Season Retrospective and Final Grades

Anytime you beat a tournament team it is a good win. 70% of the Big East should be in the tournament this year. We had about half a dozen good wins, whereas last year we had 1.

I expected about 15 wins, and since we were far better second half of the year I'd give the team a B.

Next year I expect to reach the tournament, and we are in a position to do that, so this year's goals were met.

Mullin: B - began the year as "no way this guy is gonna stick around", ended the year as having his guy's back in the gtown game, running all the huddles, and being engaged start to finish. B is qualified for where he began (zero experience). Is now comfortable in the role of coach.

Ponds: A - everything we hoped for. Uncanny ability at his size to slip past defenders in mid air and get to the hoop unimpeded. He and Lovett can shoot from the outside off the dribble both w 3 point accuracy. Amazing leaper for his size, example his grab and slam rebound vs. GTown that is no easy feet at his height.

Lovett: B to B+ - at times looks every bit as good as Ponds and sometimes better. Not as consistently good, but if he stays we not have a rolls royce backcourt but maybe a mini cooper one.

Mussini: Solid B maybe even a little better. Improved in almost every way when used in the right role. Nailed open 3's better than anyone on our team, stopped the tunnelvision turnover passes, and worked so hard on defense that Mullin didn't hesitate to use him in a 3 guard offense with Ponds and Lovett. For those who say he is very slow, they are dead wrong - not a speedster but rarely got burned off the dribble.

Owens: B- It's easy to overvalue him because we were so thin up front. He plays hard, blocks shots, rebounds, and defends. Offensively very undeveloped, and any shots while guarded closely become an adventure even from within 8 feet. At worst a serviceable big man, but has lots of upside.

Ellison C - Easy to crap on this guy because his shot selection is so questionable. Then you look at his stat line, and its much better than you would have thought, including assists. It looks like he's grown an inch or two, which with his ball handling for his size could help him develop into a fine small forward.

Ahmed C - graduated from the same school as Ellison, namely "U passed me the ball so I must shoot it college". Easy to overvalue him because he puts up points, but being reckless on offense took us out of many games and even more possessions. If he refines shot selection can be an asset.

Amar: D - Amar is big, works hard, looks like a player and he looks like a player. Only problem is, he's not much of a player, but was an important big body when Sima fled.

Williams: C (if you throw in all his injuries and free throw shooting). He is a big body and works hard, but didn't accomplish enough on the court.

All others - not enough minutes.

We won 20? Who knew

Our small backcourt - B's to A. You want to penalize them for being short?

Our frontcourt C's and D's mostly. Tale of the season. Psst - College basketball is a game played by really tall guys

I would include the wins against Seton Hall and Marquette as good wins.

Middling BE teams should beat middling BE teams at home. If they beat either of those teams on the road I would consider them good wins as well.

Considering previous season and how competitive Big East teams are overall I'd say every conference win is a good win.

To win is good, to win on the road or against top teams is quality.

When you pay for tickets, any BE win is good. I didn't think a single BE game on our schedule was a gimme, did you? Let's not confuse change terminology mid stream to define a good win as a quality win..

We won 20? Who knew

If we get a CBI invite I'm revising my grades: everyone gets an A, except Mussini who gets an A plus and Ahmed who gets an F.
Red Storm Report did a segment on assistant to the head coach Luca Virgilio another Italian you can get your hate on for.
