Site was down?

I am not one to tell people what to do with their money but the panic among this would have caused if it was down for a prolonged period is well, something most of us don’t want to think about. The effort and cost to keep this site up and running has to be rather significant so, if I may suggest, please contribute to the site to help defer the costs.

Also, please remember to keep our Webmaster and friend, Paul along with his family in your prayers.
Paul has enough going on in his life to deal with cost factors affecting the site.
There are a few very generous alums who can cover the upkeep of the site.
Ron Linfont was with one of them the other day. My advice for the long term is seek a sponsor and spare Paul and his family from the cost element of running the site.

Of course, donations will always be welcomed for budget reserves but I personally know what Paul is going through from family experience and the last thing he needs is to worry about the site.

Four things:
-Thank you Ron for your generous donation to this wonderful site
-Do we know for a fact that the shut down was money related?
-Is this site not being run like a business? Or is it a charity? I assumed with all the ads that it's a business
-I'm donating even if it's a business, but not telling anyone else what they should do

If anyone took my post as saying that the shutdown was money related, I apologize because that was not my intent nor do I know why it was shutdown. Again, far be it for me to tell anyone what to do with their money, it was more of a suggestion to possibly help ease things that Paul and family are going through and to continue to keep them in your prayers or thoughts.

This site costs money to run and maintain.

Paul’s son stepped in to get the site back up and running. As a young guy I do not know whether he has the time, passion, or money to maintain its operation as his father.

I sense that the posters and readers of this site who have never contributed and refuse to assist in its costs of operation may someday regret that they did not assist Paul’s family to keep it going.

I was terrified when the site went down because I thought it was hacked and when I saw a screen that said the domain is up for sale. I texted Mike and he said there was a backup which was a relief. I went to the catholic league playoffs so I guess it came back pretty quickly. I just made another donation.

Domain registrations cost several hundreds of dollars annually and registration periods are finite registrations. Once a license expires, anyone can grab that domain name and control that URL.

There are predators who pay attention to this, swoop in to license an expired domain, and hold that domain hostage. They don't control site content at all, just the address.

What they typically do is wait for the former domain registrant to contact them, then name a price to sell it back at a hefty profit.

Domain registration is only a small part of what it takes to maintain this site and not the only risk. Hackers continually try to penetrate website servers, gain control, and lock them up until ransoms are paid. Corporations have quietly paid 7 and 8 figure ransoms rather than have users panic over their personal data being publicly exposed as breached.

Then of course is the real work of maintaining the site, debugging, organizing and installing new features and content.

As we saw yesterday, red.fans access can be abruptly terminated, either briefly or permanently.

Otis and other mods - thank you for your quick intervention and thanks to Paul's family for rapidly responding.

Without doxxing anyone, Paul's family is awesome and possess incredible character and faith.

They have way too much on their minds at present than to worry about this site.

Please consider supporting or increasing your annual donation. Even a one day disruption of service resulted in a panic throughout our community.

I'll keep it going if help is needed.

I have a computer science degree, work a very high level tech job at a very high level company in Seattle. Have worked on full stack development for 15 years.

If this site ever needs help please please please DM me.
I volunteer to help as well, based on my own past experience as a cofounder of a website with >1 million unique visitors per month and hundreds of concurrent users on a regular basis. But I'm a content person, not a programmer, and so I'm certain you could do things much better and cheaper than me!

Based on my personal experience, costs for a fully managed server for a website like this should run no more than $200 per month (and that's probably on the high end), add another $500 or so annually for various software licensing, domain registration, etc. So that's max $3,000 annually for a site like this. Again, you could probably do it better and cheaper!

Funny that this morning I was going through my Facebook memories and it was 13 years ago today that Redmen.com was hacked.

One day, when my daughter was a senior in high school, she came home from school all angry about something. I asked her what was wrong and she said "I didn't get chosen to be a team leader at next weekend's Kairos retreat!!". When I asked her why not, she replied "because the teacher says that I question the existence of God!" I said "well, you do question the existence of God". She then replied "I know, but she doesn't know that!" LOL

Faith implies doubt. It wouldn't be faith if there wasn't doubt. Mother Theresa privately expressed doubt and it was revealed after her death. Kairos very big at Jesuit schools. Xavier just announced Kairos reboots for all grads 1990-2023.
