RJ Luis

NBA body/ athleticism- ✔️
In game composure/decision making-❌
Mid range- showed flashes of a solid 15ft shot
Handle- not great

I can see him going to a school back home if he isn’t 1st rd material . Let’s see how his workouts turnout

Unfortunately this is the new norm. NCAA or has to start setting rules or regulations to this. Example; minimum 2yr commitment/contract. I’m All about these kids getting paid, but not fair to the team and coaches literally having to re-build a roster every year.

College BB is now a pay for play game . If RJ isn’t NBA material right now , his College NIL will probably be several Millions of Dollars .

RJ is from Florida. Florida will have Clayton $$$$ freed up as soon as they win the Championship or , lose before .

It doesn’t take a Rocket Scientist to think Coach Golden or the Florida Donors wouldn’t want to offer the BE POY and All American a bank load of money .

Especially after being pulled from a 2 point game with 4:56 to go .
And, RP seemingly throwing in the towel with a line up of Zuby , Scott ( 1-10) , Smith ,Lefty , Prey .
Even Rick doesn’t have enough chutzpah to think that lineup could win the game ..

So , it was a insult to RJ ,,no other way to explain it ..

Pitino hasn’t covered himself with glory in this instance and he doesn’t seem to explain it further ..

It’s a loss to us , as fans and the team . RJ isn’t a easy replace . Thinking Hopkins or , others will just fit in and replace him , is a stretch .

If RJ goes to another BE school , which I doubt , it’s still part of what the game has become .

Could Creighton afford him ? UCONN ? Nova ?

If he’s in the portal , I would say , RJ will wear another uniform next season

I hope he isn’t .,

He’s given a lot to this Program and School and , you can’t take away the fact of being only the 3 rd BE POY in history .

And ,a All American .

People will say , he didn’t do this or didn’t do that but , BE Coaches thought he did enough .

So , should we .
Ahhhhh yeah poor poor RJ, he was picked on by Rick Pitino and to no fault of himself.

Sick of some people and their crying.

Again it's not about his shooting, it was his not hustling to go after loose balls, 1 on 3 ball, etc.

Yes, RJ was great when he wanted to be, last Saturday he didn't want to by in and guess happened, Rick benched his ass, awwwwwwwwww😢

Rick didn't insult RJ, RJ insulted himself.

RJ is a young man, if he wants to get 2-3mill then I'll say God bless you kid, roll in all the funds you can, it'll be a life changer.

Rick and SJU won't miss a beat, he knows who he wants and we'll be a Top10 program again, it's just that simple.

Really hope we can f'ing move on soon and celebrate the new comers that wants to be here.
DAMNNNNNNNNNN

I fully believe your last line is not true. If RJ came back to Rick today with a reasonable ask/number (to SJU) I’d be shocked if they didn’t take him back. Very soon that won’t be the case bc they will allot the $ elsewhere.
I would love to be wrong. I truly enjoyed watching RJ all year. I hope he comes back but am preparing for the worst.

Agreed. But could be a timing issue. If they haven’t reached a deal on NIL $ and RJ wants to test NBA waters, he won’t know about the NBA until mid to late May, well after the portal has closed. Makes sense to enter the portal and do the NBA thing. Otherwise, if he decides to return to college his only option would be SJU and he would lose any negotiating leverage.

Two things can be true at the same time:

1. R.J. leaving is a big loss; and

2. We may be a better team next year without him depending on how the roster plays out.

Loved (mostly) watching him play here and wish him the best, but far more focused on the kids who will be wearing St. John’s red next year.
I really understand your point of view and am not critical of it. For me though, each kid is one of us, and becomes part of the fabric of the program, the university, and us.

If I kiss them goodbye and wish them well but just look forward to next year's team, i wouldn't feel quite as invested as I am.

I want RJs decisions to work well for him and us. It just feels like a shitty way to exit the season after all the bright spots.

If we were a professional sports team I'd be inclined to feel a little different.

As Big East player of the year, BET tourney MVP, and 2nd team All American, RJ has done more to resurrect this program than any single kid (yes, kid) in 25 years at least.

If he does leave, and those of you who thinks he is already gone (with ample reason to believe that), I just feel really shitty to not be eyernally grateful for what this kid accomplished here.

He may or may not be NBA material but that's irrelevant to me. He played his ass off, and if he was awful last game, it wasn't like he hit the doors like Curtis Redden who when benched openly rooted for the opponent. In fact there are others who did far worse (D'Angelo Harrison for one) who got their shot of redemption.

"I need a shot of redemption.
don't want to end up like a cartoon in cartoon graveyard"

Thanks RJ. Your team gave us the best season in 25 years at least. Thanks, kid.

Harrison was a warrior who wanted desperately to return to SJ. Luis is either controlled by his agent who is interested only in money, or Luis is a snowflake of little character. I don’t think Luis team understands how respected Pitino is in NBA. If Luis is borderline, a few well placed words from Rick will send that ship under quickly.

I want RJ back....you'd be crazy not to. I'll let that part play out without commenting. I'll add a few on-court thoughts:

1. RJ played with literally the best fit for him in the country with Kadary. Kadary's unselfishness was crazy and was the only reason this team had chemistry. He's unlikely to get that anywhere again -- even here.

2. Sanon takes a ton of the same shots that RJ did. RJ didn't compete with anyone for those shots this year. Nobody went on-on-one for jumpers with any kind of regularity but RJ. That is the easiest part of RJ's game to replace, and you can make the argument that Sanon is better off taking those shots right now.

3. RJ's biggest contribution IMO was his relentless play on the glass and his overall hustle. If we don't get him back, that will be the hardest thing to replace. I've never seen any wing better on offense within 5-6 feet of the basket.
I think that last part is possibly where Hopkins comes in because he’s also a relentless player around the glass and difficult to stop in short range. You land a guy like Hopkins for one year and it’s more than a solid replacement. I too wanted to see RJ cap a great career here and come back but nothing we can do about it.

Lots of speculation on what impact sitting last 5 or so minutes will have. Makes sense that if he leaves for 2 million, it's about the money. If he leaves for similar money SJU would pay, then it's about the benching. I don't see him on draft boards with the exception of late 2nd round. While not impossible, making more in the NBA than in college next season seems unlikely. As far as staying, CRP comes across as one coach who will never act desperate to get or keep a player.

Oof... I said yesterday that once players enter the Portal I think Pitino loses interest, and that line makes me think he won't be returning.
Or could have lost interest when RJ did his antics on the big stage.

Rick would get killed saying he should go in the portal, so he's saying he should go to the nba.

I'd be the same way as Rick. I want team first players.

RJ is an excellent college player who earned himself great opportunity. He is also a terrific teammate and all-around good kid.

Right now, because of where he is and the dynamics of the portal & NIL, timing for a SJU/RJ reunion doesn't line-up. I wish him well and know he will always remember the games at MSG fondly.

Just don't go to UConn!

Apples and oranges Harrison didn't have a portal option nor NIL in the millions of dollars. Snowflake reference uncalled for.
