Not happening for a multitude of reasons. Don't waste your breath or your typing skills on waiting for a new
Arena. I detailed many of the legal issues a larger arena would bring a few years ago when this was discussed. Just not happening.
I don't doubt that you know more on this situation than I do. But, CA is 55 years old. At some point, SJU will have to do something.
A new arena facility (and it's magnitude) would likely play out with relation to the success of the team in the next 5 - 7 years.
Echo Redmannorth. The school is in no way interested in building a new on campus arena. There is some talk of expanding CA's seating capacity, which may make sense given the increased attendance at home. Even with that, students do not attend games, save for a couple hundred male students that aren't representative of the student body as a whole, Bottom line is that our alumni don't contribute at anywhere near the level we'd have to in order to finance a new on campus arena.
My thoughts are optimistic and premature, but a lot of the issues stated above (all true for the past 25+ years), could be problems of the past by stringing together 5+ winning seasons and a new culture of success. A winning record in 2016/17, and top 25/NCAA tourney 2018, 19, 20, and this conversation is very different.
Well I do know this. Villanova wants to replace the Pavillion with a new on campus arena. The Pavillion was once called the DuPont Pavillion, and its benefactor was no other than the wrestling nut DuPont portrayed by Steve Carell in the movie. The total amount Villanova is trying to raise is $600 million for multiple projects around campus. Before the NCAA run, they were at $515 million, and the drive began 2 years ago at this time. This is on the heels of a successful $300 or 400 million campaign about 9 years ago.
I know you didn't say this, but may have inferred this. If our program wins for the next 4-5 years, basketball revenue alone will not build a new arena. A huge capital expenditure such as this would have to be financed almost entirely by alumni contributions. It's surprising as Gempeshaw enters his 3rd year of his Presidency, the university has neither a strategic plan nor has he initiated a large fund raising campaign. That's what would be needed to build a new arena, if building a new arena would even be high on the list of priorities.
