Paultz, since you love butting in all the time when I'm not even talking to you.

Do you sit all night and day looking for news to post on here?

Moose, I thought the substitution pattern was too simplistic. Like line changes in hockey. I thought the defensive schemes were weak again. For a team that supposedly likes to press defensively, I think this may be the third game in a row that I was more impressed with our opponents pressing D.

Totally get that and agree I don't like line change subs. But didn't the run happen when the starters came back?

But I think you lose some fluidity to teamwork on court.

I'm with you Knight. I felt like he was staggering Heron & Figueroa earlier in the year and he doesn't seem to be doing that as much anymore. I really like that he's making sure everyone is getting game experience (it will be needed) but I agree about dropping the hockey substitutions.

I also have a bad feeling about opponents pressing us. We have not looked good against it. Most of our guys can handle the ball a little but we don't have a genuinely good ball handling pg who can get us through. Very happy to have Rutherford and Dunn but neither are at the level we're going to need when elite athletes from high major programs are pressing us. It's concerning to me but I doubt that there's anything I"m noticing that the coaching staff isn't so hopefully they're working on it. Also I don't think I want the ball in Dunn or Rutherford's hands if the game is close and the other team is fouling. I assume we try to get it to Heron/Figueroa in those scenarios?

If we have a lead at the end of games, I want to see Caraher & Dunn on the floor in place of Roberts & Rutherford. Need our best foul shooters out there. Roberts is a bricklayer from the line.

I don’t mind the mass subbing because the truth is that we have no Ponds on this team that can’t be subbed out. We have LJ and Heron and neither are irreplaceable while out for a chunk of time. Heron has had several games where he’s gotten almost nothing done. LJ is a solid all around player but is not the precision machine of a player you can’t live without in the game for some time.

I disliked the loose defense and defensive rebounding as well as all the turnovers. I don’t feel mass subs hurt us because we don’t have any irreplaceable, clutch guy out there. That will change over coming years, but we will need our bench big time this year. Play em now..

CMA always experiments with lineups in non-conference play against the "cupcake" teams and he's going to play most players and do mass substitutions to give guys opportunities to show what they can do and figure out who his core guys are going to be. It's also good because as the season goes on guys get worn down on teams that play short rotations, that won't happen with CMA guys because the star players will be fresh, that's why his teams typically play better in the later months.

And also as conference play get closer, starting with that Arizona game, you'll see that bench start to shorten and the mass substitutions won't happen as much, if he does it at all. LJ, Champaigne, Heron will all play 30+ MPG once conference play starts. Dunn will probably get around 25 MPG, and when Steere returns whoever wins that big man battle between him and Roberts will probably be the other guy that gets around 25 MPG. Everybody else will vary from about 7 - 15 MPG.
When I looked at schedule beginning of year was hoping we could win one of Vermont, ASU, West Virginia & Arizona and go into BE season 10-3. Don't think we are going to beat Zona out West so West Virginia win would be huge. Doable but we likely need very solid games from all of Heron, Figgy, Roberts & Julian to do it.
And Dunn I suspect as well.

Dunn is going to be really good. I can tell he's just a little rusty right now and getting use to playing PG. He's the best player on the team right now at attacking the rim and drawing fouls and one of the better on ball defenders. Once he slows down a little bit and cuts down on careless turnovers, he's going to get more minutes and really be a great contributor. Getting him that late in the Spring and getting him eligible this season was a HUGE steal.

The game was over very early and it became more of a "teaching scrimmage" . The were the mass substitutions and the coaches were all involved talking with individual players. Van was working with Roberts during halftime warm ups and Ron Brown was chatting with him during a time out while CMA was dealing with those on the floor. Van talked with Justin when he came out in the second half. TJ was directing some of the defense as they seemed to be working on some new things.

Some weird lineups with LJ being the "big" man.

Turnovers were a big problem and not controlling rebounds BUT again they shared the ball and had 24 assists for 29 baskets.

The team needs to play teams like this with an attitude that it will be a 40 point victory mindset. After game team huddle at center court had one livid Heron--he has really taken on the leadership role.

Took a look back, this was the most lightly attended regular season home game (attendance: 2,845) since December 8, 2008 when we beat an NJIT team in the midst of an historic losing streak. 2,808 fans attended that game. The game featured a long delay while they had to replace a basket.

Early on, CMA said we looked like "25 minutes of hell and 15 minutes of what the hell is that".
That's exactly what we saw last night

Unreal how empty

Easily saw a friend on opposite side of court

Then watched a big lead whittle away

And that’s tickets sold. There weren’t 2,000 people actually in the building.

Truth be told told this staff deserves a great deal of fan support , much more so than any other staff since Louie retired. There are working super hard in all aspects and are putting a good product on the floor. Last year we either knocked or defended the staff for playing the starters the entire cup cake tour and then had no bench when BE games rolled around. I would much rather see coach play his entire bench during the weaker part of the schedule and provide everyone with game experience than win by a greater margin and have no bench ready when the time comes , and it will. At least we all know that Dunn, Caraher, Earlington, Williams and Damian have all been in game situations and the staff has a solid idea of what they can expect from them.

I agree. There were the usual ten students “using” the free tickets being subsidized by the rest of us (who are left) who have endured massive increases.

Maybe next year Cragg should raise prices another 40 percent on the diehards and pay students to attend.

Can't really fault common fans e.g. students who aren't diehards for coming out yet. It was against a terrible team from a terrible conference and we just got blown out recently by ASU. I expect a solid crowd for West Virginia...you guys know me, I've been saying for years we need to get more real programs like WVU, FSU, Florida, LSU, Tennessee, etc. to MSG. Those are the types of games students will go to. But we also need to prove we can beat a nationally relevant team first before fans are going to be even a bit sold. This is one of those games we will need to find a way to win if we want attendance to grow. Again, national pundits picked us to be in or near the basement. We have to prove them wrong first.
