Maher on it.
Ronda fought like a mental midget. And Holm is a solid kickboxer/boxer, good footwork, and sharp punches. A rematch might be interesting, but that wasn't even close either. I wonder if Rousey is indeed a bit like a Tyson (the Douglas/Tyson comparisons are already being used) in that she don't have the "psychological makeup," she was a bully, straight up. Sometimes when a bully is exposed, like Tyson was, they're just never the same. And Rousey has her head in Hollywood and was going to take a break anyway. But she was transcendent--that anyone even bothered to post about a women's MMA match on THIS site just proves it.
Congrats to Holm. Many felt she was pushed into this fight a bit too early (only transitioning to MMA what, two years ago?), but she stepped up.
peace.
I like the Gracie comp betters an Tyson. Women's mma is still new. Roused had a skill set of judo and arm bars that the newbie fighter couldn't defend. It was only a matter off me that she lost. I didn't watch this one hit it sounds like maybe she got cocky and tried to outbox a boxer instead of making it the boxer vs. wrestler matchup.
Gracie comparison is apt, but so is the Tyson one.
MMA itself is still a rapidly progressing sport. I remember watching the first few UFC cards before Cablevision stopped carrying it for a few years and even had tickets to the an event from a Gracie-affiliated company in Brooklyn back in 92 or 93 but got canned as the sport is still banned in this state. Admittedly, I don't follow it nearly as much as I used to, but different trends develop in this sport often. So yeah, like Gracie, Rousey just got surpassed. It's the nature of all sports really. No shame in that. Rousey was a beast and elevated herself to a global phenomenon.
And that's why the comparison to Tyson/Douglass is also warranted. The size of the upset in terms of public expectations was as big. Just like Douglass, when he was on his game, was good, so was Holm. Rousey had a ton of success bullying other fighters and beating them mentally. She would fight their game more in recent fights to prove she was superior. It didn't work last night is all. So for me anyway, the psychology of the fight itself coupled with the buzz the upset created, it's on par with Tyson/Douglass.
peace.
