Spent a large part of his life in chronic torturous pain especially his back. RIP big fella you were one of the greats.Sorry to hear this. May He rest in peace.
Had chance to meet him last April. He was keynote speaker at an industry conference. He was phenomenal.
He was in pain at that point and could barely get up the 4 or 5 steps to the stage. He paced stage for an hour straight. He noted that he had to keep moving constantly to minimize it.
He’s been fighting it I want to say over year. It went bad over a month ago. 2 stories stick out about Bill for me. One was seeing him play piano at his house which was a shrine to the GD. The other was him coming to my cousins basketball camp to speak then going out for lunch with him my cousin and Bill’s friend Gregg.Who was impressed by all the drills ran. I’m 22 years old at the time wasn’t the biggest music fan. Well Gregg was Gregg Allman.I didn't know he was sick. Very sad. Great player. Fascinating person. RIP.
He's got me in age by a few months. Remembering his UCLA days fondly, he was as, or more, dominant, than Lew A (Kareem) in college, but obviously not in the pros.
His game was as outstanding as his commentary was fun. If the game was bad, or got out of hand, his stories would go on and on and veer off in all sorts of directions. His stories were, like him, legendary. He was always better with a play-by-play man with a good sense of humor.
I wish he was healthy throughout his entire career, he'd be in the conversation of maybe Top-5 or 10 of the All Time Greats. Great defender, rebounder, fundamentally sound, good passer with a great outlet and terrific court vision and a very good shooter. A taller Larry Bird.
I liked that he loved Looie and Mully and seemed to like St. John's as an East Coast school for a definitely West Coast guy.
May he rest in Peace as I did not know he was long time battling cancer.
I think him, Jerry Garcia, John Prine and Jimmy Buffett are all toking Upstairs on a big 'ol doobie.
With all four of them in the best of health... . .
