Posts That Exited the SJU Portal Thred

John Fanta: "Mitchell also visited St. John's this past weekend and my crystal ball prediction is that he will end up with the Red Storm."

Really like that Darrion Williams from Texas Tech in the little I saw of him in the NCAA T. Tough kid, good shooter and scorer at 6’6.

Pimped out to the highest bidders has become the American college basketball way.
There should be law but too many hands in the jar.
I would not state it that way because that implies the kid is being used.

But, this is now professional basketball, with agents and negotiations and process.

With respect to 79 and others here who may act in these capacities, it’s their job to best represent these kids, many of whom this could be their top basketball earning opportunity in their lives. Yes, they’ll give lip service to “best fit” and “best situation” but for most kids those things will just happen to coincide with most money.

We as non athletes in our own lives often are able to reconcile these things to coincide, it’s just self interest. Nothing wrong with it. And it’s to be expected.

As fans, we want them to have a passion for OUR team. But those days are mostly over. It’s more likely that kids will learn to love their situation, year by year, if they are able to maximize their earnings. To us fans, it’s an adjustment. To them and their families, it’s long overdue.

Phraseology ought to be changed from "committed" to "contracted," as that is more accurate and reflective of the current state of professional basketball on the collegiate level.

Pro college ball prospects want to get paid top dollar. Pro college ball coaches want to win at the highest level. Players will leave and / or get recruited over. Gone are the days of loyalty, development, and tickle me feel good stories about "All American Joey" playing for the state flagship program.

Attrition and filling rosters with new players is the new norm. Four year guys are an anomaly. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Glad we still have a shot at Lee, but I'm not holding my breath. Possible he's using us as a negotiation tactic at this point, and to be honest I couldn't blame him if he chooses Florida. Plenty of advantages to choosing the Johnnies, but UF has their advantages too.

I haven't commented previously on Lee, but I badly want him for a number of reasons. Part of that is my wife is Asian (along with a very high percent of Queens) and daughter is half, so it'd be awesome to have an elite Asian player on the team representing our school and NYC. Also the PG position IMO is the most important for becoming a legit Title contender, which is the goal for this season. I don't doubt Pitino will find an experienced and solid PG regardless, and others know far more about potential alternatives than I do, but I'm not super confident we'll get someone who will put us over the edge.

Still will be stoked for this upcoming season no matter what happens, but just my thoughts.
And a high percentage of Queens is Jewish, will there be any seats available next year if he comes ?

Another Ian visit was noted as possible yesterday, so I strongly believe we land him. (Sellers too). Mitchell seems to be more aggressively shopping and frankly to me is expendable. He may want more minutes than we can provide.

Lee seems a close one, but I still feel Gators win this. If no Lee, I’ll buy more advil for the board reactions.
I imagine that their agents are doing their due diligence and establishing a price.
Just from a negotiating standpoint, if CRP says get back to me after you receive another offer, let me know before accepting.
Then over to Matt and probably Mike R, and a quick decision is then made.
Matt is invaluable here because he knows the agents and the market.
It’s good business by everyone involved. We would want that for our own children.

In all seriousness, the mega haul thing was started by a few younger fans on instagram and it made it's way to twitter. It was always about the visitors. It never really was about them committing on the spot. That was inferred and thus set people up for disappointment with unrealistic expectations.

That being said, there's going to be 5 additions...some would consider that a hefty haul. I expect two big ones this week. So perhaps that should have been in the fine print, but everyone has to be somewhat logical, as difficult of an ask that is.
True, the mega haul stuff was nonsense generated by Twitter fans and too many people ran with it. We had a large number of spots to fill and out of gate landed two to improve our scoring capacity. Subsequently we got in serious contention for a number of talented guys and are headed to more commitments this week. If we have a PG void remaining (if Lee opts for Fl), yes I will have concern, but not panic.

Making a hashtag campaign about visits and not commits is extremely stupid.
Were you not participating with it and asking questions about it on the discord etc

Let people have fun, it united the fanbase for a day...the people who took it too seriously and are bent out of shape over it now:

1. have unrealistic expectations
2. think they are entitled to know everything that is happening
3. think everything that is reported or said online is true
4. are just incapable of using their brains
5. completely irrational.

all is good - good news coming - this roster will be very very very good
