Posts That Exited the SJU Portal Thred

St. John's has a history of "missed opportunities".
The first of many was Lew Alcindor. If it wasn't for his visit to Papa Sam Gilbert's Bel Aire mansion and the understanding that his "NIL" value could not be matched by mom and pop SJU, he wouldn't be Kareem Abdul Jabbar, SJ would have likely won a few national championships under a still young 65 year old Joe Lapchick.😉

I don't care what Lou said.....if there was no Sam Gilbert, and SJ didn't force Joe to retire, I think the Alcindor family would have preferred their very young teenager play in NYC. Perhaps it was Lou's way of splaining that Lew was never going to play for Lou 😉
The old coach holds the record for the lost opportunities with too many to mention....maybe except for Gary Payton😎
And I believe Hakeem, as well.

Note: Rankings as of April 18.

i

1. RJ Luis Jr., 6-7, SF, Jr., St. John's

The Big East Player of the Year and a second-team All-American, Luis was one of the biggest breakout stars in college basketball this past season. He averaged 18.2 points and 7.2 rebounds, leading the Red Storm to Big East regular-season and tournament titles.

2. PJ Haggerty, 6-3, PG, Soph., Memphis

A massive boost to the portal late in the window, Haggerty was one of the best guards in the country in 2024-25. He was named AAC Player of the Year and a second-team All-American after averaging 21.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists this past season.

ESPN put PJ Haggerty in 2nd ranked. PJ is a point guard. Did Staff contact him?

This is why I wanted someone to post Rick’s email, so we can make sure he knows about these guys in the portal.
