JAMAICA ESTATE, Queens (WABC) -- St. John's University in Queens sent out an alert to students Wednesday after a shot was fired during a robbery attempt inside a dormitory.

The incident happened Wednesday afternoon at Hollis Hall on the Jamaica Estates campus.

The school said on social media that the incident involved three men with a gun, and that the men have been apprehended by the NYPD.

This is the alert the school sent out to the campus:
St. John's University Public Safety. St. John's University resident students report 3 males entered their Hollis Hall residence and displayed a gun, discharged a bullet and attempted to remove money. The police have apprehended the males involved off campus and are currently investigating. There is no continuing threat to our community at this time.

A student at the university submitted the photo above to Eyewitness News, showing a large police presence outside Hollis Hall.

St. John's University said there is no longer a threat to the campus and that all is clear.

No offense to something that is serious but if I was going to rob someone students would be at the bottom of my list for projected revenue to collect. Glad no one was hurt

Assume these guys are not waiting for Mensa acceptance.

A student posted the below on Twitter which is funny, but true:

"Welcome to St. Johns Where Shots Are Made In The Residence Halls But Not On the Basketball Courts

See here is an example of where not having Livingston hurts. He definitely would have known how to take care of business

A little unsettling. Hollis is actually the residence hall I'm staying in next year

Security in Hollis is top notch compared to literally every other school's dorm I've ever been to. You have to give your card to a security person and get swiped in every time you come in, non student guests have to leave their photo ID at the desk. Suprised something like this happened inside the dorm, but trust me it's much harder to sneak into an SJU dorm than any other area school's dorms. I wouldn't be worried.

Unless you are that student at Stony Brook who left a wad of cash in his car which tow basketball players allegedly broke into and stole.

Which is why there is more to the story. Somebody let them in and it's possible the victim wasn't a random choice but set-up for a reason. Not blaming the victim but maybe someone told them he might have some cash on him.

There is no way to spin this other than there was a serious breach of security. Whoever was on duty is out of a job.

There's a NY Post article stating it was a drug related robbery by 3 kids so them getting into the building isn't a breach of security. Anybody is allowed into the dorms as long as they have ID and a student to sign them in.

I was just going to speculate that it was drug related. I also believe without fact that the hofstra off campus robbery/hostage/accidental shooting death of a student was drug related.

Jack , before you panic , at Villanova this year two dtudents were arrested (including one from queens ) for dealing karge quantities of drugs. Still very disturbing

Unfortunately heroin is rearing its ugly head on Long Island.

Cops can't stop and search them why would a security guard do anything other then ask for id. That's what the city wants

If they're known drug dealers cops can certainly stop them. It's called reasonable suspicion.
And a cop is then permitted to search the outter garments for weapons, aka a Terry stop.

On the other hand, you're right, the city doesn't want people being stopped just because they are brown.
Too many people have no idea what stop and frisk actually entails and what is not allowed.

Unfortunately heroin is rearing its ugly head on Long Island.

Kids who have barely tried drugs quickly move from prescription opiates at a street price of 30-50 bucks per tablet, to heroin at as little as 5 bucks a hit. Some die on their very first try of a drug so potent today that it need not be injected. Not only are drugs abailable on every college campus in America, but every hs also

Not sure what Nova has to do with anything but I guarantee them and most other schools with large amounts of upper class white students have far bigger drug issues than SJU.

reasonable suspicion ok to "stop" for a frisk you need an outline of possible weapon or some type of fear of a weapon. How do you articulate "Known" drug dealers in a dorm unless the security guard was privy to their arrest history and I'm sure SJU security is not throwing anyone against the walls. Too much TV fellas and not the real world. The city and I'm sure SJU wants a friendlier softer presence .
