R.I.P. Beaver Smith

In that Ind game with less than a minute to go Alegia got to the rim for a highly contested shot and the ball rolled off the rim forcing SJU to foul. If the ball went in it either would have tied the game or given SJU a one point lead. I can't remember.
That Ind team is considered one of the greatest teams of all time and that was probably their closest game of the year. In an NCAA tournament game later that year they rolled over SJU.

I seem to remember john farmer missing a chippie very late that woukd have put us ahead but that was a long time ago.

I recall that when the outcome was no longer in doubt, the Garden rose up to give the Redmen a thunderous ovation that seemed to go on for a long time. Proudest moment ever in defeat. For 40 minutes our guys had gone toe to toe with one of the best college teams of all time and nearly dealt them what would have been their only loss of the season.

George Johnson, who for my money was as good as any forward who ever played here, completely outplayed Kent Benson, sending Benson to the bench on fouls early in the 1st half.

Scott May was one of the very best college players I had ever seen.

Beaver, though, was ours.

I was the poster who resurrected his name just a few weeks ago when the thread topic was Greatest leapers.

Also attended this game, my favorite game of all time that the team lost. The atmosphere at MSG was electric. I had seen some SJU games before this but this is the game that cemented me as a fan. RIP Beaver Smith.[/quote]

I was there as well. Sat up in Blue Heaven in the next to the last row. I remember my father thought my friends and I were nuts for going to the Garden since, I believe, IU smoked Manhattan by 40 the night before.[/quote]

I was at game also sat with the great Jim O’Connell SID at St John’s at the time who predicted a blowout but obviously was pleasantly surprised
Beaver played well and will always be remembered Spoke with him often when he worked at St John’s RIP
