Welcome to the Big East... assuming he stays long enough to be welcomed.

Great hire for SMU. Immediate publicity. No matter how long he stays, they look like they are going to bring a great staff with him. Im not a fan of Brown but bringing in Illinois State head coach Tim Jankovich as an assistant and coach in waiting, along with former Illinois assistant Jerrance Howard and former Kentucky assistant Rod Strickland. Both of these guys are great recruiters.

Thats what I had as a negative with Brown as I didnt think hed recruit, but with that staff I dont think he'd have much problems.

Larry Brown is as slick as they come ... but he's also as good as they come. In fact, he's as great teacher, tactician, among the elite in the coaching profession.

Will be very interesting to watch this unfold. And if it helps give a new BE team a badly needed boost, so be it.

I wonder what kids these days want to play for Larry Brown though. I don't think his name draws as much attention as it used to. Definitely a step up for SMU. But let's be honest they had a name brand coach in Doh, and that didn't work out either. SMU football is on the rise again so I also question what kind of resources they'll devote to basketball. After all this is Texas.

SMU certainly has a lot of cash courtesy of a huge endowment to put money into the program if they want to.

terrible job of coaching the Knicks.  Don't know what he has left.

That was an impossible situation, an absolute zoo, and Brown's brief turn there was an anomaly and not at all reflective of his coaching abilities.

He's a name for a school with little basketball history, I think he'll get enough attention to draw some
decent recruits there. He's running out of choices at his age, I think (barring any health issues), he'll make 2 years.

Is that enough to make an impact though. If I'm a coach recruiting against SMU I just show a kid the number of stickers Larry has on his luggage. I don't know how many kids will be flocking there. He hasn't coached a college kid since 1988. I want SMU to do good for the benefit of the new Big East. This hire has a better chance of blowing up than succeeding though IMO.

Yeah and Sutter Home is a name brand wine, but it still sucks as far as wine goes, though not as much as Doh does at coaching and relating to players and staff once they arrive on campus.

+1

Even if Larry was not the gypsy of coaching he would become the second oldest active coach, with no division 1 coach in the past 30 years having coached past age 75 (though that could change next year if Teverster Anderson coaches again - which if he doesn't would make Brown the oldest).
He has a long resume but he is clearly short on years. I can't see any kids or parents not seeing past that facade.

That being said, I can remember someone mentioning, towards the end of Norm's tenure, that they wouldn't mind Bobby Knight doing something similar for SJU (this was before Lavin came on board.) Who knows? Maybe a few kids flock to Larry but I think the bigger question will be who he has as coach in waiting. I think its a lot of money spent with little return personally. Good luck SMU. We need you to be strong to keep the conference strong.

Hey I didn't say he was my first choice if I'm SMU. I just think the school will get some attention in the college basketball world, where it otherwise wouldn't.

A better way to get attention would have been to offer Rick Barnes a contract double what the current highest paid coach makes per year, just to see if he bites. That should have been the school's very first move.

Is Larry Brown really going to have the patience with college kids?

Larry's primarily known as a great teacher of the game, and I'd venture that teaching college kids is a helluva lot easier than teaching spoiled, fat-cat NBA players. (When Larry left the Knicks, I remember Jamal Crawford saying he learned a great deal from him in a very short time span and that, as a result, his game improved considerably. Unfortunately, none of his Knick teammates seemed to have been as receptive to the knowledge Larry was imparting.)

Maybe but I think he lost his mind there. When he requested the trade for Stevie Francis and then benched him and didn't like his game. WTF?????

This is a NO BRAINER for SMU.

Having been down here for a long time I can tell you this is the most pub SMU basketball has received since the Mavericks played at Moody Coliseum.

I don't think this is a long term deal at all i think he is coming in to set the program in the right direction and he is working right now to hand pick his succesor.

As far as Doh was concerned he was mainly a "brand name" in the northeast. The guy has done NOTHING here as far as recruiting and putting together a winning program and I was surprised that he lasted as long as he had.

Personally think the guy was overrated and was glad to see the powers that be at SJU come to their senses and walk away from hiring Doh.

I'm just ecstatic that SMU will be in the Big East because now that means I may have a chance to see Johnnies play in person for the first time in a LONG time.
