Season Retrospective and Final Grades

First some brief comments on the last 5 or so games of this season.  Beating Georgetown twice and in the first round of the Big East tourney was special.  However, as great as it was to beat the hated Hoyas last night, today's demolition by Nova showed just how far away we are from the upper tier of the Big East.
Over the last 5 games key players, starting with Marcus Lovett, performed poorly. Marcus averaged only 9 points over the last few games of the season but more importantly was ineffective in leading the offense and played what can only be described as "Mussini defense".  After the first 5 minutes today he was rendered irrelevant by Nova's defense and height advantage at the guard position.  Three other players who get major minutes all averaged bench player points.  Ellison 6 pts per game, Yakwe and Owens barely 3 points per game.  That level of offensive incompetence translated into more losses than wins this season.

What is needed to improve, other than experience, is better players.  We all hope the Simon and Clark will make an impact.  However, unless a 5th year big is secured our inside weaknesses will continue into next year.
Yakwe is not going to grow 4 inches and I doubt his offense will ever be a threat.  Owens needs to get on a radical weight gain program.  Ellison may never be starting material but should be an adequate 6th man in another year.  Ponds and Ahmed are the most complete players on the team and I see only improvements with them.
Marcus Lovett has played the last five games with what appears to be one foot out of the door.  The rest of the team has very little upside.

The coaching improved with Mullin taking a more active role but he has not been able to inspire a work ethic on defense where, except for Owens and Mussini, the players seemingly decide when and how much effort they will put into defense in any given game.

Now for the final grades.  Please copy and insert your grades.

Coaching:  B  Improved but inconsistent.  No defensive culture established.  Poor offensive sets.
Lovett:  B  Very good player for his height but lacks defense and leadership on offense.
Ponds: A  Except for dogging it on defense he exceeded expectations.  Rendered Mussini a role player.
Ahmed B  Hard nosed player who will improve over the off season.
Yakwe  D  Was not a factor most games and had we had Clark this year would have been a bench player.
Ellison C  Had a handful of good games. Was ineffective most games. Will improve.
Owens  B  Plays hard but has no muscle for Big East play.
Mussini  B Played some good games as a role player but his defensive deficiencies hurt team.
Williams B  Played well in many games but physical liabilities held him back.
Freudenberg D  Nowhere near ready for college basketball.  Slow and lacks confidence. Question mark.
Alibegovic C  Never a factor in any game. Plays hard but bench player at best.
Recruiting B  Two good transfers coming but struck out with prime targets.
Season C  Played some very ugly games and inexplicably lost to LIU and Delaware State.  Should have been a 16 to 18 win season but major distractions included Slice departure and Sima transfer.  Program still lacks stability but we will have a better picture next year with recruiting and coaching.

Unless the 6'10 Owens gains about 70 lbs. and goes from about 190 to 260 we need a legitimate big. Right now our recruiting is a zero as the 2 transfers are last years recruits and we currently have no NEW players coming in. I expect that to change of course.

Like I said in my post on and following the G Town game, don't go for Fool's Gold.

That Georgetown team was extremely flawed and so are we, and though we eked out a victory which could have and maybe should have been a loss, some posters, were predicting a W against Nova, or at least expecting a good showing. The poster who feared a 'high' double digit loss probably didn't realize how 'high' those double digits could get, edging toward 50 at one point.

I hated watching that game today. I want the coaching staff to teach our players how awful this was so that it is never repeated.

Sorry didn't belong in this thread.

Season retrospective: overall = vast improvement,

Final grade a gentlemen's C, but that following a Blutarsky "F" last year, thus vast improvement.

In order for me to give fair grades I'm going to have to wait a few days to let the pain from this embarrassing beatdown today subside

I am a generous grader but if I waited a few days and was more sober the grades would have been more critical.
Like the last coaching regime where the coaching was about "average", Mullin and staff will only be as successful as the talent they sign. Next year they need to win more games and not having a losing record but even if they win 18 games next year, if they start to miss out on their prime local targets I don't see a long future for Mullin.
In the 4 years Steve Lavin actually coached his teams went to 2 NIT'S and 2 NCAA's. If Mullin can't sign the players he will never be a winning coach. As many knowledgeable fans have stated, the honeymoon is over.
Unfortunately, we have had too many honeymoons and too many bad marriages at St. John's.

Starting the season I think anyone would of said 7 wins in the Big East season would be a successful year, especially when 14 of the 18 games in conference are against probable tournament teams. We definitely have some glaring weaknesses but there was significant improvement. Hoping everyone comes back next year, and with some reinforcements I think we could be a tournament team.

The way I look at it is we won 14 games and had a shitty preseason. Instead of starting 6-7 if we went 10-3 that woulda put us at 18 wins. Win 2 more BE games and it gets us to 20 wins and most likely in the tournament.
I think the team was good enough at the end of the year to get a 4 game improvement in the win column in the pre-conference play if we play a similar schedule. So I'm viewing a 2 game improvement in BE play is all we need to go dancing next year.

There were 3 good wins this year, at Syracuse, at Providence and Butler. There were the two awful losses and a questionable one to ODU. Giving the team any more than a C is generous. Last year was a D- so that is improvement. Hope it continues trending upward next year.

D- or F (true) for last season or even C (generous) for this season would get an asterisk referencing perspective but even so I'd put SHU win as a good win too both because they are a good team and a bad matchup for us and we pulled out a W.

