SJU vs Pitt Game Thread

The most disappointing game of the year at MSG.
Perhaps the most pivotal game of the year against a ranked team, and one going to the ACC to boot, and the Garden is less than half full.  If the players felt deflated looking into the stands, they played even more deflated on the court.

The positive:   although we shot atrociously, used terrible decision making, played bad team ball and could not control Woodall, we were in this game for most of 30 minutes.

The negatives:  Lavin looked absolutely lost in this game.  Our offense looked the worst it has since early stinkers against NJIT and UNCA.  The substitutions were mind-boggling!  This was not the game to "test" Jamal. This was a game to test Christian Jones.  It took Lavin most of the game to realize Harrison was costing SJ the game before he sat him "briefly". By then it was too late. He was 1-10 at that point and once Lav reinserted him, he quickly went 1-12 and turned the ball over over twice.  To say D'Lo was off today would be kind.  Sure he shot .08 %.  Sure he shot two air balls. But today we saw a new low in his game.  His usual terrible shot selection was there and his poor defense was obvious as Woodall faked him out of his sneakers on a couple of occasions but this game he actually looked like he gave up on his team.
The Defense----looked like a bunch of tired and confused athletes out there.  We rarely pressed when we could have and we played an ineffective zone that Pitt figured out early.  We actually played more inspired defense LAST YEAR when we only played 6 freshmen!  Where have you gone Mike Dunlap?
The Bottom line----had Harrison even showed up for this game and Karr not forcing a few shots, this game was winnable.
The Good News----Jamal Branch is NOT out for the season which means there is hope in a what appears to be a hopeless situation.  Two wins in the final BE games and BE tourney and this teams dances-----in the NIT.
Further good news----None of our players are ready for the NBA so unless a couple are asked to leave or leave on their own, this entire team will be back.
My hope is we sign Jordan to compensate for the erratic Greene/Harrison combo and that Primo gets an additional year.

There's a reason we can't keep our own studs in NYC recruiting wise. We are a so-so team. They want to play for teams who know how to win for years now. We are still a has-been in college basketball and no young kids are going to dream of playing for SJ as long as we keep stinking up the place. Not many teams were this great at one time then had such a long stretch of futility. It's the Isles all over. Just cannot rekindle that old winning form.

Yea, there is a reason we can't keep keeps studs here in NYC. Everyone and their mother recruits the hell out of them - some with multiple champsionship banners, some with outright lies, some breaking NCAA rules, some with beuatiful campuses, and all with silver tongued recruiters. We NEVER got all of the best players in NYC, and never will. We've gotten a good share and the best of the rest often. Every single major and mid major program recruits here, BUT lavin reeled in some pretty good players immediately, one who is in the NBA at this moment.

I feel really bad for you. I seriously think you are bi polar, and don't have any coping mechnisms at all. That's not a cheap shot in any way. If your posts are reflective of how you react in things that really matter, you should seek some help.
in the words of dwight howard your no doctor so please enough of saying someone is bi polar.

It's actually kind of cute that he brings up psychological disorders to a graduate student about to graduate as a licensed Psychologist. Lol...in other news a firefighter told a lawyer about law.

Joe, with gloves off, you are an idiot, who is in graduatge school for psychology. I have two degrees in pharmacy, and know more about psychotropic drugs, pharmacology, and pathology than your graduate degree will ever educate you in. At best you will get a PhD and still have an extremnely limited medical background with no foundation in core sciences pursuant to an understanding of psychotropic agents.

Insofar as choosing psychology for a major, based on your idiotic age-basis, I hope you choose child psychology and work your way up, because you are ill equipped to deal with anyone emotionally older than yourself.

Really? I feel like I don't get treated unfairly on this board. And i don't know if ive ever mentioned this but I'm 15 years old so enough with that crap
look im sorry kid i know hope is wonderful when your young but there is no way on gods green earth we will win the last three.

Some of you on this board are honestly on sweet air when you post. It's as if you huff some before typing. Read this loud and clear: being disappointed, frustrated, and pissed off at your team's putrid performance does NOT mean rooting against them. It's the same thing parents do to their kids. They will yell, scream, sometimes even hit them (some still do that), but at the end of the day it's out of love because they have so much invested in them, not because they hate their kids. So I love SJ. I want this team to win a championship. But when they fail miserably I will not accept it just like you wouldn't accept your child failing in school when you know they are capable. Not because I hate them, because I love them. Our window for seriously competing is now down to 1 year and that is next year. Do you really feel confident with this group? I sure as hell don't. There's a reason we can't keep our own studs in NYC recruiting wise. We are a so-so team. They want to play for teams who know how to win for years now. We are still a has-been in college basketball and no young kids are going to dream of playing for SJ as long as we keep stinking up the place. I'm indifferent to what people around here feel about you. I'm just telling you to take a breath of air every now and then. I've been a fan of this team since 1984. I didn't even go to this school. If you don't think I hate the fact that we're a middling team, then I don't know what to tell you. I'm 36, a team I root for hasn't won a Championship since I was 9. I used to let this bother me a lot, but as you get older, life changes and some things don't bother you as much as they used to.
I dream of being a powerhouse again one day, but this is a thing out of my hands (and yours).

Guinness don't forget we're dealing with the instant gratification generation. Many(although not all) of these kids have no clue. A some point life will deal them a harsh dose of reality.

If we are the instant gratification generation, then you come from the "stolen pension" generation, the "eating and getting fat on your dime" generation, the "retire early" generation, the "jobs on trees" generation, and the "grumpy old guy next door telling kids to get off his lawn" generation.

