On behalf of the entire athletics department and men’s basketball program – let me begin by saying thank you for your recent purchase of season tickets for the 2019-20 season! We are excited for the start of a new season and our first with Coach Mike Anderson at the helm. In watching practice and workouts for the past few months – I can assure you this is going to be a hard-working and committed group – giving it their absolute all over the course of each 40-minute game. So much fun!
Here is the reason why I write – as a valued season ticket holder (STH) - we want you to have an exclusive first look at our 2019-20 team by attending a closed practice in Carnesecca Arena and then meeting our new coaches and players after the working session! Please mark your calendars for Sunday, October 13th at 3 p.m. to join us for all of the fun (and hard work). This is open to only season ticket holders and your guests. Please show proper identification to check into the event.
We can’t wait to have you see for yourself … the 2019-20 team before anyone else!

Huh... my first thought was they would make you sit in a sauna for 2 1/2 hours. Maybe give you first crack at Wednesday Big East Tournament tickets.

QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2019) – The St. John’s men’s basketball program invites all 2019-20 season ticket holders to an open practice on Sunday, October 13. Festivities will begin at 2 p.m. in the Carnesecca Arena Plaza and will be followed by access to the team’s workout in Carnesecca Arena from 3 – 5 p.m. Season ticket holders are welcome to bring a guest and will be asked to present proper identification to check in to the special event.

On top of receiving exclusive access to Head Coach Mike Anderson’s first open practice at St. John’s, season ticket holders will be treated to a Meet & Greet and autograph session with players and coaches after the training session. Festivities will also include games and inflatables for fans of all ages, as well as giveaways and much more. Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse, a presenting partner of the special event, will also sponsor prizes for lucky fans in attendance.

New season tickets for the 2019-20 campaign are currently on-sale at RedStormTix.com. Packages start at $510 and include all 19 regular-season home games, featuring nine contests against BIG EAST competition. In addition to securing the best seats available with significant savings on a per game basis, season ticket benefits also include:

· Access to tickets for the 2020 BIG EAST Tournament at Madison Square Garden
· Priority for purchasing tickets to postseason games before the general public
· Individual game presale opportunity beginning on October 14 to purchase additional tickets before the general public

Coming off a season that saw the Johnnies win 21 games and make the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2015, the Red Storm will play seven regular season games at Madison Square Garden and 12 at Carnesecca Arena in 2019-20. Six of those Garden games will come during BIG EAST play with the seventh occurring when the Red Storm welcomes West Virginia to Midtown on Dec. 7. Season ticket packages also include admission to the Johnnies’ on-campus exhibition against Queens College on Oct. 30.
 
Major scare at the event, as Heron was on the ground for a couple of minutes. From afar, it looks like a side muscle injury, hopefully just a pull. He is walking (with a small limp), and is trying to stretch it out. As I wrote that, he just came back in.

Would definitely love to hear observations from those who attended.
 
My observations:

1. CMA said this was their 4th practice this WEEKEND! Yikes.
2 Champaine is going to be a good one.
3. PG is going to be a struggle. Those guys can’t shoot.
4. David Caraher is a shooter. Was hitting shots with guys in his face. Should see Pt
5. Roberts doesn’t seem to have improved much. Hands are soft. He’s weak.
6. We’re going to play sloppy ball
7 McGriff and Williams sat out
8. Tarik Owens was there


We’ll finish last in league.

Tough to take anything out of this. This was a practice, not something that they were calling a practice, but was a glorified intersquad scrimmage, which is what Lavin did when they had this before his last year.

We saw drills, drills, and more drills. There was some 5-on-5 play, especially toward the end, but not much, and not for prolonged periods, either. Frankly, it got boring after awhile, though this is probably how it has to be, while Anderson is in the building stages.

I will say this: I did not see one player dog it out there (Williams and McGriff did not participate, but they were there). Some guys seem a step or two ahead of the others (Heron, Figueroa, and Rutherford to name 3, likely because of the experience those guys have), but everyone is giving 100% effort. With Anderson, you go hard, or you go home. That was plainly evident today.

