The system is not working and we are horrible on defense because we dont have that good players. Other teams score easily on us because we just arent good and cant compete at the big east level with our roster. As Coach Carnesecca has always said its about the players, and right now we do not have the players to compete sadly

There's no chemistry on this team. The JC recruits are not adjusting well both offensively and defensively.  We can't fault the true freshmen but Toro, the eldest player, has zero leadership skills.
To day this team needs an inside man presence is an understatement. I hope our recruiting picks up with a stud who leaves it all on the floor.  Right now there is no player willing to dive for a ball or assert themselves.

This is the first time that I have started to question CMA's approach. The 40 minutes of hell defense allowed Creighton 59 points on 60% shooting and assists on more than three quarters of their baskets in the first half. Our defense also generated a grand total of 3 turnovers during that time. I concentrated on watching our defense during the first half. Anytime a Creighton player took a jab step or made a ball fake, our guy would leave his feet and the Creighton player would easily go around him. We don't rotate well when that happens and Creighton would often end up with an open guy for an easy basket. We also switch everything, so we often end up with a guard on a Creighton big man for an easy basket. In short, a smart well coached team  easily carved our defense to shreds because we were not fundamentally sound.

Lord knows how many points Creighton would have scored if Marcus Z. had played. I think that part of our problem is that we try to play at warp speed at both ends of the floor. If we slowed it down just a tad, we would play more in control and be better off.

I am starting to believe that CMA's record of not having a losing season is in serious jeopardy.

thanks for above posts!
realistically who - including  the Coach - really cares about streaks. We should just be focusing on improving the program, the team and gathering as many Ws as possible.
21 months in the Anderson regime - I say he needs another 21 months before we critique what's happening   BECAUSE
this was a bigger undertaking than anyone imagined. Too many lousy to poor years; too many years of broken recruiting pipelines.
that's what I discern.
and like it or not we need to keep plodding along - I like our AD, our HC, our kids - just needs more time to rebuild the infrastructure from bottom up.
Check back in October 2022
all the best.

I disagree. Posh is certainly willing to dive for balls. You may not agree with the results, but it would be difficult to play much harder than Posh.

Agree re:true freshmen...Both play hard all th time...Posh is toughest guy on team

One of my pet peeves since the Mullin regime was weak side help and double teaming at the top of the key. Our big man switches to guard their guard and our guard is left down low guarding their center. Does double teaming make sense against an excellent three point shooting team?

As an ex coach I would have called a timeout after Jefferson and O'Connell both beat our guards downcourt for an easy basket.

Some poor crosscourt passing on our fast breaks.

I could not believe the room Moore allowed Kalkbrenner underneath, at least two to three feet away on defense. Why?

Once again we allowed a player averaging 5 points a game to score wide open threes - O'Connell with 16 points.

Where was Williams in the first half?

Creighton was fast to the ball chasing down loose balls and long rebounds.

I think the long layoff and the canceling of the DePaul game have taken a significant toll on this team.
But give Creighton credit. They came out and played hard.

Prolonged layoff? Lol. We need 3 point sharpshooters azs and a tall fat guy in the middle. This team sorry to say rots

So true. And the coaching staff could use improvement. Alas Pitino is not available

Defense is largely effort and coaching. We need improvement in both right now. Never ready to give up on my team, but today was discouraging because we played lousy defense (again) and got beaten to almost every loose ball.  We need to come out next game against Butler as if we're playing in an elimination game.

Totally agree. But its also about level of talent. Some players are just way more gifted than others and can score at will on them. These seems to be the case with a lot of the mathcups we have against other Big East Teams.

After watching last years team and this years team its so evident how much better last years was. You all love to rip on LJ and Mustapha but with them we were miles and miles better than what we are now. I know Mustapha was hurt but with him and LJ in the lineup it opened things up for our role players. Those 2 and rutherford made us so much better defensively as well.

This team is incredibly frustrating. There seems to be a large lack of chemistry, but more so the play is disjointed. Defense is simply atrocious, not an understatement. SJU is supposed to live by their defensive pressure and turnovers forced and they simply can't stay in front of anyone, can't switch on screens, can't guard the 3, can't do anything well on defense. It's beyond discouraging.

There is an incredible lack of effective talent on this roster.

We have clammored for a few big men for 2 decades now. The problems are the same year in and year out. It's always talking about next year.

It's hard to live and die with this team, supporting them every year, buying merchandise, buying season tickets...and getting this kind of product. Just tired and frustrated.
