Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

Pitino should be the highest paid coach in college basketball. The progress of where we were and where we are now, in this short period of time, is incredible.

STJ should pay up and not play around. Both for Rick, but also advertising to future HC targets that we’re a serious program who doesn’t nickel and dime anymore

Strongly sense Rick wants to finish his illustrious career here w his love of Big Apple and all the connections and social opportunities available to him.

Fathers Shanley, also in the latter stage of his career, will imo find a compensation sweet spot to make all parties happy. These two talented change agents will ride off into the sunset together after accomplishing great things in the coming years.

I agree. But the optics of this being drawn out will hurt us in the future. Just get this done

Administration agrees w you.
The mere fact that this has gone public may indicate some headwinds.

Much different scenario but after Villanova won 1st championship under Wright, school tore up old contract and gave him a new one. No public disclosure of a negotiation underway, just the announcement of a new contract.

Whatever happens likely will be Rick's last big payday. Has to figure into his mindset.

I am no Pitinophile but for St, John’s to play ANY games regarding an extension is stupid.
If his agent approached them with an offer, negotiate, period. I don’t know any of the details but if they deferred discussions they are unnecessarily playing with fire.

If I do recall Pitino joked at how SJU friendly his contract is 4 million per and I believe he gave us a break on this one knowing we had to pay Mike Anderson 10 million or whatever. They will pay him a fair figure, im not worried about that, health and retirement totally different conversations!

Get ready for another reseating and ticket price bump. If they pay we pay. 😉

Would love to see the ratio of dollar per coach’s compensation to dollar per revenue generated by the bball program for our most recent HCs.

Do you think Rick wins that battle?

Letting Rick leave is simply not an option. So St John's will have to pay whatever it takes. If that means slightly above what Hurley is making (which should feed Rick's ego) then you do it. You cannot put a price tag on what he has done for this program in a short time.

Thankfully, with Shanley here, who Pitino also loves, I'm confident it will get done.

I guess not a popular opinion here based on replies/likes from the last page (372), but Pitino should not be paid the same (or higher) than Hurley. Yeah I get the argument that Pitino had a tougher challenge than Hurley in resurrecting our program, but their FMVs aren't close. Hurley is the most sought-after coach in all of basketball. Pitino is 73, Hurley is 52. Pitino has 2 NCAAT championships in the last 3 decades, Hurley has 2 in the last 3 years.

Hurley last year turned down a 6 year, $70 million contract with the LA Lakers, he can and should demand the most in the BE. That isn't to say what Pitino has done for St. John's isn't incredible, it is, but he's not getting the kind of offers Hurley is so the school shouldn't overpay.

Pitino does deserve to be one of the top 2-3 highest paid coaches in the BE, though. #6 is way too low. Would be great if they can negotiate something before the season starts.

The only point I was trying to make was that if that's the salary that it would take to retain Pitino (above Hurley), then St Johns has no choice but to do it.

How quickly we forgot this program has been in the dumpster for 2+ decades and he immediately resurrected it. Once he leaves there is no guarantee the show will keep going. So need to make this work as long as possible.
