Radio?

You know what bothers me? You not paying for FF. ;) Just a reminder since I know you don't read the portal or emails.

Yeah, I no longer read the email that I used for CBS Fantasy Football. Best way to get me is probably DM on this site. In any event, I just sent payment. Thanks!

From the PR on the Merrimack game:

An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Brandon Tierney will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app.
St. John’s did what many other schools have also done: assigned its medial rights to Learfield Communications; Learfield in turn markets the radio and advertising.

An ACC school with which I am familiar has done the same thing. in the case of the ACC school, it’s most prominent N$L group has to pay full price, without any discount to Learfield to be listed inside the playing arena.

I wrote to Mike Cragg in 2019 about the terrible radio reception from 570 and 970 AM that I had living only 25 miles from Manhattan, so frankly, I don't think it's a big deal that we are no longer on those platforms. Their listening audience had to be very limited. The bigger problem is that Rutgers is on WFAN and WCBS, two powerful NYC stations with probably a 400 mile reach and we are nowhere on the radio dial. That is unacceptable. As was said earlier, you can't stream the game if you're in the car. We are rarely if ever on Sirius radio.

Bottom line, the SJU administration needs to backup the claim that we are New York's Team by getting on a strong NYC radio station; e.g. 710 AM, 770 AM...

In other words, if I am understanding this, when I am driving in my car I cannot just turn the game on the radio? Maybe I am too old school, but I am not inclined to start surfing through my phone browser to find one of these platforms. At that point, I'll just drive faster to get to the TV.

This is a prime example of a 2nd class mentality. If you are "New York's Team" and setting goals related to national relevance, then get on the damn radio.

Sorry.....this one strikes a cord with me.

Don't be sorry. This situation is pathetic and should be rectified immediately.

Streaming is the way of life now. AM radio signal is atrocious and is a dying medium, whether you want to believe it or not. If you want to listen to the radio broadcast you can do it via an app on your phone and bluetooth it into your car which is a pretty standard feature on any car these days and has been for years, as well as on Sirius XM.

You're right but the unfortunate situation is the majority of the St John's fans are old men. Not an insult just the way it is. So they're going to be less inclined to stream than the younger generation.

I get it. I really do, but adapting to the times simply has to happen, from the business side of things by SJU, and by the fans, no matter the age. It's just the harsh truth.

If there was money to be made in radio I'm sure SJU would be more aggressive at getting on. But I bet there's not.

So I assume that every other major college basketball program, incuding Rutgers and Seton Hall in our backyard, simply haven't adjusted to the new economic reality that radio is unimportant? I live in the DC area, and we get Georgetown, Maryland, Virginia and Virginia tech games on the radio. Who knew what dopes those schools were. Don't they know radio is a dying medium?

And here I thought that making your product available to as many consumers as possible was a good thing. Silly me...

As mentioned previously, Rutgers just signed a contract with WFAN and WCBS 880.

The harsh reality is there is simply no demand for St John's basketball right now. This program has been irrelevant for over 2 decades. Seton Hall at least has the benefit of recent success and there being no major sports teams in NJ. Living in NYC and walking around I've spotted more people wearing UConn gear than I have St John's gear. They can barely even sell enough tickets to make the Garden realistic for the program anymore. What does all of this tell you?

The Giants & Jets are in NJ!

Can the stream be accessed on a Sirius XM channel? That would work for me.

I get your point, but there is something to be said about turning on the car and hitting a preset to quickly get to the game.

Admittedly, I am already cranky about the absurd decline in the television experience which has become a tiresome exercise in jumping from source to source (HDMI to HDMI) and not being able to "flip" channels without doing so. Greed has ruined TV.

So the answer to these issues is to make our games less available to our fans? It simply makes no sense. If you are trying to sell a product, you don't make the product less available - you make it more available.

Ok but I'm sure it costs money to even get us on a quality radio station. So why spend money if there is no demand for the product? Or maybe they tried and were shot down? Quite frankly the school needs to attract younger fans and as pointed out in this thread, those aren't the ones listening on radio.

Thanks to my astute Red.fans brethren I knowingly streamed the Minko postgame via the St. John's app (same as e-ticket). The app is actually very well done, it lessened my grip driving through the monsoon on the Grand Central after last night's game. Would still like a more accessible stream to bring awareness to non-fans but this is where we are in modern media.
