Roberts over Keita

Of all the guys mentioned, Roberts is the only one who is in any way a traditional big in terms of style of play and of course he is pretty thin but I like his athleticism and nose for the ball. Steere will be the most complete I'm thinking but he's more of a 3/4 than a pure big but I don't see him getting out-muscled regardless of the competition. Keita wants to be a guard but unfortunately not a good rebounding guard! If he rebounded that would bring a LOT to this team. Otherwise it is like fools gold. I like having him on the floor for his size and he plays good defense sporadically but I don't like seeing him defending at the top of the key but I guess that is a philosophy thing.

Another nice thing about Roberts is his wheels. Even when he sticks around our opponent's basket for an offensive rebound, he can still hustle back in time. Kid really has a nice stride.

Like Steere, not a high maintenance kid either.

glad to hear that about both

Well Steere just transferred here, Keita is only a soph and already transferred, Robert's mom said he is patient regarding playing time and if I'm not mistaken Manuel signed. So barring Manuel having eligibility issues (which has been hinted at) who exactly won't be here and why? You all do know there is no rule against having 4 "bigs" and I use that term loosely given that Robert's looks to be about 6'7. Some teams have 7-8 guys 6'7 or bigger.

who is the fourth?
Technically we have ZERO bigs in the traditional sense. Steere may be close but at 6'8 it will be a wait and see with him. All the other players are more power forwards with little emphasis on "power". I wanted players 6'8 or bigger who were strong rebounders and a decent shooting touch. I'm skeptical we have those skills. Ironic that wish one had the abilities of a Tariq Owens but Josh Roberts doesn't have his shooting touch.
Unfortunately it is what it is.

I watch Steere pass by Tyrique Jones on the handshake line. They looked very similar in size.

A 3/4? He’s 6’9 260. If he plays any three then we are in trouble.

We don’t need “traditional” bigs. We just need kids that want and know how to work the paint a bit. I’m watching Grant Williams of Tennessee who’s like 6’6” 235 PF, and he’s destroying vs Uk right now in the post. Boxes out, scores on the block etc.. it isn’t size that’s an issue. Not at all...

I love how Roberts is coming along. Kid is really a gazelle. Our team looks faster when he’s out there and he’s strong with a good motor. He’s got solid upside. Alongside two bigs like Steere and Manuel and I think we are certainly heading in the right direction with our post players. Not knocking Keita as he’s also gotten better, but he won’t be a guy we can rely on to play too many minutes because he offers little offense and defense is still lackluster considering we get murdered by other “bigs” the same size as we are.
At this point, neither is very good or very useful for long stretches. While I agree that Roberts seems to bring more energy, I'm not sure either player has an upside that would preclude us from recruiting over them. Each of them routinely get layup attempts blocked, which is indicative of little to no big man offensive ability.

Bottom line: If Roberts was handed Keita minutes, I don't think the results would change very much. Big men can develop radically start to finish in their collegiate careers, but I'm not sure either of these guys has a high side like that.
Start him vs. and give him 25minutes, nothing to lose, we get nothing from Keita.
Plus we need a big on Femi anyway, we suck vs. this type of team.

So I say what's to lose, lets see what he gives us with major minutes.

At the very least, Roberts will make the opposing big run back on D at full speed.

Watching Roberts and imagining 20 pounds of muscle with his quickness and nose to the ball and the player that came to mind was actually Dennis Rodman.

Did someone suggest Keita has a good shot? Which airball from inside of 15feet gave you that impression?

I believe there was a tweet earlier in the year from someone training Roberts, saying that he had gained a bunch of weight since the season had started.
