SJU Offseason Thread (portal and recruiting discussions)

The one thing I will say about Lee's recruitment is that I am pretty sure I know who the source of Norlander's tweet is. And he is not associated with SJU or with Lee. Meaning it is coming from Florida which doesn't mean it is wrong but the fact that the source wouldn't name Florida as the leader and likely destination tells me they don't believe they have him in the bag.

Having said that obviously Florida has a great young coach and just won a NC. But SJU will have a roster that will be elite next year with or without Lee. Top 10 in the country and I believe the pre-season BE favorites along with UCONN. SJU has a lot to sell for next year and that is before we even get to the coach.

Be interesting to see if he takes in-homes after the Florida visit or he just decides to announce right after.

“Everyone” is not accurate.
If we do not land Lee then barring a new development in the next week I think there will be a higher degree of uncertainty at the PG spot but I also think we will be just fine.

Fwiw, heard he will make his decision shortly.

I wonder how negotiations progress at this point. He has not committed to a team yet, so I assume Lee is still available. I lean toward Jackson, because I think he is hungrier to prove himself. Do we sign Jackson without asking Lee again, thus running the risk of scarring Lee off, or do we ask Lee and run the risk of scarring Jackson off? Do we, finally, just sign the promising frosh, Lewis, and throw caution to the wind (sorry about the cliche)?

Hopefully some news pops soon because I think a lot of people are scooting towards the edge of the cliff. If the mega haul brings in 3 of the 4 guys that visited the campus the last few days, then I think we can all be happy without Lee at the point. If the mega haul ends up being a mega bust, well then, it will be time to panic.

I will be more than happy if we bring in the other three guys and a steady PG from the portal that may not be flashy, but just gets the job done.

But the portal doesn't close for another 2 weeks, there will be a ton more kids who go into / get pulled into the portal.
It closes one week from today and again, how many PGs that haven't yet declared actually might that can play starting minutes at this level?

We'll see how it shakes out. I'm not panicking yet but I'm definitely concerned. If it was any other position we could survive it being our weakest link, like we did with Sim at the 2 this past season. But not PG.

Glad we still have a shot at Lee, but I'm not holding my breath. Possible he's using us as a negotiation tactic at this point, and to be honest I couldn't blame him if he chooses Florida. Plenty of advantages to choosing the Johnnies, but UF has their advantages too.

I haven't commented previously on Lee, but I badly want him for a number of reasons. Part of that is my wife is Asian (along with a very high percent of Queens) and daughter is half, so it'd be awesome to have an elite Asian player on the team representing our school and NYC. Also the PG position IMO is the most important for becoming a legit Title contender, which is the goal for this season. I don't doubt Pitino will find an experienced and solid PG regardless, and others know far more about potential alternatives than I do, but I'm not super confident we'll get someone who will put us over the edge.

Still will be stoked for this upcoming season no matter what happens, but just my thoughts.

The narrative that X is using anybody hostage or as leverage is insulting. If that were the case we would not have turned down at least 2 schools that would have outbid everyone and at the very least driven up his price. He is the best pg in the portal and will be compensated commiserate with that but I’ve said all along its not all about the money and it’s not.
SJ visit was terrific and he’s very aware of all it has to offer. We will now hear/see Fla and a decision will be made shortly

No pressure on Lee lol but he could put this team over the top. I mean the VERY top. For a little perspective this staff and specifically Matt have done an AWESOME job.

Hopkins and Sanon didn’t just fall out of the sky. That took tons of effort to solidify through the year. We have a top 5, 5 star player from last year in Captain Jack potentially in the fold. Sellers and Mitchell inching to the finish line. And to top it all off, we have a Hall of Fame coach who makes it look EASY when integrating all these players.

So if X wants in, which we all hope is the case, we are fully locked and loaded. If not, there’s a bit more work to do, but I’m not sure this is something the staff shy away from regardless!

Exactly. Ask "the best coach in the effing sport" how it went this year with a solid team but subpar PG play.