What was also evident, was the attention to detail that Anderson and his staff seem to possess (assistant coach Van Macon was absent - hopefully, he was out on the recruiting trail). Anytime Anderson (or the staff) saw something they didn't like, they would stop play (even when the players were going 5-on-5), and point it out (sometimes, more vociferously then others), then resume. Anderson even participated in some of the drills himself (though only as a passer), if it was needed (sometimes, the guards and the big people would break off into separate drills).

As far as some of the players;

The waiver for Dunn is now much more important then I thought it would be. I think he's worth a few victories, if only because he's the closest thing we have to a true point guard. He seemed the most comfortable in ball handling and passing. He also seems to back down from nobody. That may cost us at times, but will be a positive aspect overall.

Rutherford looks like he can play the point from a defensive perspective, but not offensively, at least, not at this time.

Champagnie and Sears both seemed to have a good nose for the ball. Both have athleticism, and Sears looks like a strong dude, too, so a nice combination there (Earlington also appears to have put on some muscle).

Whether he starts playing games right away, or in December, Steere can not be on the court late in close games in which we are ahead. If he is, the other team will use the hack-a-Steere strategy, to get back in it (actually, as a team we looked pretty lousy from the foul line, but it was a small sample size - Steere looked really bad, though). That being said, he is a legit 6'9" post player.

Nothing positive or negative stood out from any of the others. I didn't pay much attention to Heron or LJ, but they sure didn't look like they've gotten any worse.

Assuming it’s also hard to assess the overall PG situation with McGriff and Williams out as well. Hopefully Dunn gets the waiver.
 
Another observation is the look of Carnesecca. Jumbotron that hung at center court is gone. It's been replaced with banners. Lots of banners grace the walls, from all sports, all throughout. New STJ logos hanging on the walls too.
 
Some more thoughts...

These guys will go hard all 40 minutes.

We will be a pressing high pressure defensive team

Really long practice. If you consider the video session they had in the corner all in it was about 3 hours

Champagne went out early with a twisted ankle. Cam back after few minutes

Heron going down was scary. Looked like hip injury. Gym went complete silent. Thankfully came back

Couple moments when guys didn’t do something right, CMA had’em do 10 push-ups

They’ve removed the screen from above center court. Banners have taken its place. I like the look. Makes the arena feel more spacious and bright.

I liked seeing CMA’s wife there. Seems like they truly do believe in creating family culture.

CMA said that this process is like that of an artist. At first it looks like a mess but will be a masterpiece by the end

Hopefully no one was expecting any offense from Rutherford at all. I doubt he's even close to Boothe's level, and lots of people here disliked Boothe until he was gone. And then we realized that we could have used him in the years following his departure.

We need Dunn badly, and Williams' back to be OK. I expect McGriff to be better than Rutherford, but he wasn't a big scorer in high school.

I'm hoping we get offense from Rutherford in the fact that his defense can shut down opposing point guards, or he can get steals, either of which should lead to easy points for us.

Team plays very hard D but points will be hard to come by.
Rutherford very scrappy on defense with nose for steals but offensively challenged.
Caraher definitely looked good and expect will have prominent role
Will be tough - and worse if Dunn is not eligble.

Few more comments...

Some former players on hand - Boothe, Glover, Fordham
CMA - this is his team...very involved in all aspects of practice
Not going to be a green light to hoist 3s...chided Earlington at one point for taking a 3 early in shot clock

really appreciate the honesty pf someone from the school today. One of the 114 guys was talking to him and said " totally understand CMA 25 minutes of hell and 15 minutes of what the hell ae they doing " and the person said from the school " no from your seats in the upper level it's definitely 40minutes of hell "
 
Some of it seems to echo what we thought. We are definitely under-talented for a Big East roster and will take a few years to get rolling in terms of having a more competitive level of player overall I think. Former staff left us Heron and Figs but very little else and had to scramble to put this together. We should be ok if we can get Dunn eligible, get Steere on the court and find another guy or two to get a top 7-8 rotation going.
