SJU Loses Keegan's Support

I hope the new president read's this. Not a good publicity piece for the orange guy.

This is terrible news. I used to look forward to him wearing his Red and White on Sundays. I also think it is pretty poor PR for the school. I hope they fire Mr. ORANGE, and hire a sport administrator who can be a visionary, and get our entire program into the 21st century. This bird does nothing for the university.

We need a real AD. We've been needing one for a long time now. I don't understand how the current guy seems to be Teflon.

He still wore his red and white yesterday. Perhaps if Monasch leaves, our logo will return to the side of Keegan's golf bag.

As much as I like Keegan, I don't understand his beef with the school. He went to school to play golf, but if facilities and all that were so important to him, why on earth would he choose a school in NYC??? He wanted better practice facilities? What did he want the school to do, build a freakin golf course on campus?

If he wanted the best of the best when it came to his sport, he should have went somewhere down south, where the weather and land availability is much more accommodating.

This would be like me going to the university of Texas, and then being upset that their bobsled facilities are not up to par (no pun intended).

He wears Red and White for The Red Sox.

He has a Red Sox logo on his bag.

To be fair, St. John's did hire a former St. John's golfer to replace Darbs (just not the one who KB wanted).

Our new coach is very, very qualified.

KB had said (or at least hinted) that he was going to help underwrite a new indoor golf facility for the team. I guess that is a non-starter.

I like Darbs a lot, always very nice to me.

That said, I cannot tell you with 100% certainty why the decision was made to part company but I will give SJU the benefit of the doubt that this wasn't done without some serious thought at the highest levels. That is just an assumption on my part.

I would hope that this wasn't done lightly to someone who has been at St. John's for 20 years.

If it was his first offense, I would wonder what it was.

I will assume it was a serious infraction although I haven't a clue.

If it wasn't his first (serious) offense, that is something else.

Was he warned about something previously ?

All of the aforementioned is pure and idle speculation.

From what I understand, St. John's was his only offer. Perhaps I'm wrong.

I believe Richmond (perhaps another Southern school) had interest in him as a school boy but lost interest for whatever reason his senior year.

Take it FWIW.

Let's not forget that he went to high school in Vermont and wasn't the golfer then (even at SJU) that he has blossomed into.

Jumbo, I agree with everything you said, but it was great seeing a guy who does so well on the tour
being proud enough to have our logo on his bag and he always talked up his experience at
St. John's.

Or perhaps Monasch had cause in firing Darby.

It does happen from time to time.

Yes but a man in his position loses credibility and the benefit of the doubt when too much questionable " stuff" surfaces and the ability to promote goodwill from that same man is lacking.

I wrote about this few weeks ago. Coach Darby was let go on a ridiculous claim by one of his players. I won't get into it since it's not my place but please trust me when I say that it was VERY ridiculous and not something someone should be fired for. It was more less a coup to have him gone. Monarch is part of it and it's shameful. The process of hiring new coach was even worse. Keegan and Svoboda donate not only money but time to the university and Monarch did not inquire with them regarding the hire after knowing that both of our pros wanted to have a say and voice their opinion. Keegan is more upset over Darby's firing (since he knows how ridiculous it was) than the choice of the coach.
He will not participate or involve himself with the University until Our current AD is a staff member. I don't blame him one bit.

SS&G, it's interesting that you don't apply this totality of the circumstances type of logic to coach Lavin.

Also, I don't know much about why the prior coach was fired but Mal Galetta is a good guy, and I think will make for an excellent coach.

How does a Big East coach of the year get fired? Maybe he had a one year contract and we are talking about a renewal. If that's the case, money is a good bet given Bobby's cost cutting measure and a BE coach of the year wanting a decent raise.

But that's all speculation. IT could be any reason, justified or not.
