Not expecting a win tomorrow, especially given the west coast site and Heron almost certainly not playing. 10-3 OOC record would be as good or better than I expected. Just hoping for a competitive game. Hopefully the ten days between tomorrow's game and BE opener will give Mustapha time to fully recover and the rest of the team a nice rest before a big home game against Butler.

I predict the line will be +9.5. Arizona is #14 in both NET and KenPom. Looking at their resume, especially their last few games, I don't think they're quite that good. Probably more around #25. Regardless, this will be an extremely tough game. Have to be happy that we're playing with house money. Losing this one by 10+ wouldn't hurt us. Just enjoy the game and hope we can pull off another Top 25 upset (yes, it's awesome seeing WVU in the Top 25 :)).
The pg is a freshman, i say be physical with the kid, and bangnhim around a bit.
See if he can handle a physical game.
Think Tom is on to something here. I'd tell Rutherford, Dunn and Williams Jr to really get physical with Mannion and not worry too much about fouling out. Trust Anderson to game manage their fouls. If the refs are calling things tight or seem to be favoring Mannion because he's a national name then can always change strategy in game. Mannion is fast and plays with a flair. As much as we like an up and down game, I think it works in our favor to make this game ugly rather than let him get in a groove and start gaining confidence like he's one of the Showtime Lakers.

Also regarding Mannion...
He's a tough cover because he's fast and penetrates but you can't leave him open because he's a decent shooter (38% from 3 but that includes a terrible 1-10 in his last game against Gonzaga) You can't cheat with him. You just have to play very, tough honest defense and hope our guys are in shape enough to stay with him. This is where having Justin Simon would be really nice...
When he penetrates, it's really, important that our guys don't collapse and help unless the primary defender is obviously beat. He's really good at drawing other defenders and then giving the ball up to an open man around the rim for an easy basket. On that note when he penetrates our guys cannot watch. If you turn your back on your guy to watch the play when Mannion is in the lane, Arizona bigs are well coached to go to the hoop and their shooters (Smith, Baker Jr, Hazzard) know to drift out to the 3pt line because Mannion will get the ball to them. Keep your eyes on your defensive assignment even if they seem out of the play.
So let the refs ca it tight, we got walk ons, we got sears, i put them in, and te them to abuse him, he drives to the basket, you better send him on his ass if you want to see the court again.
I loved seeing starks in the playoffs.fouling mj hard and seeing a knot on his head.
Lets mannion know, you're not playing that hot shot crap with us.

Can anyone see Anderson switching up the starting lineup for tomorrow? The way Albany played off Rutherford concerned me as it showed teams are not respecting his jump shot. Coach mike seemed to pull him pretty quick for Dunn when he noticed this.

With AZ size, I'm wondering if we counter with giving the Duke of Earlington the nod tomorrow. I think our best lineup for tomorrow 1-5 would be:

1- Dunn
2- LJ
3- Penny
4- Duke
5- Roberts

They is our best size/rebounding lineup which I think will be important for tom night.

Playing with house money tomorrow IMO

I view this game as part of the preparation process for this season. Let's see how well we play and we'll know if we will be dancing this season.

I would assume so as he is not physically unable to travel.
If there isn't a chance he could play you would not have him make the trip.......... He would stay home and get rehab 24-7 so he is able to play against Butler.
The trainer is with the team and he can do some, of the rehab exercises on the train and on the road. If they need a pool, Linfonte has numerous contacts and he can find a facility.

I've watched them a decent amount and I've gotta say I'm not really concerned with their size. They have two very tall guys in Nnaji and Jeter but those are really the only two bigs who see any significant playing time. They also have a guy off the bench in Ira Lee who is a rugged PF type but he only plays like 10-15 mins maybe. We are by far the better rebounding team and by far the better team when it comes to rim protection. Their bigs aren't shot blockers or exceptionally good rebounders.

If we lose it's because of their offense. They shoot 50% from the field as a team. They shoot 75% from the line as a team (although most of the starters are better than that besides Jeter who drags them down) They must shoot somewhere close to 40% from 3 as a team. If we win it will probably be because our defense was stellar and brought those #'s down or caused them to turn the ball over more than usual.

The caveat to all this is even if our D is very good we still have to shoot a reasonable FG%. They're not West Virginia. We can't shoot 1-18 from 3 and 30% from the field. We just can't. But again I think if that happens it would have more to do with our own struggles than their bigs impacting our shots.

I feel like Coach Mike has really gotten the heart/toughness message across to this team. We have quite a few lunchpail guys compared to AZ flashy/high maintenance guys.

Who wants this game more? Whos got the bigger heart?

I think we do.

We need to own the boards at both ends for the entire game, period. Zona will make shots. Own the boards like against WVU and make them earn every basket. We have plenty of depth to go the distance so that shouldn’t be a factor. We have Steere back which is another big with 5 fouls. I’m not sure Heron will be, so Im expecting him not to play, but he very well might be in better shape than we think. I don’t know if Mike Anderson gives the status away freely either.

They aren’t as physical as us. We need to use that and make them take bad shots, then own the boards.

Damn Steere is athletic for a guy his size. The video is a little tease but he can get up and down the court and leap. Can’t wait for him to get up to speed.

.... and the feckless NCAA turned a blind eye to UArizona
https://www.washingtonpost.com...grams-implicated-in-college-basketball-probe/

...... but in 2017 the self righteous NCAA beat up Cal Poly San Luis Obispo placing Cal Poly on 2 years probation when the school while acting in good faith mistakenly provided 72 student athletes with excessive book allowances total;omg $16,180 which sum ranged from $5 to $734 per athlete. The school mistakenly believed that each athlete was entitle to $800 rather than actual cost not to exceed $800.

The NCAA is a joke.

I'm sure the team doesn't see it that way.

If there was ever a game to truly go 40 damn minutes of hell, it's this one, they're flashy, and lead the country in assists.
They re the flashy boys and suppose to beat us anyway, so what's to lose?

Lets truly go 40 minutes of hell like Nolans team, and see hat happens.

I got a fever. And the only perscription is more Earlington.

We need big minutes from the Duke tomorrow night. Id like to see him out there 25-30 minutes. Hes a rebounding machine.

Steere runs like a Deere.

I was wondering where they were going to be.

A lot of Cal's out of town opponents stay at the hotel up the block from me. I was hoping to see them at the farmers market or at the Warriors' practice facility in Downtown Oakland if they weren't splurging on a hotel in San Francisco.
