SJU Offseason Thread (portal and recruiting discussions)

Goodman has us with the number one transfer class the other dope has us with the 8th ranked class mainly because he counts players who are retained. SMH
Dauster big UConn guy, when Pitino got hired thought good story but we are no threat. A lot of UConn fans saw what we’ve become. They are jealous the whole Storrs South thinking they’re Syracuse (another annoying fan base) really doesn’t exist. 6 national titles but again playing in Palookville. Now when we get spoken about Dauster takes a dig.

So Chris Ledlum was a grad transfer that is different.

Also I believe they did change the rule. Old rule was if you SIGNED you were still in the Portal until you enrolled.

I believe that changed and now once you SIGN scholarship paperwork you officially EXIT the Portal.

And if that is the case, if he signs, and the Portal is closed not sure how he re-enters.

Same thing happened with Quinn Slazinski in Rick’s first offseason. Once Ledlum came, Quinn re entered and ended up at WV. Probably same situation with Darling if we get lucky with Boogie

Quin and ledlum weee Grads and that was a different set of rules. DKs Glen Taylor wasn’t though and he fits the same scenario if the rules weren’t adjusted.

Correct both Quinn and Ledlum were grad transfers and the Portal never closes for Grad Transfers.

As for Taylor I believe that is correct that even after you sign scholarship paperwork you are still in the Portal until you enroll. Which was really odd because by being in the Portal you are still allowed to communicate with other programs even while you are signed to another. That is the whole point of the Portal, you don't have to ask permission to talk to another school once you are in.

But I believe that rule changed which makes sense. Once you sign grant-in aid/scholarship paperwork you are out of the Portal. Which makes sense, why would a school want to sign a kid and weeks before he enrolls he still allowed to stay in the Portal and is free to communicate with other schools?

National Letter of Intent

The council also adopted changes to NCAA signing rules that transition the National Letter of Intent program protections into signing and recruiting rules, effective immediately. The change was made at the recommendation of the Conference Commissioners Association, which previously had administrative oversight of the NLI program.

Moving forward, written offers of athletics aid will replace the NLI, and the previous formula for determining signing dates will be applied to those written offers. Transfer prospects may be signed by a new school once their names are permissibly entered in the Transfer Portal. After a prospect signs a written offer of athletics aid, other schools that offer athletically related financial aid will be prohibited from recruiting communications with that prospect.

This sounds more like anti-tampering than not being allowed to enter the portal/decommit though, right?

Not really since the Portal is why you are allowed to communicate that is what made it weird, I mean SJU signs Aaron Scott well before he is set to enroll at SJU. They announce it right. But because he is not enrolled he is still in the Portal which means by definition he can be contacted without it being a violation or tampering. Even though he signed with SJU and they announced it.

But either way I can't find it but I am pretty sure I saw Jeff Borzello or Norlander mention it last year about the subtle change of signing and leaving the Portal

I dont think your right about any rule change being implemented regarding re-entering the portal after signing paperwork.

There's an entire section here dedicated to flipping people who have already signed officially with schools, and it says there's a lot less latitude once they're enrolled.

"Still, according to several sources, many programs are actively working to make pitches to players who have already committed to other schools to make them reconsider, often dangling significant raises from the deals they agreed to just a few weeks before.

“‘Committed’ is a loose term,” one staffer joked.

There’s far less latitude to move around once players officially enroll in classes at their new campuses this summer. At least one program SI spoke to had changed their summer report date from previous years in order to shrink the window of time that their portal commits could be tampered with. But until players enroll, they technically remain in the portal even if they’ve made commitments or even signed financial agreements with new schools. Expect talent-hungry schools to exploit as many loopholes as possible to create advantages."
