St. John's has a history of "missed opportunities".
The first of many was Lew Alcindor. If it wasn't for his visit to Papa Sam Gilbert's Bel Aire mansion and the understanding that his "NIL" value could not be matched by mom and pop SJU, he wouldn't be Kareem Abdul Jabbar, SJ would have likely won a few national championships under a still young 65 year old Joe Lapchick.

I don't care what Lou said.....if there was no Sam Gilbert, and SJ didn't force Joe to retire, I think the Alcindor family would have preferred their very young teenager play in NYC. Perhaps it was Lou's way of splaining that Lew was never going to play for Lou
The old coach holds the record for the lost opportunities with too many to mention....maybe except for Gary Payton

And I believe Hakeem, as well.

A lot of guys here are really not cut out for the portal. It would be better for their sanity -- and ours -- if they just left until May.

I am not one to give advice on drinking but it sure sounds like some people may need to hit the bottle a little more..

I will wait to see what our hall of fame coach assembles before criticizing. Some of the nonsense I’m seeing is very reminiscent of this time last year and that team wound up 31-5.

1. RJ Luis Jr., 6-7, SF, Jr., St. John's

The Big East Player of the Year and a second-team All-American, Luis was one of the biggest breakout stars in college basketball this past season. He averaged 18.2 points and 7.2 rebounds, leading the Red Storm to Big East regular-season and tournament titles.

2. PJ Haggerty, 6-3, PG, Soph., Memphis

A massive boost to the portal late in the window, Haggerty was one of the best guards in the country in 2024-25. He was named AAC Player of the Year and a second-team All-American after averaging 21.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists this past season.

Think the healthy way to look at all of this is that RJ, Sim, etc. are all part of trade-offs the staff are making for “players to be named later.” Emphasis on later.

Let’s see what happens, but the roster is far from complete.

I had Easter vision of outside chance of resurrection.

That would be huge! One less guard in the rotation so potentially more playing time and maybe more NIL to offer after losing Lee.
