Chris Mullin: "I think Sedee's going to be a big addition, offensively and defensively." Won't block shots like Tariq Owens, but does other things on defense like guarding on perimeter

"Probably the biggest thing Mustapha brings is experience. He's a good leader." -- Chris Mullin #sjubb

Chris Mullin: "I think in all areas it's been a natural progression. In year 4, it's our most talented team. Probably the biggest thing is most experience. That's a good combination to have."

"We played pretty fast last year. Hopefully this year, we can play even faster." -- Chris Mullin

Chris Mullin on tempering expectations: "I don't really see it as pressure. We have our own expectations as a team, and all these guys came here to play on this stage. That's why they're here. You gotta go out and do it." #SJUBB

Chris Mullin: "I expect to win. That's how I approach life. Becoming a winner there's a process to it." #sjubb

I don't want him guarding on the perimeter. I want him under the glass grabbing misses.

Mullin looked like he was giving a deposition as a defendant in a multi-million dollar lawsuit.

I wonder if that wasn't a misquote or misstatement by Mullin? I didn't hear it that way and if I had I think I would have been apoplectic. In light of his comments yesterday I think he was saying that the improved perimeter defense means we would not have to rely upon Keita for shot blocking.

Mullins went out of his way yesterday to say that while Keita is not the shot blocker Tariq is, he has very good lateral movement and will be good defending side to side. Thinking he may have been talking about Sedee being able to guard the perimeter in a switching situation and of course when you have a big man like a Bagley-type who will go out and shoot the three from the top of the key.

I totally agree we want him under the boards in the normal course but having a big with lateral quickness is always a good thing.

Agreed he looked like a guy who clearly didn't want to be there.

That's what I heard in the Rothstein pod. So if that's the case I totally agree.

Chris Mullin on criticism of him as a coach and if he can translate talent into results: “We’ll find out. That’s why we’re here. From the roster we had, we miraculously had the record we had..” #sjubb

After Chris Mullin gave out his number the last two seasons, there is no No 20 out there this year #sjubb

Chris Mullin defended non conference schedule as similar to first three seasons and doesn’t care about criticisms. Believes they’ll be fine “as long as we win.” #sjubb

Greg Williams thinks Heron on the team can help someone like him.

“He’ll definitely be there for experience and mentoring me. Getting ready for those situations that he’s already been, and just listening to him.”

Mustapha Heron was attracted to St. John’s because, “We got a chance to be a really good team.” Notes they have a lot of leadership on the team. #sjubb

Two very good signs.
1. Mullin in the middle of the huddle
2. I found Mitch Richmond

Justin Simon has been working hard this offseason, especially on his jump shot with the coaches.

“I’ve been working on it every day. Stuff as small as facing up my hands, stuff like that.”

Music to my ears!

To be honest it's a bit tough to get excited over how much people have improved/are working out/etc because we hear that at every school every year. But the difference this year vs previous years is we FINALLY have a full roster and no question marks in terms of eligibility. Haven't been this excited in any of my years following the team (disclosure: I am only 28).

LOL. I hope he is just downplaying the schedule and not being genuine here, because if so that is very concerning. Hopefully he knows basic math/projections, or could simply look at it for five seconds and realize it is nowhere close to previous years. He is right that if we win (and win a lot), then it doesn't matter. The schedule won't keep us out of the Tournament, especially now that Heron is eligible and we should be a lock rather than a bubble team.

Sedee Keita probably gave the most honest answer of the day. When asked about team expectations, he mentioned getting back into the top-4 in the Big East and a tournament bid, as the most realistic goal. “People expect us to compete.” #SJUBB

I think you all are missing the point. When we played teams such as Georgetown who had bigs who could step outside and make 3's, our bigs including Tariq, were not able to guard them.I clearly remember us fouling a Georgetown player on a 3 in overtime that lead to our loss in DC.

What Chris appears to be saying is that with his footwork and quickness, Keita can guard bigs on the perimeter and still be able to crash the boards.