Tulane was against inferior comp but it was a fun game to watch seeing some of the potential. Syracuse was just unfunking real. I've rarely enjoyed anything so much. With Yukon stinking, blowing out Xcuse two years in a row including a historic beat down at the dome, beating a matchup nightmare G'town twice it is like the Universe is starting to right itself. Now if we can start to see some old school St John's defense I think both yours and my BP will level off.

It's really all relative. Compared to last year's team, there was vast improvement. How many programs led by a coach who never coached before could go from a barren roster, and a 1-17 conference record to anything better than 7-11 and one conference tourney win? How many established coaches could do that.

Yes, a C is fair when comparing the season to those of conference teams that will get post season bids. Maybe even generous.

But if we compare this season to last, it would clearly be a B or B+ year, because without a doubt the program is headed in the right direction and the team improved substantially.

pre season I thought 15 wins was reasonable. So only 1 off and less early season wins than I thought but did slightly better in conference play.

I thought Mullin looked much more like a coach on the sidelines during games as opposed to last year. Pretty much few complaints from me on that all season.

The blowouts and non competitiveness during losses concerns me and if that doesn't improve then we won't make another big step forward

Post Nova anger gone so now I can give them a C which I think is fair. Could have been even a B- ( because I was so happy Mullin tried attacking the Gtwoi staff ) and if we didnt get completely destroyed yesterday but that was just a reminder to me of how much we need to improve our defense because it's pretty horrible

I will play:

Coaching: B Improved overall; agree need more emphasis on D; liked the passion (especially recently)
Lovett: B Hope he stays, and if so, improves his D and consistency
Ponds: A, and will only improve
Ahmed C Too inconsistent and not refined enough for this level of play; hopefully that improves for next year
Yakwe F Sorry, he was a complete non-factor, which made him a complete liability, as a presence in the middle and rebounding were musts form him. He regressed big time. Really disappointing.
Ellison C Should be a serviceable reserve
Owens B+ Was a complete surprise and if teamed with a real big could be a major factor
Mussini B Role was right-sized this year and despite his limitations, hustles and can be a good off-the-bench offensive weapon; somewhat unfairly criticized
Williams B
Freudenberg D Should be an F, but since he is a newbie and maybe adjusting to a new country etc. give him a pass for that. But, did not see anything that would lead me to believe he will be any kind of contributor on this level
Alibegovic D
2017/18 Recruiting Incomplete Excluding the 2 kids that sat out, nothing, but hopefully more to come
Overall: B+ Vast improvement in BE play and talent level. Really could not have expected more.

I would include the wins against Seton Hall and Marquette as good wins.

Middling BE teams should beat middling BE teams at home. If they beat either of those teams on the road I would consider them good wins as well.

PS Neither of those teams had a conference road win against any team besides Depaul until the last day of the season when the Hall beat Butler and Marquette beat X. My point is besides the top couple teams road wins in the BE are not easy to come by ever, and this year unless you are playing Depaul or Gtown.

This is a really tough season to grade. We had some positive things like the nice wins mentioned already but we had some awfull losses in and out of conference. We need to keep our players and get much tougher on D. We still need a big banger/enforcer. We need to compete evey nght, something we currently are unable to do.

On the plus side, Ponds, Owens, Lovett, Williams. On the neutral side, Mussini, Ahmed, recruiting & coaching. On the negative side, Ellison, Yakwe, Freudenburg, Alibegovich. Hoping Clark & Alibegovich are positives next year and Lovett leaving does not offset this. Hoping to get better and sustain. I really crave sustainability.

Mullin-C
Much better than last year but has to get his team to defend better and dictate to Matt A the kind of players he needs to fit want he wants to do. Roster uneven and that falls on coach.

Owens-B+
Needs to continue to work on his jumper and ability to gather and go up strong. Also eat a cheeseburger or two , lift weights, visit Roger Clemens, drink beer, something! Plus lose the underoo look.

Yakwe-F-
WTF????

Ahmed-C
Team would be best with him as a 6th man but we will not be talented enough for that. Shot selection and free throw shooting must get better!

Ponds-B+
Needs to improve D, effort and point guard skills.

Lovett-B-
With better talent I think you would have seen better point guard skill set. Was fun to watch until the last 4 games or so. Good luck!

Amar-C
I have softened on him. He is fine in his role as occasional player. Nothing wrong with him as 12th man.

Williams-A+
Too bad he has been hurt. Plays hard and mostly smart.

RF-F-
They should have brought a poet to adequately describe how putrid he was this year.

Ellison-C
75% of the time he is a D player. 25% an A
Has size and some decent guard skills. To careless with the ball, mistake prone, doesn't always play hard and I will never trust the jumper.
Hard guy to figure out.

Mussini-B-
Perfect 4th guard. Send him in to knock down some open threes if he doesn't sit him. Unfortunately so small and nonathletic that even when hitting jumpers he is sometimes a detriment because he can't guard a lamp post.

I would include the wins against Seton Hall and Marquette as good wins.

Middling BE teams should beat middling BE teams at home. If they beat either of those teams on the road I would consider them good wins as well.

Considering previous season and how competitive Big East teams are overall I'd say every conference win is a good win.

To win is good, to win on the road or against top teams is quality.

I think any win against a NCAA caliber team is good. So Butler, Providence, Hall, Marquette and Cuse all good wins in my book. Unfortunately we couldn't take at least one of the Minny, Mich St and/or VCU trio.
