SI - Big East Nostalgia In the Air

The hell with nostalgia. After next season's game at Syracuse, I would not-so-kindly tell Syracuse to go jump in the Fingers Lake and stop playing them.

Mr Dolan has no say in our schedule. We pay the same rent regardless of if we play Cuse or Fordham. Might he make some money on concessions, sure. But the rent is the same and this game does zero for the team, the school or its fans.

There are plenty of viable schools we can play in place of Syracuse.

They decided to leave the conference, so screw 'em! We should only play them when we do not have any choice (ie, preseason or postseason tournaments). Otherwise, schedule games with other perennial top 25 teams.

We should schedule UConn, that would really stick it to them lol. I agree however that we should not schedule Syracuse anymore, and it has nothing to do with their fans or us losing to them. For me it's simply b/c of them leaving the conference. Truth be told I'd rather not schedule any ACC opponent. Let's play Kentucky, Michigan St., Kansas, UCLA, Arizona, Ohio St., Florida, Michigan, Gonzaga, Maryland (they are leaving the ACC), and even UConn. There are plenty of national powers that would be a marquee game at the Garden.

Really?
I was pretty pumped for yesterday's game. I think a majority of the fan base was. So was Isaiah Briscoe.
And STJ made a killing at the gate.

I agree. No other game on the schedule is as big a draw or creates as much buzz with fans and recruits as playing Syracuse at msg (or even at the dome).
Playing Duke or Kentucky is fine (and we should be doing that in addition) but even those games aren't generating the type of buzz that Cuse does.

If we want to beat Cuse out for common recruits, the quickest way to do that is by actually beating them on the court in front of those recruits.
The Cuse game should be supplemented with one or two other quality out of conference rivals, but it shouldn't be replaced.

Its embarrassing going to a home game and being treated like the red headed step child. If our fans don't want to step up to the plate and go to games its unfair to the kids having to play a 'road' game in their own building. I'd love to know what was going thru Briscoe's mind see more Cuse fans there

Moose I agree up to the Briscoe comment. The fact he was invited by the staff for this game means Lavin is confident the way his recruitment is going. Also, Lavin could sell Briscoe on coming here and making SJU the bigger attraction at the Garden for a game like this.

correct, Even though their administration is dollar crazy they do put it back into the program. St. John's has a rich long rivalry with Cuse and should continue it.
I know Lavin favors it and will eventually beat them.

I believe you are referencing the 2000 game where ND coming off a 5-7 season the year before was taking on #1 ranked Nebraska. Bob Davie was wrecking havoc on the ND program and fans probably sold tickets to make a buck. Our fans barely even buy tickets let alone flip them.

Many do not buy tickets because the price/value ratio has buyers making other choices when it come to spending $40 or $50 per seat to watch a college game for an avergae product. Loyal fans will always show up even 40 years after graduation. The casual fans need a good social reason to be there. There has not been anything to excite those fans to take a date to a game. Students, on the other hand, pay a drastically reduced price and SJu should follow the practices of some other schools in marketing the games to them.

I don't know about your section, but I was completely surrounded by Orange fans in my section. Def felt like a road game to me, and of course the Orange shirts for sale inside Msg made me puke.

I had some. Previous years I felt my section was worse.
SJU has to step up and make better demands with regards to other teams merch.

We have nothing to gain by playing up there, so I would tell them it's MSG every year or go f yourselves. But even that we gain nothing unless we start winning.

It would be nice if the Garden had pro-STJ owners who would ban Syracuse from playing there unless it's against us. And no sales of Syracuse gear either.
