Seth Greenberg / Fired

Calling lawmanfan, calling lawmanfan.

I think the StJ move here is obvious, don't you?

Yeah, we need a coach for the women's team with some experience

If I had the money, I'd give St. John's a million dollars to offer him a one-year gig just to see if he'd bite.

I think he'd be a great women's coach.

Don't see how VT hangs onto any of their young talent - and Seth had done a MAJOR upgrade to the talent level the last 2 years...All Seven of the below are frosh/sophs, except Harrell who is a 2012 commit.

Seth has been burned by a horrible string of illness/injury the last two years. An 8th top 100 RSCI Player, 6'9 230 Florida Transfer Allan Chaney, who would have started at center as a redshirt soph this year, was diagnosed with heart condition that ended his career. Trust me - Virginia Tech had NEVER had 7 top 100 kids on a roster, let alone 8. In addition to losting Chaney, projected starting PF JT Thompson missed 2011 with torn ACL in his left leg, then was lost tor THIS season with a torn ACL in his right leg. Starting Center (actually projected to battle JT Thompson for starting PF before Chaney was declared medically ineligible) Victor Davilla tried to go all season on a bad knee, finally had to shut it down completely the last month of the season. 6'11 230 Danish Freshman Joey Van Zegeren, the expected backup center hurt his back during the preseason exhibition series in Canada and had to redshirt. Despite having to go with their 4th string center and 4th string PF as starters, Seth went 15-16 this year - BUT - ELEVEN of the 16 losses were by 4 points or less, or in overtime. Not unresaonable to assume this team, with its bigs healthy wins 23-25 games and is dancing. CERTAINLY not the freaking coaching staffs fault, for crying out loud.

You're all right - the timing on this really is suspicious. I know Seth was approached about several of the HC spots that opened up immediately after this past season ended. He turned them down to stay at TEch, as one daughter is going to be a Tech Senior, and another will be (or at least WAS planning to be) attending VT next year. He stayed loyal to the school.

Anyway - I really think there's going to be a feeding frenzy for Seth's players. Hey, I live here and love Blacksburg - but the draw for these kids WASN'T the allure of John Denver singing about the Blue Ridge Mountains - it was to play for Seth Greenberg. Unless athletic director Jim Weaver has a BIG name already locked up who can somehow hang onto these kids, this is a DISASTER for Tech Hoops - one that could take years to recover from talent-wise. GOTTA be more to this than is being told. I'm kinda bracing for some kind of scandel.

Dorian Finney Smith - RSCI #22: 6'8 200 can play PF, SF and SG. Frosh.
CJ Barksdale - RSCI #100 6'8 235 PF - Frosh
Robert Brown - RSCI #86  6'4 200 SG - Frosh
Marquis Rankin - Hoopscoop #78 6'1 170 PG - Frosh
Jarell Eddie - Rivals #63 6'7 220 had to play SG, SF and PF due to injuries - Soph
Cardarian Raines - RSCI #95 6'9 239 PF/C scheduled to be 4th string PF- ended up starting C. R-Soph
Montrezel Harrell - RSCI #83 6'7 235 PF - Commit

Interesting spin from Andy Katz:

Former Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg was convinced he had a much-improved team next season. Erick Green would likely be an all-ACC guard. Dorian Finney-Smith is a possible star in the league. Last season’s team had only three seniors. That’s why this reeks of a classic athletic-director move of firing a head coach to set up a winning roster so the new coach has success in year one before a rebuild begins. The timing, with two-plus weeks left in the spring signing period, and the spring semester ending soon, might make it harder for anyone to leave.

It is all very strange. There has to be a lot more to this story.

CRGreen, I really like that area of Virginia. We visited Radford last Summer and then spent some time (not enough) in Asheville, N.C.

With Tech now hiring Seth's former assistant coach (who left three weeks ago to be an assistant at Clemson) as its new head coach, it seems very possible that their kids will stay according to this article (http://sports.yahoo.com/news/johnson-no-better-person-hokies-195019038--ncaab.html;_ylt=Alo.eGOkFqIk6Eb6GIYVy07evbYF). Not that this matters much to us anymore given the recent commitments and our remaining focus on bigs.
