Very interesting quote from Marvin in this article:
We have more talent, but talent doesn’t go out and win you games,” Clark said. “The mindset that [Butler] takes and the approach they take to every game is what wins you games. Butler is a well-coached team. They’re gonna play hard and do whatever they have to do to win. That’s what has been instilled into them.”

Seems like he feels those last 3 sentences are what allowed Butler to beat a more talented St. John's team.[/quote]

Coach, it's about leading your team by getting fired up and motivating your players
Show some emotion and psych your guys up to play their best
Talent is important, for sure, but desire and effort are equally important
As a former coach, I know that it all starts from the top!!

Very hard to teach desire and effort. Much of this needs to come from inside the player. I would say maybe we need to do a better job of recruiting kids that have the desire and effort from the get go.

I have a lot of complaints about Mullin, but he shouldn't have to instill playing hard in his players. Maybe Clark, Simon, and Keita should watch the tape of Josh Roberts on Saturday. Sure, there were times he looked like a deer in the headlights. But the kid was busting it out there. It doesn't take a whole lot of skill to play with energy and intensity.

Unacceptable excuses tonight;

Weather limited crowd
Heron not himself
Late start
Refs sucked
Berry bobble head distraction

If you want it, get it. How much motivation do you need?

Talent wise, they are a better team than Butler. If they play hard for 40 minutes, they'll win this game. Simple as that.

Talent wise, we may be the best team in the conference
But, unfortunately, our record doesn't reflect that
Takes more than sheer talent to win
It's about time that our team figures that out

1. We are entitled
2. Our fans suck
3. Just accept failure
4. Root for Duke if you want to be over .500 some years
5. We are negative
6. Lavin left Mullin with nothing
7. It's all on the players
8. Mullin has improved the win total still each year
9. What coach could do better than Mullin?
10. Heron was coming off an injury

Hopefully none of those either!

Most important thing for tonight, is to make shots early. That seems to lift our spirits all around, and everything we do in general is built off of making shots.

See, in the three bad losses, I don't think we came out tentative (despite what the coaches and players said - that was just coachspeak, IMO). I think we were cold early, fell behind, and that's what lead to a letdown.

Pretty much every team looks a lot more impressive when shots are going in, but it's extra important for us, that this be the case.

I feel like we have shot in the 20's or mid to low 30's from 3 the last several games. They're due to fall one day again.

In past three games, from beyond the arc:

Marvin Clark II is 3/17;
Shamorie Ponds is 1/9;
LJ Figueroa is 2/12.

16%...ouch.

Clark shooting 36 percent from three this season. But he is shooting 46 percent from 3 at games played at CA. Also if you remove the DePaul game where he was cold + forced extra shots with Shamorie out, he is shooting a clean 50% from three in CA games. Maybe he prefers the on campus arena? Cause he has been ice cold at our other home arena MSG, shooting 3/14 from 3. Hopefully he brings it tonight

The comments by Mullin and Clark regarding ‘The need to have energy, go full out, and be hungry to win to go with the team’s talent ‘ are disturbing.
It’s obvious we’ve lacked that in key games this year but what the hell?
Isn’t part of coaching motivating your players to bust it from the get-go, by inspiration and holding the PT hammer over their heads?
Damn, play the walk-one if they’ll give 100%.
I’d rather lose by lack of talent than lack of effort.
Anyway, let’s bring it tonight,, but this is disturbing.

I refuse to believe that even the most dedicated fan base has more heart and desire than a college team’s coach and/or players. No way!! Go get ‘em guys!!!

The real ouch is that these are our best 3 point shooters.

Very rare chance of walk - ons seeing significant minutes. This is about winning. Even the scholarship players at 50% effort give the team a better chance of winning. I know it is frustrating but this is it.
