Post -- Harkless makes history

Lenn really needs a fact checker. Berry as almost everyone knows was a JUCO transfer so therefore was never a SJU freshman. Also who has questioned his effort?

Nice write up, good to see Moe & Harrison get the attention they deserve (and they've clearly earned it).

Wish Robbins would do his homework, but even without homework he should know that Walter Berry did not play as a freshmen at SJU.

As I was watching these guys last night I couldn't help thinking that with all of the talent these freshman have along with all of the time they'll get this year we could well be spending the next four years watching one or two guys vying for the all time St. John's scoring title -- yep, I'm being selfish and hoping they'll stay four years!

Congratulations to both players. I was super excited when Moe committed to STJs and last night I saw what I was looking forward to back then. What a way to start off his BE career. Who knows, maybe he will do this year what Hardy did for us last year? And if Harrison does the same, this season may not be as bad as we thought. Yes, I know, one game doesn't prove a thing...but it is a better start then I thought we would have in conference.

Robbins has a real problem with St. Johns now (perhaps with Lavin?) as opposed to when Norm was here and he kissed his ass. His article the day of the game implied that we would be beat, At the very least after crushing the Friars all that todays headline said about our crushing victory was St Johns beats Providence. the body of the article hardly mentioned how good the team playedas opposed to the ESPN article and the Daily News. The sooner we get a different beat writer for the team the better

I always thought Robbins was one of the handful that actually didn't push the Koolaid when it was apparent Norm couldn't get it done. Am I thinking of someone else? Haven't had my coffee yet, so I may confused.

The only writer who came close to questioning Norm was Mike Vaccaro towards the end. Lenn only wrote puff pieces. I guess if you are covering a college team you can't really kill the coach since you do not have access to the players. If you are on bad terms with the coach you are not going to get much info. Not that Norm had much to give anyway.

For what it is worth Lenn did criticize Norm in private to a bunch of BEB posters who met him one night.

And then it took him less than a year to rip Lavin in a piece earlier this year. Maybe Lenn is envious of Lavin's hair?

Must have missed it. Ripped him about what? Ineligibilities?

Sometimes Len seems to be right on target and writes a good article, and then there are times when he writes off the wall as if pushed by a mysterious force or deadline, and the article is off in space. He is not one my favorite writers...

I was thinking of Vaccaro and confused Robbins with him because I remember hearing that story about Robbins ripping Norm privately. Thanks for the info.

ESPN Rumors had a piece on Mo today with another impressive point about his achievement the other night:

Moe Harkless was the No. 39 recruit in the 2011 class, so it's not as if anyone should be all that surprised that he can perform at the college level. But his rapid emergence for St. John's has been worth watching.

The 6-foot-8 freshman has stepped up in a big way for a Red Storm program that saw its strong incoming crop dwindle in the offseason. Not only is Harkless carving out a role in his first college campaign, he's leading Steve Lavin's squad in scoring and rebounding. And, as ESPN's Jeremy Lundblad points out, he erupted in the Big East opener against Providence, becoming one of only five major conference freshmen with a 30-10 game in the past five seasons. The other four guys on that list are either in the NBA or well on their way. The question now is: can Harkless keep this pace up? If he can, St. John's could cause problems for some teams down the line.

Link didn't embed. The others are Sullinger, JJ Hickson, Bill Walker and Michael Beasley.  He also points out that Mo is third in scoring from the Power 6 conferences behind Tony Wroten and Jordan Tolbert at Texas Tech.

I'd never rate a player off his best game, or his worst. Harkless had a very nice game, displayed amazing tweener type quickness (too quick for a forward to guard him, too big for a guard), and amazing athleticism (did you see the overthrown alleyoop that he controlled and tipped in). But to be honest, the Providence defense sucked. I wouldn't anoint him just yet, but he is by all means going to be a very important piece of the SJU renaissance.

Agre, but in comparison to his peers, he's in the top 13 at worst in the big east in 5 categories, those being ppg, rpg, steals, blocks and fg%. Not shabby for a freshman.

He and Harrison are breaking away from the pack, but let's also remember that cumulative stats are in part due to the fact that our freshman are getting 35+ minutes per games. All encouraging, but they are still freshmen. Exciting to see this amount of talent on the floor, with more to come.

scouts don't get 100 games to rate players. You only need one look at Moe to deduce that he's a thoroughbred in every way. His height is legit (not an overblown 6'6") and there isn't a thing he can't do. He hardly even sweats for godsake. We should treasure every game we have him because he has NBA written all over him. Now we just have to get some more kids to believe the way he did by broadcasting his example everywhere. Regardless of Lavin's problem this ain't Podunk and the kid chose us over UCONN!!!!
