SJU Facilities Update

Not happening for a multitude of reasons. Don't waste your breath or your typing skills on waiting for a new
Arena. I detailed many of the legal issues a larger arena would bring a few years ago when this was discussed. Just not happening.

I don't doubt that you know more on this situation than I do. But, CA is 55 years old. At some point, SJU will have to do something.

Regardless of your said post redman, and I'm sure it was a good one, I cant believe that CA will live on in its current state forever. That is not the nature of today's athletic beast. Whether that is a rebuild, a new building, or a renovation I have no clue.
Maybe we need a beam to fall from the ceiling like happened at Yankee Stadium to prompt something to be done. Anyone willing to climb up and loosen a few screws? :)

Think there have been more than a few loose screws around SJU in PAST years. Hopefully all are torqued correctly now. :)

A new arena facility (and it's magnitude) would likely play out with relation to the success of the team in the next 5 - 7 years.

Echo Redmannorth. The school is in no way interested in building a new on campus arena. There is some talk of expanding CA's seating capacity, which may make sense given the increased attendance at home. Even with that, students do not attend games, save for a couple hundred male students that aren't representative of the student body as a whole, Bottom line is that our alumni don't contribute at anywhere near the level we'd have to in order to finance a new on campus arena.

Curious how they would increase capacity without a pretty significant restructure

My thoughts are optimistic and premature, but a lot of the issues stated above (all true for the past 25+ years), could be problems of the past by stringing together 5+ winning seasons and a new culture of success. A winning record in 2016/17, and top 25/NCAA tourney 2018, 19, 20, and this conversation is very different.

There was a plan many years ago to build additional seating over what was the Little Theatre. I think the plan being contemplated now is build build one one or both sides behind the baskets.

Well I do know this. Villanova wants to replace the Pavillion with a new on campus arena. The Pavillion was once called the DuPont Pavillion, and its benefactor was no other than the wrestling nut DuPont portrayed by Steve Carell in the movie. The total amount Villanova is trying to raise is $600 million for multiple projects around campus. Before the NCAA run, they were at $515 million, and the drive began 2 years ago at this time. This is on the heels of a successful $300 or 400 million campaign about 9 years ago.

I know you didn't say this, but may have inferred this. If our program wins for the next 4-5 years, basketball revenue alone will not build a new arena. A huge capital expenditure such as this would have to be financed almost entirely by alumni contributions. It's surprising as Gempeshaw enters his 3rd year of his Presidency, the university has neither a strategic plan nor has he initiated a large fund raising campaign. That's what would be needed to build a new arena, if building a new arena would even be high on the list of priorities.

Agree with everything Beast wrote and even if we had a capital campaign that raised $200 million for a new on campus arena all I am trying to say , and for the last time , there are tremendous legal hurdles that would have to be overcome which may make it impossible to construct a larger on campus arena.

completely understood. We are in a unique situation where we already have a high profile home court that seats 20,000 on 34th Street. So with MSG playing that role, our long-term needs on campus are different that other schools. The same space at CA could be used more efficiently... adding comfort, additional seats, and a more current/modern game experience. Not talking new paint or some padding on the seats, I'm thinking complete overhaul of the existing space. It feels too early to make a push for fundraising for an initiative like this, but maybe with another year under our belt, and some success on the court and on the recruiting front, it will make more sense, with the idea that something like this could happen 5 or 6 years from now. CA could be for sports like the Beacon Theater is for concerts, and when the Stones come to town, we play the Garden.

What I wrote is this:

The important thing not to misunderstand is that while this is a stupendous contribution, it doesn't mean that alumni should sit back and wait for some wealthy alumnus to kick in a huge number. JSJ could tell you just how many living alumni we have. Imagine what the university could do if 10%, or 20 or 30%, or God forbid 40% of out alumni contributed within their means to our school. God knows, we just might inch closer athletically and academically to some of the schools that have passed us. Think about it, and if you'd like that kind of school and athletic program, write a check.

Lets get a winning team first that fills the present court consistently. Then when students can not get seats expand. Then expense can be warranted
