Scholarship Situation

Not the be all and end all but FWIW Scout has STJ involved to a greater or lesser extent with 13 players from the 15 class and only three could be considered even close to one and done.

Well that's good news to me at least. I would much rather see us becoming a PROGRAM rather than seemingly scurrying for players every year. I realize that is a bit over-stated and unfair but we are going into Lavin's 5th year and I still have no idea what identity the program is trying to establish.

According to ESPN, we made offers to 7 high school players from the class of 2014. That is way, way below almost every other BE team except Nova. For instance, Georgetown, Providence, Xavier, Hall offered 15-20 players apiece. I still don't understand what the strategy was for 2014.

Yes, I believe Otis stated we missed on over twenty. Let's not allow facts to destroy a good story. Mmmmmmm....

We need to get involved with more than 13 players if we need to fill 7-9 spots.

We did miss on every big recruit from McCollough on down. As I remember it, most boarders didn't give it much thought as "we were a deep team, so those guys would go where the minutes are."

Well, here's the link. Although I notice that Cunningham is not showing up as being offered.

Compare that to Xavier, which was in a similar situation to us personnel-wise heading into this season:

Hey Dog,

Please see the below link from Rivals which identifies 15 recruits which it claims St.john's offered scholarships to during the 2o14 recruiting cycle. Note that the list does not include the newly found junior college gems which St.Johns pursued after the season ended.

Otis my man! Bringing the wood!

Whether we offered 7 or 25, what's the difference? We had a number of scholarship openings coming up and we are scrambling to sign 2nd and 3rd tier prospects in May.

Our rivals all had the better and more complete recruits locked up my October in most cases.

We supposedly put up w Lavins deficiencies as a coach because he's an elite recruiter. Well anyone could have signed Thomas and ADR, so what exactly does he offer again?

My point was that if we only offered 7, then that is just woefully inadequate to secure a decent recruiting class. Hence Xavier, G'town, Prov, Hall, etc -who all offered 20 or so --had great classes and we didn't. So to your point, what exactly was the coaching staff doing?

The act of "offering" doesn't relay whether our staff is working hard or not. Anyone can call up a recruit once, offer him, and rarely speak to him again. I'd honestly rather hear that we offered 10 players and spent a respectable amount of time recruiting each and every one. Now, I don't recall hearing much of anything from 2014 recruits saying St. John's was actively after them, but multiple 2015 recruits have.

My point is, the staffs intent is clear as day. Go all in on 2015. That's been their plan, it still is their plan. Some claim that the staff should've known about the departures that came at the end of the year, but we don't really know that as a fact. I personally don't agree with their plan to basically skip recruiting during the 2014 class, no one agrees with it.

To me, if Lavin was as great of a recruiter as people make him out to be, I feel he should've been able to spend quality time on 2014 class while keeping tabs on the 2015 class at the same time. Why he didn't? Who knows, but it's useless wasting time and energy complaining about it at this point, we just gotta work with what we have.

I just hope our obvious emphasis on the 15 class pays off, and we get many quality recruits.

I think the answer to your last question has been mentioned on every thread so it shouldn't be too hard for you to look.
