ST. JOHN’S vs. UCONN
When: Wednesday, 8:30 p.m.
Where: Gampel Pavilion
Records: St. John’s 9-4 (1-1 Big East), UConn 10-4 (1-2 Big East)
TV: FS1
Radio: UConn Sports Network, 97.9 FM-ESPN Hartford, Sirius-137, XM-206, SXM App-965, WAVZ-New Haven (1300 AM), WGCH- Greenwich (1490 AM), WATR-Waterbury (1320 AM), WILI-Willimantic (WILI 1400 AM)

KEEP AN EYE ON

No more gaffes: It’s been a tough season for Jalen Gaffney. The junior guard was expected to be a key piece off the bench, backing up R.J. Cole at the point, or maybe even starting at shooting guard. Instead, he’s shooting just 36.6% from the floor and turning the ball over too much. He’s played just a combined 17 minutes the Huskies’ past two games.

“It’s an important time for him to step up and step forward and play better,” coach Dan Hurley said. “I wouldn’t have imagined, going into the year, that he’d be playing 8 or 9 minutes a game here. I would have imagined a much bigger role, based on where we hoped things would be. But, just like this team, he still has the chance to accomplish everything he wants to accomplish. We have so many games left, 17 league games left. So, he can still have the type of year that he wants. But he’s got to do it now.”

40 minutes of hell?: Under second-year coach Mike Anderson, St. John’s likes to ramp up the pressure defense, cause havoc with steals and turnovers, and overall kick up the pace.

“It is a concern,” Hurley said. “We don’t have a ton of handlers, we don’t have a ton of guards that can go by you when the other team is aggressive in passing lanes and trapping. They take you out of a lot of things you’re trying to run, so now you’re in a situation where we have to be sharp with passing and cutting, and just kind of playing basketball.”

That said, although UConn is about middle of the pack in pace-of-play nationally, Hurley is expecting this one to be a “really, really fun game.”

“I think our guys are gonna be excited about a game that’s gonna be pretty open, and a real players’ game,” he said.

Stamford Stormer: After spending the past four years at Purdue, Stamford’s Aaron Wheeler is now a grad student for the Red Storm. The 6-foot-9 forward is averaging 5.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per game off the bench while shooting 49 percent from the floor. Wheeler, who began his prep career at Trinity Catholic and ended it with a season at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire, matched a career-high with 15 points in the Johnnies’ loss on Saturday at Providence.

Icing Champagnie, Posh: St. John’s junior forward Julian Champagnie is second in the Big East in scoring at 20.7 points per game and “is an NBA player,” Hurley said. Posh Alexander, the league’s reigning co-Defensive Player of the Year along with UConn’s Isaiah Whaley, is sixth in the Big East in scoring at a 15.8 ppg clip.

“I think you go into the game knowing that you’ve got to do a great job on Champagnie and Posh,” said Hurley, “and it starts there.”

PROBABLE STARTERS

ST. JOHN’S
Player Pos. PPG
Posh Alexander G 15.8
Julian Champagnie F 20.7
Dylan Addae-Wusu G 10.3
Montez Mathis G 9.7

UCONN
Player Pos PPG
R.J. Cole G 16.2
Tyrese Martin G/F 14.3
Akok Akok F 4.9
Adama Sanogo C 14.9
Andre Jackson G/F 7.4

We are playing 4 against 5?

Tyrese Martin, Andre Jackson, Akok Akok,  These 3 players are going to kill us.  I dont think we match up well at all with these 3 players.  This Uconn team is way more talented and deeper then us.

I have a feeling this is going to be an assbeat and the 11.5 spread is right on target.

Over the years the Johnnies have had a way coming off a desultory loss to next get a big win that nobody expected. Don't get me wrong this is a tough road game and a tough opponent and they could get blown out.

But like Delaware said, let's steal a road game and make up for Pitt, and even up our record in the BE.

Go, get 'em boys!

I guess that explains the point spread.

I think you have correctly identified the matchups that could be difference-makers in the game, particularly Martin.  We do have players who should be able to compete with those guys defensively, we shall see if they do.

Sounds like a good wager Monte, especially with Xavier at home. Although I generally root for Nova when they're not playing the Johnnies, I'll root for Xavier tonight lol.

I agree Duke. I was going to do a 6pt teaser with SJU getting 17.5 and I still don’t trust it. We could lose this game by 20.

Thanks NCJ. We'll know for sure by about 10:00PM whether or not it was a good bet lol

This is a bad matchup for us. It’s even worse watching the guy we should’ve hired coaching the other team…

No way,it will be a double digit loss unless we have a super game.Hope we do better on the foul line and rebounding.
Perhaps we can have a great  shooting game.  If we could play them tough and stay within 10 it will be an accomplishment
Do not see Soriano getting much mins, his slow  a foot will be a big neg . See him accumulating fouls early  He is 6-11 he has to be aggressive in the paint, needs to stay close to the rim and take those baby hooks
if they call pull off a win here it will turn our season around and give us respect

I'm at the borgata got SJU at 5 to 1 odds to Win for $500....

Really need this one but I'm not holding my breath. I know some are saying "this is the type of game we're not expected to win so we'll probably win", but people also said that about all of our other Q1 games this season (Indiana, Kansas & Providence). The majority of our huge wins going back to Lavin came when nobody expected us to win (Syracuse 3X, #1 Nova, #4 Duke, #16 Arizona, WVU, #24 UConn last year, etc.), but given our pre-season expectations we are no longer being overlooked and teams are better motivated. UConn will win easily I think, and our Q1 wins probably won't come until it's too late.

Really tough to compete when they're bringing in top 25 classes and we're bringing in top 60 classes.

Who knows? Maybe something showed up on whatever physical exams he had to take to get cleared to return. Let's just hope he is ok and recovers soon.

What does that even mean?  Always drama.

At this point redshirt the kid.  Hes missed a ton of time already.
Can't redshirt if you play even one second in any game during the season.
