R.i.p. Jo Jo White
hi, I saw many games that year.
loved warren, I remember being at his first game. I believe it was gtown.
sonny dove was great. a 6'8" power forward when teams had 6'5" centers.
in those days, you saw a player dunk maybe once every 5 games.
sonny had, it seemed, at least one a game.
On subject of Jo Jo White, he seemed to be one of the great pure shooters in the game. If he was open from under 20 feet, it seemed you pencil in 2 points.

I only saw Sonny Dove play around 1972-3, playing in the Brooklyn/Queens unlimited CYO division. He was out of shape, and actually some idiots in my parish were harrassing him because he was playing so badly. I think Mel Utley actually played in the same division for St. Mary Star of the Sea in Far Rockaway.

And from 1967-68 (Sonny was gone by then) through 1975-76 there was the no-dunk rule -- which was sometimes referred to as the Lew Alcindor rule.
If memory serves me right , jo Jo White ( Kansas ?) came into Alumni Hall to play SJU . They were a highly ranked team and got blown out by the Redmen . Albie Schwartz put the clamps on Jo Jo .
I was at Alumni when Kansas with Walt Wesley came in and beat STJ. I think Jojo was on that team but not sure. I think same year that Miami with Rick Barry lost at Alumni.

Ah, Walt Wesley. Now you're really cleaning out the cobwebs in my memory, fuchsia. :)

I was at the rick barry game.
I believe SJU was down double digits at the half & SJU won by one.

About 10 years ago I got to chat with Walt in Fort Myers, Fl. He was running a youth program in high crime area in town. He was a very nice guy & of course I was bending his ear about hoops.

SJU beat Miami by a basket and Barry set the CA scoring record somewhere in the high thirties. Looie has always said he was the best player he ever coached while at the Nets.

If i recall though, Barry didn't think much of Looie as a coach

Didn't Lou think Rick was not worthy of a scholarship at St. John's?
