Kamar Baldwin has shot 21-for-22 (95%) from the FT line this year. He made 85% of his freebies last year, so it's no fluke. Just something to keep in mind late in a close game. At that point, denying him the ball should be our play.
4 of Butler’s 5 starters are in the top 20 in the Big East in minutes played. Making those guys work extremely hard at both ends by utilizing our depth is imperative. Pressure them, tire them out, make them work with a shorter shot clock. We also gotta continue to rebound the hell out of the ball at both ends. They aren’t a high scoring team for the most part. I’d love it if we have a raucous crowd which can only help us as well. Very excited for this game. I don’t think we will be as easily out-coached by Butler as we have in the past. It’s gonna be a fun game. Likely a dog fight til the end, although I’d prefer to run up a big lead in the first half like against Arizona because I don’t think Butler would be able to claw back as quickly.

The thing that jumps out of me with that stat is that he’s only gone to the line 22 times this year. That’s surprising.
I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble, but beating Butler (which I think we will) does not guarantee us getting ranked in the AP poll. We're playing at Xavier the day before the poll will be released on Monday.
I remember taking my mom to her first SJU game at Carnesecca when we played 13th ranked Butler 3 years ago. We were down 10 for most of the game until a final late push led by Ponds and Lovett sealed our win. Hopefully New Year's Eve will produce the same result.
Love the optimism but Butler has the resume thus far of a top 10 team. This will be a very tough opening fixture and I suspect we will be atleast 3.5-4.5 point underdogs at home.

I get that it is a good thing, but being ranked now is pretty irrelevant. One game at a time. If we can break even in the conference I will take our chances with getting in the tournament, which is the only “ranking” that matters. We are a long, long way from that but it is a nice carrot out there.
There are obviously a lot of variables that will determine our success in Big East play. One thing I think would be extremely helpful is getting consistent first/second team All Big East play from Heron and Figueroa. It’s astounding that the team has played as well as it has without their two studs playing like studs in most games this year. If those two can get going, it would really help.
You have a point . If you would have said before the season started that we would beat Arizona w/o Heron playing, we would have called you crazy.

In addition, as we did with Albany (while not at the level of Butler but similar in style), we must play full 30 seconds on defense and either make them face a last second bad shot or get them into 30 second violation turnover. Make them have to "run" back on defense as we advance every ball at top speed. These are SJU strengths this year--play to strength.

I have watched Butler this year. Was not impressed at all. I believe they are highly overrated.

They're one shot away from being the top ranked team in the country. We can beat them but let’s not act like we wouldn’t be singing their praises if we had their resume.

Their record is not much different than ours. We are also one shot away from their record and we have 2 top 25 wins, they have 1 vs Baylor. They faced some better quality overall but not groundbreaking talent. We beat vermont and we’d have the same record within some real good quality wins and our only loss to a P5 conference team.

I know it doesnt matter, but I truely believe if we faced VT or AZ St today we would beat both of them.
butler is in for a dogfight. Carnesseca will be rockin NYE! I am flying in tonight. So pumped!

We were beating ASU early. We had a bad half and ended up getting beat. Growing pains and I agree we’d beat both today.

Kill me if you want for saying this but it's how i see it.
Heron has been avg at best. That could change in B.E. play, but as of right now he has been avg.
Hoping he turns into a star real soon.

Agreed. After his play in the play in game last year and his play this year against good teams, I think we know what we have in Heron. A good player but not a superstar in the big east.
The good news is that we have proved we dont need him to win. Hes a nice piece but if he is having an off night, no big deal. We can still get it done.
I think every conference game will be very competitive, and I have no idea how it will all end up. Raising ticket prices was less than inspired move, but this team and this conference are worth watching.
