I remember when the Daily News wrote that Lee Green had just committed to St. John’s! Fans were so pleased!!
And grateful for Lee’s effort.
RIP Lee and
Blessings to your family in this time of sadness and loss.

And, both of those guys played early in their careers with Malik Sealy, who is also gone.

Suddenly, there was an opportunity tonight for Green, a junior guard who began the night having played 25 more minutes than he did all last season. "I never really knew until we got to the locker room," Green said, "and they said Derek would be out and I'd be with the first unit."

On the outside, Green just went about his normal pre-game routine. On the inside. . . .

"I was pumped," he said, smiling. "I found a couple of extra inches on my vertical."

Green reached career highs in points (10), minutes (31), rebounds (3) and assists (3). After a rocky first two minutes, in which the Redmen committed five turnovers on their first five possessions, Green worked smoothly with senior guard David Cain, who had 13 points, 4 assists, 1 turnover, 6 rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal.

I remember in one of the big-name all star games back then -- maybe the Dapper Dan Classic -- Green hit his head on the rim. The announcer was stunned that he got up that high.

Those two guys were huge late 80s, early 90s NYC players.
Lee Green, what a loss. Dude was one of the most athletic SJU players of all time.

That list brings back a lot of memories. It doesn’t seem that long ago. RIP Lee

I clearly remember both players (of course, Green being he played for the Johnnies), and recall Edwards being somewhat of a "hot dog/showboat" type. He didn't quite mesh with John Thompson (I think Edwards also wasn't fond of going to class, either) and left Georgetown after his freshman season.

Lee Green was a power guard and came in with high accolades. This is really wild and sad news.

I wonder if both Green and Edwards had underlying health issues. Regardless, terrible news! Condolences to both of their families.

Damn!!! I have fond memories of watching Lee play for my first time with a loaded Riverside Church Team (Adrian Autry, Brian Reese, Shawnelle Scott, Anthony Pelle, Mossy Cade, Larry Pollard). I was estatic he picked St. John's. A good guy over his career here who I know remained very close with Lamont. So so sorry to hear this, Rest in Peace Lee my prayers with are with your family.

Dave Edwards went to Andrew Jackson in Queens and always played with a smile on his face. He was a late pick-up by Georgetown and wound up starting. As mentioned, he left after one year. RIP.

Green was a really nice guy. Always smiling. Very affable. And he was a lock down defender. He loved playing defense.
