SJUBB Alumni Game

@StJohnsBBall: Add to the #SJUBB Alumni Game Roster: Matt Brust, Daryll "Showtime" Hill, Phil Missere and Quincy Roberts. Who will sign next???

Wonder who would have come out of the practice alive if Brust went up against Missere.

Brust

Brust was more of a bruiser, a football player playing basketball. Missere was a lunch pail type of guy - worked his butt off every minute on the court, and when he checked in, the team seemed to play better. Admittedly he played on a depleted roster, but no walk on at SJU ever earned his stripes better than Missere.

Absolutely.

#SJUBB ALUMNI GAME UPDATE: #NYC Connection: Rob Thomas (@Robdaboywonder) and Ricky Torres added to the roster for Oct. 25.

Ricky Torres

I really didn't think anyone knew where he was.

Glad he's alive and hopefully well, but it's weird that we can't find 20 former players who finished their careers with the program.

what time is the alumni game on the 25th any chance Walter berry or Chris will play?

Keep in mind that this is NOT going to be a competitive game in any way, shape or form. Also, although a few guys look like they could step onto the court today, a lot of guys don't play very much, and the ones that did sign up are probably shooting around and trying to shake off some rust as we speak.

I used to play in a Sunday night game with some ex-SJU and other college players - Pete LaMantia was still a deadeye shooter at 50 een if his knees were shot, Hank Cluess still double play also. George Bruns was amazing well past 50. I do remember Richie Lyons (great guy btw) coming down a few times, and at first he bore no resemblance to a former college player. Still and all looking forward to this night, which should be a lot of fun.

George was great at St. Augustine HS & Manhattan. Loved his game. I was at SJU with Pete L. Nice memories!

Pete L. was an Eastern League All-Star, in an era where there were 9 teams in the NBA. With a 30 team league, he almost certainly had been an NBA player.

Unless I'm misinterpreting you, Beast, I have to say, "Huh?" When Pete LaMantia left St. John's in 1971, there were 21 -- not 9 -- teams in the NBA. Also, there weren't anywhere near the number of African-American players in the NBA as there are now (very, very few college teams had a more black than white players), not to mention the number of foreign players. So, all things being equal, I'm wouldn't be so sure about Pete being a "certainty" to be an NBA player.

Without checking I thought LaMantia graduated around 1965. It was before my time. By the 1970-71 NBA season, there were 17 teams. Thanks for checking me on this. It was something that guys were speculating talking with Pete on night, and he may have been a late cut from some NBA tryouts, not sure. Do you recall how good a shooter he was at SJU?

There were, as you just noted, 17 NBA teams at the time, not 21 as I had thought. (Obviously wine & math don't mix well.) As for Pete, I was in the Army during his junior & senior years (a charming little spot overseas in '71), so I have zero recollection of him as a shooter ... or even as player aside from what I read in the papers.

You still win, though. 21 is a lot closer than 9. I should have checked his graduation date- I just guessed that he was a lot older than he was, but man I don't recall many guys who could shoot like that - bottom of the net an amazing % of times.

Also, let's not forget that for the 1971-72 season (which would have been Pete's rookie year) there were also 11 teams in the old ABA, including the Nets, who had three ex-Redmen (Sonny Dove, Billy Paultz & Joe DePre) on the roster ... and, oh yes, a coach named Lou Carnesecca. If Louie couldn't find a spot on his roster for Pete, it's reasonable to think that he didn't have pro-level talent.

good point.

In the late 1970s there was a catholic HS faculty basket ball league . Christ the king HS had Peter Lamantia SJU, JR ( Raftery ) SFC , Hughie Kirwan ( Manhattan ) and a bunch of intramural players including myself . George Bruns played for McClancy and another SJU player ( ??) was on the team . John carey played for All Hollows . It was amazing to see the level of play of those Div i players . George Bruns was probably the best all around athlete I ever saw . Peter Lamantia ( Bishop Reilly grad ) is one of the nicest people you would ever meet
