Scholarship Situation

Coach has said that one of his goals was to try to even out the classes
We currently have 3 open scholarships
We also have 4 rising seniors and 1-2 guys who could potentially leave after next season (Jordan and/or Obekpa)
Worst case scenario - we do not sign anyone else for next year and the 2 underclassmen both leave - we would have 9 available schollies for 2015
I'm not advocating bringing in players to fill up the roster but the thought of 8-9 slots to fill for 2015 brings us right back to the situation that Lavin inherited
While things have occurred that are beyond Lavin's control (kids leaving early or transferring), we will, once again, be in a rough situation next year

It will certainly be a tough situation but maybe not as bad as three years ago. Unless the NCAA does something about its ludicrous transfer policies there will be plenty of players looking for a better situation than the one they find themselves in next March which has now become a prime recruiting period.

Yes, but without a hardship waiver, D1 transfers next March will have to sit a year, which won't help us for 2015.

Except it's much easier to transfer and play without sitting out then it used to be. That's not to say it's a preferred position to be in but not as difficult as it used to be.

This accurately describes the situation. I know the board frowns upon holding the head coach accountable for such things, but.........

Basically same situation this year and who have we gotten?

I don't think the scholarship distribution is that bad. 2015 was going to be a big hit regardless of the coach that took over for Norm. Next season we'll have:

Frosh: Adonis Delarosa, (Myles Stewart)
Sophs: Rysheed Jordan, Keith Thomas, Felix Balamou, Christian Jones, (David Lipscomb)
Juniors: Chris Obekpa, Joey Delarosa
Seniors: D'Angelo Harrison, Jamal Branch, Phil Greene, Dom Pointer

I can't see Jordan in the first round or early second round next season even with a good year. CO is not a lock to leave either....perhaps returning for one big last run will motivate them to forego mid to late 2nd round draft prospectus?

I'd really like to pickup a four-year freshman guard this summer. I would feel really good about the future if we did. It is a solid core...sprinkle in some studs like Diallo and Briscoe and it should be a solid team.

Don't bet the ranch on Obekpa & Jordan being here after this season. Plan accordingly.

Yes, and I think you could have said the same thing this time last year about Sampson. No one was envisioning him having a mediocre season and the expectation was that he'd at the very least seriously consider the draft in 2014.

I think Sampson going undrafted will be a sobering event for the duo. He claimed to be hearing about first round talk...I think the mid to late second round grades combined with Sampson's failure to be drafted will be enough. Who knows these days, though.

Really, you post this absurd coment. Do you just read posts you just want to read. There are a lot of threads questioning Lavin.

Umm...every thread eventually bashes Lavin.

In order to have a shot at an "elite" 2015 class, St. Johns has to win early and become ranked early in the season. Briscoe & Diallo would already be locked up had Lav not failed this season. Most top prospects will have decided by the end of year so none of this "we'll be good in February" bs from Lavin again next season. The team needs to schedule tough games to get into the top-25 early in order to have a shot at a quality 2015 class.

At the rate we are getting transfers we really don't have to worry.

All this (other than what I've highlighted in bold) is factual, right?

I don't think it's at all fair to say that we could have locked up Briscoe and Diallo at this point. Briscoe's father in particular has made it clear that he wants to see how things shake out next season in terms of team performances. But to that point, I agree with your statement that we need to come out very strong, and early, to attract the kind of class we need.

Really!? You know this for a fact!?

I know this changes the thread a little but personally I think we should change the recruiting strategy we seem to be following. IMO, we have gotten much less than expected results with the group of players recruited in Lavin's first two years, regardless of how highly they were rated. We SEEM to be putting most of our eggs in Briscoe and Diallo for 2015 and I would be shocked if we got both; frankly I would be surprised if we got either. I know there is some evidence to the contrary but when push comes to shove I believe they will go to one of the "big boys." There has been ample evidence of teams having success w/o playing the one and done game because again frankly, I just don't think SJU has the program juice to go that way as a recurring strategy.
