Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

St. John’s says it is determined to make this Rick Pitino’s last job.

President Father Brian Shanley and athletic director Ed Kull both said they anticipate needing to rework the Hall of Fame coach’s contract to ensure that happens. “From my perspective, we’re going to do anything and everything it takes to keep Rick Pitino here,” Kull said during a groundbreaking ceremony for a new basketball facility Saturday. “Whatever it takes, you have my word, we’re keeping Rick Pitino here.

“We are committed to Rick Pitino ending his career here. At the end of the day, it’s his terms, his timeline, but we are fully committed that this is his last stop.”

“Based on his success, I know the price is going to go up, and I think we’re going to be able to get the resources to get to where we need to go,” Shanley said. “I’ll do everything I can to keep Rick happy. I don’t want to lose Rick, because I think he’s the best coach in college basketball.

“We’re going to be successful this year, and when this season’s over, we’ll sit down with Rick like we do every year, and we’ll say: Let’s talk about going forward. What is it going to take to keep you happy and keep you here?”

This was an ominous article to me.

Couldn't hammer out a new deal yet?

Also who was the Power 5 school I wonder.

Yeah, this quote was a bit disturbing. But it could just be hardball tactics by the agent at this point.

“We approached them and tried to negotiate what we thought would be a very fair deal and it didn’t go anywhere,” his agent, Evan Daniels, told The Post. “We believe with what he’s accomplished, he should be paid among the top coaches in the country and certainly among his peers atop the Big East.

Article also says Pitino's salary is sixth in the BE... not high enough and they'll need to change the terms by end of the season or there's a real chance he'd leave IMO. Don't think the school would let it get to that point, though.

He’s not leaving for another school. That’s just not practical given his age and that it will take 2-3 years to win at a new school. His leverage is retiring.

He loves it here. I’d be terrified if he was 40 and raising kids, but he’s not. There is no better place for him.

I don't think he will either, but if he repeats the success he had last year and his contract isn't renegotiated, then his ego will feel disrespected and he could go somewhere paying double. Again, very doubtful it'd ever come to that, but I don't think the school can continue paying him at the current level for much longer.

Interesting that Evan Daniels his agent. Im sure Daniels good and can see him repping younger athletes as that was his recruiting background. Figured, a guy like Pitino would have a high powered lawyer as agent.

Im sure they'll get a deal done.

Does he deserve what Hurley is being paid? No. Does he deserve what Ed Cooley is being paid? Yes. Going to guess things will shake out along those lines, as long as we make it to the Tourney this season and get past the first weekend.

Why doesn’t he deserve what Hurley is being paid? What he’s done for our program is nothing short of miraculous. I’m not sure there’s another coach in the universe who could have done for us what Pitino has and that includes Hurley.

At UConn Hurley has delivered sustained championship-caliber performance, year after year. Pitino did that in his previous roles, he has yet to do it here. That’s why, plain and simple.

I hear you but Pitino has literally resurrected the dead at SJU and turned us into the talk of the town. It’s more than just results on the court. We are not far removed from a time when multiple mediocre coaches were spurning the job because it was so bad. We hadn’t won a tournament game in 25 years and the SJU brand was in the toilet. And now we are “cool.”

Let’s see what happens this year, but assuming we have a successful campaign, I would argue that what Pitino has done at SJU is comparable to what Hurley has done at UConn (obviously not in the “on the court results” but rather, considering the level of difficulty, what has been accomplished for the brand and the program).

Pitino should be the highest paid coach in college basketball. The progress of where we were and where we are now, in this short period of time, is incredible.

STJ should pay up and not play around. Both for Rick, but also advertising to future HC targets that we’re a serious program who doesn’t nickel and dime anymore

Unsettling that this comes out the day we break ground on practice facility, and about to play our first game. I guess perhaps the initial success of the Hearts on Fire campaign figures in.

Public disclosure also throws red(storm) meat to any schools (and their donor bases) needing 6 months to plan to target Pitino come April and desperate to climb to a national championship. The offers may be 4 years, skies the limit and that possibility has to impact St Johns.

This turnaround has been meteoric, startling, and beyond reasonable expectations without any question whatsoever. At the same time, we still haven't won a meaningful NCAA tourney game against a competitive opponent in 25 years.

Just when you have to pinch yourself, you do, and it hurts like hell.

Yes, Shanley & co intent is to do whatever reasonable to retain Rick.

In the end it may come down to how much he wants to stay here considering that someone could make him an offer he couldn't refuse. In a nutshell, that's his best leverage for St. John's to offer as much as they can. What he would accept is anyone's guess and I suspect he will hold his cards close.
