The best thing I can say is at least we won. Posh saved us. Wusu another strong game, Mathis had his moments. No way Champ makes the league next year. He should come back but he won’t.
LOL, Scouts don't look at one game.  They look at potential and the entire body of work.  Champ is 6'8, can shoot the ball, can play multiple positions, and has improved greatly defensively, which was the one knock on his game.  He could sit out the rest of the season and at the very worst he's going to get a 2-way contract.  He's a future NBA player that's not even debatable.

Improved greatly defensively?  Really?

Very fortunate to get the W. Once again, Up 81-72 with under 3 mins left, we commit three of the silliest turnovers imaginable. Casey Jacobsen said it best after the last Wusu charge. “This is what happens when there is no plan.” That was so spot on. And just like that it’s a two point game.

Monmouth was the latest team to take advantage of the lack of boxing out on the defensive end.

Too many holes in this team to live up to the preseason pick to finish fourth. That is very disappointing considering we are returning the Big East leading scorer and the Defensive POY. Thank god for Posh, otherwise we would be right there with Georgetown in the cellar.

Take away Posh, and this team couldn't win more than a handful of game this season. He is the MVP of the team so far and it's not even a close race. Champ still not right. Excellent game from Smith. Champ has to be play like an all-American from the opening tip or forget the NCAA.

Absolutely, his steals are up and fouls are down, his feet are noticeable quicker than last year and he's guarding guards more this year.  Broadcasters have commented on his improvement a few times this year.  Have you not been watching the games and looking at the stats?

With the exception of that scare at the end, we were in control the entire game. All in all, I'm satisfied with the win. We're not as bad as some of you guys think we are, and we're definitely not as good as many of you thought we were before actually seeing us play. We've got flaws for sure, mostly up front, but if Nyiwe, Stanley and Soriano can collectively give us some production every night, I still think we can contend for a tourney bid.

I thought Champy looked a bit hesitant tonight.

Ehhh. I’d argue it’s debatable. I mean sure he’ll most likely sign to an NBA team.

but why should I think his fate will be any different from that of his brothers… who played a little but is mostly in the G League.

if you are arguing he will touch an NBA floor at least once. I probably agree. But I’m not sure he’s gonna stick

You know your a REALLY good player when your stat line is....

16 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals, and 3 blocks in 37 minutes with only 2 turnovers.

And some people say your bad and not ready for the NBA.  LOL!

The guy did a little bit of everything tonight.  4 steals and 3 blocks would be a career high for a lot of players.

Just sound like a bunch of wimpering pansies. Good win overall. Still things to clean up.  Rotation got shortened, that was new.

Macro view: good win, quad 2 win

micro view: late game execution lacked, really by means of silly turnovers.

Good thing is: it is all correctable. Still no bad losses, and you took care of business. No it wasn’t pretty the way it ended, but this isn’t a beauty contest.

Great shooting against Kansas, and Indiana not so great against Monmouth  In those games he has four steals and six turnovers. Right in line with last season. Let’s wait until the Big East season is over to look at stats.

Champagnie is not coming back so anyone who lets that creep into their head at all is setting themselves up to be upset.

Him just touching the floor is better than what 97% of other college basketball players will do.  Just kind of funny we got guys here that know more than actual NBA scouts and GMs.

You can wait until whenever you want, he's still going to be in the NBA next year.  Anybody thinking any different is lying to themselves.

I hope he does. He is a great kid.

Champ is a professional shooter.
That skill will get him in NBA…maybe first round, but probably second.
However, he is not going to be the team leader like Posh or even Wusu.
He isn’t going to demand that he get the ball so he can take over at a critical point.
He is credited frequently with playing inside the character or nature of any given game. that is fine in that
his shooting may determine the outcome,…. but not his will power.
And that is the difference between him and Posh.
And absent the guards looking to give him the ball, or coach calling his number in the huddle, you get a game like this where Wusu is executing an offensive play 3 out of the last 5 times at game end and Posh the other two times.
Wusu saved the Champgnie sloppy offensive effort with 30 seconds to go.
Posh makes the extra effort on defense.
In sum, I am so glad we have Champagnie like any sane fan.
We dont win anything without his stable presence and scoring. But
I dont expect him to suddenly become our heart and soul leader.

I agree with everything you said.

However, it's a Quad 2 win now.  Simply by virtue of playing in the MAAC, I expect Monmouth's NET rating to drop.  Iona's good, obviously, but they just won't have much else, in terms of competition.

I expect this to be a Quad 3, at best, by Selection Sunday.  Of course, that made this win all the more important.

Seems almost unanimous in here that the team is not very good, is mistake prone, makes untimely miscues at critical times, can’t put teams away, etc.

In spite of all those things and more, they just beat a Monmouth team that was on a seven game win streak and had won 5 straight road games.

The loss to KU wasn’t unexpected and even without Mathis, they almost beat Indiana. Based on what I have seen over the years, MA will get his bench going and Julian will get back in his groove. Turnovers were reduced to only 12.
It wasn’t pretty but they still won which good teams need to learn to do when they are having an off game. Maybe SJU isn’t as bad as they look right now.

Just need to win these next two while getting the back end of the rotation in the groove. The litmus test is coming up soon at Seton Hall.

Quality win.  Monmouth is going to get a lot of wins this year, their guards are legit.

yep, I agree that Monmouth will get a lot of wins this year in the MAAC but I disagree if anyone believes that Monmouth has Big East talent, or the ability to have a winning record in the Big East or any other P6 conference.
