wow. I was a commuter from Nassau county so i never lived on campus, but this seems a bit excessive. The dorms were nice but i don't see any reason why in queens they should be the 3rd most expensive dorms.

Do the dorms work like the tuition where almost nobody pays the full amount? Scholarships available for just about everything? Maybe that's why the sticker price is so high.

Wow, times sure have changed. I graduated SJU Pharmacy school in 1971. I paid $600 tuition per semester and rented a room in an elderly woman's house on Kildare Rd. across from campus for $50 per month.
But, then again my first job as a hospital pharmacist, I was paid $280 per week.

I graduated in 1972
My first teaching job earned me the handsome sum of $7,500 per year
I should have been a pharmacist!!

Thanks! I was under the hazy impression that tuition my first semester at SJU was $900 per semester which I thought was really inexpensive, but still a 50% jump over what you paid (started in 74). By the time I graduated, pharmacist made about $25,000 per year. I guess inflation began to soar in the Carter years.

Thanks guys, when I went to Pharmacy School, my tuition was $489/semester and I had a gorgeous room I rented on 184th St. for $35.00/mos. Oh my, how things have changed.

I am a youngster compared to you old fogey's. :cheer: :cheer:

Class of 1990, started out renting a room for $50 a week way down in Jamaica @ 108th Ave & Merrick. I did not own a car so I walked the 2 miles to SJU every day (during the crack epidemic no less). Each semester, I slowly made my way north via Hollis, Flushing and Fresh Meadows. Never paid more than $75 per week in rent. By Grad School I was in Bayside! Are the Q17 and Q31 buses still running? Good times!

These youngsters are spoiled, I tell ya!

Amazing. $489 at a private university. One of the things I've spoken to with people in development is that our fund raising activities should focus on the incredibly low tuition that many of us paid, which was the catalyst for us enjoying successful careers. When I think along those lines, I'm much more inclined to donate to the university to repay a debt so to speak for the university offering a low cost Catholic education to me.

This is disheartening. How about tightening admission standards a tad, especially the academic requirements. . .

I graduated in '05 and lived in the dorms my first three years, so I can shed a bit more light on this. At that time, room and board was roughly $10,000. Unlike tuition, room and board could not be paid for with grants. During my freshman year, I shared a suite with five other guys that was built for four. This was very common for freshmen in the dorms, and I suspect the school is still packing the freshmen like sardines, despite the increase in price. Upper-classmen are not subjected to this, however. The food in the dining hall was just mediocre. In all, $10,000 seemed very steep ten years ago, and to see it rise 65% is insane.

By comparison, average SUNY school room and board is 12K per school year

Interesting. I graduated from UConn the same year in '05 and was paying around 5K for room and board per year.

I commuted from Nassau County. I graduated in 1974 from SJC. I paid $750/semester my first two years. I paid $850/semester my junior year and $950/semester my senior year. My first job after graduating paid me $160/week at JFK airport working at a customhouse broker clearing air freight.

My son is jammed into a forced triple in a room designed for 2 at his school. I shudder to check what room and board is there but it's through the roof. They do issue a small rebate for those in forced triples, though. Ok I checked. Best I can tell, about $13,000 and also campus is located in a pretty pricey city. This $13,000 does not include a $3000 rebate for a forced triple, so all in all not as bad as I thought. Now, tuition and fees, on the other hand, is almost $50,000

My father taught at the School of Pharmacy from the day I was born until the day he died and was Chair of Pharmaceutical Sciences for the last 10 years of his life. When I was a kid I earned my allowance by grading his papers and exams. That means that when I was in high school I was the one giving you C's in college. Lulz.

Could you please private me your Dad's name if you don't wish to share it publicly. Chances are he was on staff when I was staff there. Was your Dad Henry Eisen? Charles Jawrowski?

I was wondering the same thing; I would have guessed Hank Eisen since the sense of humor is similar.

I will never forget Professor Luongo. The one quote that stands out was "Fellows (there was only one female student in our class) I have no problem with 5 or 6 of you going out on weekends after studying and share a 6 pack of beer"

Now if it was Eisen, who was the most ascerbic guy on staff at SJU, a direct opposite of the effervescent student pleaser Ctstorm, Eisen DID properly prepare thousands of SJU pharmacy grads for the calculations part of the board. My guess is Eisen :)

He was on staff from the 50s. Chair of Allied Sciences from like 60 to 70 and then Pharmaceutical Sciences after that until he died around 1985.

I remember Eisen but not the other guy. There was Elvira Richardson and Joe Balkon and Jamie (?) Bidanset and some Indian guy who I remember because he drank like a fish and Anthony (?) Bellafiore, who had a lifesize statute of Saint Jude in his lecture room that he chopped up with an axe because he said it had been defiled. Which it had been: some grad students (Krebs? Greenburg? Torre?) put it in my fathers office dressed up in a lab coat and goggles with a joint and a bottle of wine in its hands. After he chopped it up they rescued the hands and stuff from the dumpster and hung them in my fathers office like a mobile. I probably still have the pictures around somewhere.

I had Bellafiore and Eisen. You are thinking of Parshotam Madan. you are also confusing Bellafiore (who carried his class notes in a 50 year old shoebox tied with a string) with Dr. Lynch, who was rumored to have done that because some pharmacy student put lab goggles on a saintly statue. I had Krebs as a lab instructor, also Dr. Mike Torre and his younger brother. Also had Ceasar Lau Cam, Buatti, Dr. Ralph Stephani, Sr. Jane, and a bunch more.
