NAH it is always fun!
CENTER-Obekpa vs Clark
Despite his % so far Clark is a good shooter. He has unfortunately become very one dimensional. Sadly that dimension does not include rebounding, defending or layup making.
Obekpa was a game changing shot blocker and decent rebounder but terrible offensively. I do think that if you put CO on this team you could pencil US (screw u Fordham) into sweet 16. Couple CO negatives make this matchup closer. His idiotic grin that would appear at seemingly inappropriate times and his affinity for wearing John Stockton's 1987 brand shorts. Finally the fact that he got suspended for smoking weed before an NCAA game. Look who among us didn't partake while in college? However seeing how ST John's makes the NCAA tourney once a decade or so maybe a little abstention for a week? Or a nice pot of Golden Seal Tea directly afterwards at the very least? Stupid!!
EDGE-EVEN
POWER FORWARD- Sir Dom vs LJ
Sound like a 1985 WWF match. While neither is / was a true 4 this is the best matchup. Possibly the best all around player on both teams. LJ so far looks like he will be a very good player hopefully for the next 3 years and is possibly the 2nd best player on the team.
Edge however goes to Dom. Pointer was able to channel David Cain's magic and pull a great senior year out of his arse. In fact the rumor was Dom was going to be redshirted .I will go as far to say that Dom had the most non scoring related best year in ST John's basketball history during the WASJU time as a fan.
EDGE 2015
SMALL FORWARD-Heron I guess(Position-less basketball) vs Harrison(Time honored ST John's tradition of roster imbalance)
Only 8 games and Heron is obviously a very good basketball player but I get the sense that he is still trying to fit in and not totally comfortable yet. His closing out on shooters ability fits in nicely unfortunately. I do think heron's best basketball is ahead of him.
Harrison was a really good 4 year player who for 2 of those years was burdened with being virtually the entire offense. Was probably the most unfairly criticized best player on these boards since I have been coming on these boards. I say probably because Ponds has shot to catch him. Yes I truly believe the tats and frohawk were just never going to endear him to some on here.
EDGE 2015
SHOOTING GUARD- Simon vs Greene
Ok full disclosure. I am a big Justin Simon fan. Despite having a truly ugly looking set shot kind of thingy his shooting % the last 2 years has been good. For a guy who gets unduly criticized on her for being reckless with the ball he his very good at playing within himself and picking his spots to shoot. BTW both Heron and Clark average more TO's per game. Simon is our 2nd best ball handler and passer and one of our best rebounders. Only negative is like all of his teammates he simply can't be bothered to play perimeter D.
Greene- Once they mercifully took him off the point, Greene became a solid non circular dribbling player for us.
EDGE-2018
POINT GUARD-Ponds vs Jordan
I liked Jordan. Thought he was fun to watch and was very talented. Plus have to give him credit for being able to commute from Philly to Queens whenever we had a game. Was basically a ringer as he did not go to class or practice if rumors are to be believed.
Ponds is not perfect. He is not a pure or good percentage shooter. He is also the 2nd worst defender on the team. Sometimes over dribbles. Now this taking games off to show NBA teams he is unselfish and a willing passer thing.
But he is also the single most offensively talented guard I have seen since I have been a fan. Not point guard or shooting guard just guard. And I AM NOT SAYING BEST BASKETBALL PLAYER. Just most offensively talented. Ponds simply can not be defended going to the hoop and his drives are our highest % shot. Needs to make tourney for me to rank him over Hatton but I am betting that is just a formality.
EDGE 2018
BENCH
Branch & Alibegovic vs Dixon & Trimble
YUCK! If keita comes back and can do anything it would tip it to 2018.
But for now Branch was better than Dixon is now so...
EDGE 2015
COACH- Mullin vs Lavin
Lavin made two NCAA tourney's in 5 years. But only 1 in first 4 years. So Mullin should tie him for that this year.
Lavin only won ONE BET game and that was partially due to a terrible non call. Mullin already has 2 wins.
Lavin has been fired as Head coach twice. Mullin has never been fired as a coach.
Chris Mullin used to sit on tables which bothered MJ Maher greatly. Lavin used to give out really dumb nicknames that bothered most of us.
Chris Mullin was the best player ST John's has ever had and I was alive to see ST John's ranked number ONE in the whole freaking country.
EDGE-Cmon who did you think I would give this to
HUUUUUUGE EDGE 2018
Maybe it the nostalgia talking but I don’t know if our current team would beat that 2015 team. Don’t forget that the senior year version of Dom Pointer was truly insane. That man was on a mission. DLo wasn’t healthy the whole season but when he was he was fantastic.
I think we'd beat the brakes off them. Simon could very well be the same kind of inside player Pointer was that season.
