some late game heroics leading us to victory by hitting three buzzer-beating, game-winning shots. He averaged over 16 ppg that year (Malik Sealy was the leading scorer) and won numerous awards. What might have been with that team if Jayson Williams doesn’t get hurt prior to the start of the season and again during the season (as he was really starting to get back to his old self in games) ending his college career. Even then, what could have been if not for the unwarranted technical foul given to Billy Singleton in the Round of 32 game against Duke which changed the momentum of the game. the season w during the season A well deserved honor.

Congratulations to all of the new inductees

Is there a comprehensive list of who in in the SJU Hall of Fame?

Rencher formed an impressive backcourt with Reggie Carter after they both transferred in together and in the '79-'80 season led the Redmen to the second round of the NCAA tournament. I liked him as a player but it is interesting that he is going into the SJU hall of fame but in the last media guide he is not listed among the Great Names in SJU History. Guess in the next media guide they will have a chance to correct that😁

Rencher was the floor leader of some of the best pre-BE SJU teams of Carter, McCoy, Gilroy, Plair, and Co. that came within a few points of the final four.

Boo was a out of place headache at first, a Ferrari when Lou wanted a station wagon who did so poorly in class he was ineligible in what was supposed to be his senior year. But he came back exponentially more mature a year later and had one of the best individual seasons in SJU history.

Since that document, about Men´s Basketball, JoeDepre and Mark Jackson were honored in 2021 and Jerry Houston and Jayson Williams in 2022.
Thanks Gongalo! When you look at who is on the list you also begin to think of all the great athletes who are not in - yet! With the passing of some of our great athletes prematurely young, Coach C. has continually implored the committee to induct athletes "while they are alive to enjoy the honor". Looie would induct 20 at a time if it were practical but even classes of 8 or 9 make for a long ceremony.

To adjust, we've eliminated introductory speeches by a designee of those being inducted.

Seating is limited and I would strongly urge any fan to attend. Last year Jayson Williams drew a contingent of former sju players, nba stars such as Charles Oakley, and NFL star Curtis Martin. The event itself is great as Panther could attest to - it seems EVERY former player and coach knows him.

Again the induction is saturday night of Homecoming Weekend, Oct 28th.

Rencher also contributed mightily to the athletic department for years as an excellent academic advisor.

He is the first and only plsyer I ever saw who could fake a behind the back pass on a drive to the hoop, freezing a defender in the lane before putting in an uncontested layup. Beautiful to watch.

With Reggie Carter, the two comprised the sju version of a Rolls-Royce backup. Sadly Reggie passed very young and won't be present, but would expect a slew of his former teammates and succeeding athletes he helped.

Coach feels that Boo was one of our very best guards ever, and who can disagree with Coach.

To be followed the next day with the Homecoming BBQ and the exhibition game.

When it comes to any HOF, my standards, generally speaking, are much higher than the average fan and I never ever let emotion or personal feelings cloud my judgement. Having said all of that, the SJU HOF has become a complete farce with a certain recent inductee. So, I'll refrain from commenting at all on this subject matter.

I am confused, you comment by saying you won't comment, lmao. Last year, you made your feelings known, some agreed and some didn't. This year is about the 2023 Inductees, no need to regurgitate stuff that has already been discussed.

Congratulations to Gus, Bernard, and Boo on their well deserved Induction.
