Yeasterday;

@Tariq_NPH: Rowan Barrett Jr pretty damn good 2day. Not going to hype anything up. Let me just say, those that know, know. Those that dont, will find out.

"Help eradicate Otis Karmacide" :)

Unfortunately Lavin has no clue as to where Toronto is and there were only three kids from Toronto drafted in the first round last year and the previous two first picks of the last two NBA drafts. That coupled with the fact that Rowan is the head of Basketball Canada would lead one to believe that maybe our staff should try to be close to Rowan Barrett. ?????

We should offer legacy scholarships to all division 1 level children of former players. Boys and Girls.

Toronto seems to be putting out more talent than New York over the last decade.
I saw some tape on a young kid from Canada, Simi Shittu, last year that was unreal. I think he's ony a freshman...6'8...future first rounder. I'd be all over that kid if I was any coach in the states.

Rowan Barrett little before my time. Can someone tell me what kind of player he was? Did his teams enjoy any success? Has he been close with the school/program since he left?

Athletic wing recruited by Brian M. Not a dead on shooter as I recall, more of a slasher. (Our specialty) Don't know how close he has stayed to the program.

Very good athlete, not a great shooter or scorer. Problem was he was asked to do too much, and not used properly.

He would have been a superb 6th/7th man to bring defense, and energy. Played with Lopez, Zendon, and Turner, and had a nice senior year.

Biggest highlights were during the consecutive wins at the Garden against Louisville and then over an Iverson-led Georgetown. Those were the lean Mahoney years. Heck, Rashon McCloud played great those games, and transferred to Duke after that season because he realized (or someone alerted him of it) midway through his sophomore season he wasn't sleeping in a dorm.

Anyway, I remember one play in particular in that Georgetown game. SJU led late, and Felipe was isolated against Iverson.

The crowd got into as they were watching the two prized recruits go mano a mano. As the shot clock ticked down, Felipe made his drive, a couple more Hoyas collapsed on him, but he kicked it out to an open Barrett for a baseline three. He hit it, essentially icing the game. I was there with Zanman, and if he ever drinks enough coffee to help him get through this, maybe he can add something.

Barrett had a really good game against Louisville and in his post game excitement said uconn (their next opponent) could not check him. Well, they did.

The probability of my post answering your question is very remote. I got caught up in some nice memories of an otherwise dreadful 1995 season (Mahoney's last).

He should also be all over 6 10 Jordie Tishimanga who I wrote about months ago who is doing very well in his second year at prep school in the U.S. whose two younger brothers play on my younger sons team. I love having to hear every weekend from Jordi's father about how hard Providence and Georgia Tech are recruiting him. I just want to throw up as we are not even in the discussion and the kid can be ours for the taking.
Then there is Kentebe ( junior ) Farquhar who was previously the number one player in Canada for the class of 2018 I believe who has moved to play at a small school in Philly called Christian Academy. He is an amazing talent whose AAU team won almost every tournament they were in in the states last summer and who at the age of 15 played in the Nike International Challenge in LA last summer for Canada with other members of his Brookwood Elite program against 17 and 18 year old players.
6 9 Anthony Longpre who has also left Montreal for a school in Maryland and is doing great. A 6 9 kid who can shoot , not for us. Wisconsin is calling but we don't make any effort to communicate with the kid or his coaches.
The list goes on as to players we could easily be involved with who for whatever reason we are not , but who would be big time contributors at this level but not for the fact that they live in cold snowy places.

By the way to add to Marillac's question, Rowan was captain his senior year and had a monster game against Louiseville on national tv scoring 32 points in a 2 point win. He graduated we a degree in business administration , has since obtained an MBA , and was a bank manager prior to accepting the position with Basketball Canada. A great guy who would be a friend of the program.

Rowan Barrett was a poor man's Dom Pointer (this years Dom). He did have the huge game against Louisville. He was extremely athletic.

Barrett wanted to run and dunk every single possession. He was extremely athletic and fast as I recall got some looks from the NBA but never stuck. He played pro overseas and for Canada in the Olympics.

I might be pulling a Brian Williams and misremembering, but I think a lot of us tend to romanticize his stay here because of his great overseas career. Not sure he ever put up huge numbers here, although I definitely remember him stealing the show in Felipe's first game.

I was thinking more of a poor man's Lavor Postell, with a little Paris Horne thrown in.

All I remember from those days is the lady who used to knit during the games and all the fights we used to get in with opposing teams' fans.

I only needed 4 cups of coffee before I finished your assessment of Barrett, which by the way was spot on.

Can't wait for your memories in the James Scott thread. I'm pretty sure we think of the same moment when we hear that name. :woohoo:

Barrett was a very streaky shooter, but a better one than Dom. Thing is, he'd have a solid game -- including a couple where he looked unstoppable from the outside (didn't he have a monster game against Michigan on CBS, or am I confusing them with Louisville?) -- then be ice cold the next two. As Kranmars noted in his post, he was an athletic player who ideally would have been, say, the second guy coming off the bench. Better coaching would've helped as well.

Edit (from redstormsports.com): He averaged 5.5 points and 2.0 rebounds in 104 career games. He enjoyed his best season as a senior, finishing third on the team in scoring with 10.0 points per game, while grabbing 2.6 rebounds.

James Scott had a monster game vs. Michigan on national TV.

Yup, Barrett's 30 pt game was against Louisville. Never thought he got a fair shake in first few years of his SJU career as he had to share PT with fan favorite and Mahoney neighbor Fred Lyson who shot like 25% but seemed like the fans in the section I was in (right behind our bench) only remembered his makes.

Not as good as Pointer, less athletic and skilled. Better shooter but certainly not a good shooter. Averaged 5.5 per game and 10 his senior year. Generally have positive memories of him. Not sure why. Maybe because he was a Canadian.

Fans have been looking for the next Chris Mullin for decades. The only thing Lyson had in common with Chris was the school they attended and complexion.

Was that the 360 degree dunk game?
