(POST GAME) DePaul, Wed., Jan. 5, 6:30p, FS-1

The game was well played.  Champ is punching his ticket to the lottery.  Don't sell DePaul short.  They're good.

I’m happy. We won.  Terrible foul shooting though.  Nice to have 3 guys put up nice points instead of just 1.   Hopefully this is the start of a great big East run for us. I’m optimistic.  But then again. I’m always optimistic.

Good win especially being short handed. Despite the manpower disadvantage, we should have won easily. A lot of missed layups and too much basket trading when we had them down 6-10 points. That’s when you need to get stops and extend lead.

Anway, much needed win.

If we're up 6-10 points, I'll trade baskets for the rest of the game.  It was DePaul that got hurt by that.

It's going to be another mediocre year. We'll have a couple of good wins against some top BE teams but in the end we'll be lucky to get to the NIT. Anyway, I'll never stop watching. St. John's is my team.

We will go as far as Champ's back will allow him to carry us.

This was the kind of game you need your star to show up and he did big time.
Every game for the rest of the year is gonna be “that kind of game”.

we struggle offensively and we need Champ to show up on a nightly basis. Without him putting up 25+ it’s gonna be tough for us to beat some of the better teams in the conference

glad to be 1-0

As both this game and the Pitt game showed us, without Champagnie showing up big time, it will be tough for us to beat anyone

Thank God for Champagnie!! But, if we are going to make the tournament this year our defense needs to improve and we need Posh and one other player to become more consistent and proficient shooters and offensive players. It can’t just be Champ for 30 every night. Still of ton of work for the staff to do with this team. I guess we gave to give them a break because they were idle for so long and unable to practice but they need to figure it out fairly quickly.

Even with Champ having a huge game, it was tough to beat a team that will finish at or near the bottom of the conference. Huge 3 by Addae-Wusu sealed it. Although wheeler did his best to try to make it interesting by throwing the ball away on the inbounds. Lucky the Depaul player stepped out of bounds.  It was a good come from behind win against a Depaul team that has nice pieces and looked much more athletic than us.  Still, I cringe when I see the unforced errors and multiple knuckleheaded plays each game. This stuff didn't happen over the past 2 seasons.

Everyone made contributions to tonight's win, even on small plays that don't show up or loom large in the box score.  Total team effort.

We've got a lot of Quad 1 games coming up. We will get a very good idea of what this team can do after the PC game. Can Soriano challenge Watson and can we turn PC over which Durham will do. Key is whether we can stay with PC on the boards.

We had 8 guys tonight and assume we'll have one or two more Saturday. Big, big game.

Zach B reported in the Post that Coburn was out with a back injury (he didn't specify if it was something serious, or just back spasms), not Covid-19.

I thought Soriano had one of his better games. He was a real rim defender tonight and pulled down some man sized rebounds in traffic. His really gave it his all.

We make some of those layups or FTs and we win going away.

I’ll take the win!
Free Throws were pretty much a wash, though.  Yeah, we could have pulled away if we made some more, but DePaul could have won, had they done the same thing.

Ray Morgan posted that Soriano had a big game. Nine boards and three blocks in 17 minutes hasn’t been done in many years by a SJU center.

It wasn't pretty but we haven't started 1-0 in conference in a few years. This was a game that we could easily have lost.

Let's take it, enjoy it and hope we get some of our kids back very soon because we need more depth off the bench.

A nice birthday gift for the real King of Queens, Coach C!!