Except for being bald(full head of hair at 54), having a pension (Ive owned my own business for the past 25 years) and planning early retirement (I've got a son starting college next year and a daughter who's a High School Freshman), you've got me pegged to a tee. Oh and I live in an apartment in the city, not a house in the suburbs, so no lawns around here. But I must admit, I'm pretty damn grumpy most of the time.

(Steps on your property looking in your general direction)

Fair enough, looking in my direction and/or stepping on my property gets me pretty grumpy. So does ignorance.

We played with Pitt and actually outplayed them for 30 minutes. Sucks that the wheels fell off. Lets win these last three and make a run in BET and go dancing!!

Jack I really need to ask you something.
We see how we play against the better B.E. teams, we not not very good vs. them. If the last 3 were against DePaul, USF and SHU then i`d agree and say yeah lets win the last 3 games, we will play @ PC (they are better especially the game being in their house, @ ND (that`s a loss, and Vs Marquette (that`s probably a loss as well).
To me they`ll lucky to get one of the last 3.

Listen I`m a die hard Redmen fan (yeah please call these guys Johnnies, because they`ll never the Redmen.), I`m still waiting for MSG to rock for SJU like in the 80s. Not just once every 5,6 years we are good but year in and year out.

So Jack here`s the question. Please I`d like to know this especially after todays game.
WTF really makes you think that we are going to win the last 3 games? I would seriously like to know this.
Yeahj hoping is all good but you can hope all you want but it`s not going to happen.

I think we can win these three because

a) I like how we matchup against Providence, plus a week to prepare for them, we can win that

b) I don't know why you said @ ND is a guaranteed loss, DePaul lost in OT against ND twice this year, one at ND, So why Am I crazy for thinking they can beat ND?

c) Weeks ago people on here were breaking down our schedule saying Marquette is one of hardest games of the year, so I've watched their last 3 or 4 games. How do I describe those games? UNIMPRESSED. Overrated, lazy D, and struggle on the road

Well trust me I hope you`re right, I love eating sweet crow. I`ll say 99.9% it doesn`t happen though.

Alright I'll hold you to it bud

And I know things are bad when I run into Diehard St Johns/redmen.com poster Matt C out on the street ( who posted here since he was like 12 ) and he was so disgusted he was thinking about quitting his job and going back to grad school at Syracuse just to root for them ( and he hates syracuse ). lol

Haha was great running into you too MJ.

Today was a brutal game. Dlo played like a bum. No clue where Bourgault was in the second half. Good to see Branch back on the court, even if it was just a cameo because it means he should be back at full strength hopefully soon. This team has no idea what it's doing on offense - none. We look like a team that's a year away. On to Providence.

Jack,
Thanks for your posts. There's a reason you don't get trated unfairly because of your age. Except for one poster here, no one cares about your age, just your ability to contribute and enjoy this board as a fan. I think that anyone who watches basketball, and SJU in particular can contri bute something positive here. I really don't care whether someone is older or younger. In fact, the guys older than me here can comment on how good Tony Jackson was, if Alan seiden was as talented as is written about him, what was Kevin Loughery like as a Redmen, etc, etc. I appreciate there insights - would be phenomenal to hear form a poster who knew Looie as a student or even an assistant here. I'd appreciate a current student who know D'Lo or played hs ball with Jakarr and can tell us what they are like off the court. All that matters is loving SJU basketball and coming here to contribute positively. There are enough negative blogs and websites, and actually if you keep it positive you'll make friends here. I have not always been positive, but I've made more friends here than in all my years as a season ticket holder. So, like many, I thank Paul for this site.

So why were you just blasting my entire generation if it doesn't matter? If it didn't matter you wouldn't have made that comment. Unless you have dissociative personality disorder (formerly multiple personality disorder)? Maybe it was an alter ego...I'll let it slide.

I wasn't blasting an entire generation. Just the general recurring theme of your posts. It's really annoying, and if you get an undue share of wrath here, it's not because you are younger, it's because you seriously annoy people. Keep in mind, even though I saw this, I still offered you my tickets a few weeks back when I couldn't use them, so I don't dislike you.

My impressions and thoughts on the game...

Pathetic atmosphere. At one point I wondered if they were/should pump artificial noise.

These kids went out last night/ are having girl problems. No other excuse for getting beat on the glass on free throws.

The 5th grade CYO kids... I s&it you not were better than us today. 3 of the kids in that game had WET jumpers. Nailing 3 after 3 while we couldn't hit anything.

What happened to Marco? We couldn't get him in the game when we needed points?

Branch was misused and it threw off the whole team.

read again...he said "most, not all"... anyway, do you ever wonder why almost everyone on here (except possibly the new douche miguel) can't stand you? perhaps it's you, not the other posters. look at yourself... you're a whiney medium shirt wearing idiot. I'm only like 6 or 7 years older then you, so don't label me as one of the grumpy old men....i just know a real toolbag when i see one... i wish Paul would add a block poster feature so i didn't have to see what you write... you are a cancer to this board and i wish you would've stuck to your word when you said you would never post here again.

Not a bad idea Moose. Don't know if you're joking or not but some of this chatter is unbecoming. It's OK to rip the fans, environment, a player's energy, even a player on a slump a bit, maybe second guess a coaching move. But reading some of this back and forth nonsense is getting old.

honestly I dont think that would do much because when people get home from games we are still going to want to talk about it somewhere so you will just get post game threads

Some people just need to chill out with the crazy abrasive writing styles and take a deep breath before they post

As a season ticket holder and die hard fan,
I agree we do not deserve an NCAA bid. I think the only way we get in is if we end up in the BE tournament final game.
