(POST GAME) #18 Seton Hall (MSG), Sat. Jan. 18, NOON, FOX / 570 WMCA

With LJ on the bench, not many options for us at the end. They ain’t letting Heron get anything close to an open look, and who else is gonna take the 3? Nothing we can do, we’re short on talent. Big on heart though.
Yeah, I agree. I just hate that Figueroa basically took himself out of the game by committing about 3 silly fouls today.
LJ commits too many silly fouls in most games
Result might have been different had he been on the floor at the end
Loved the play of Earlington and Roberts
Somebody needs to teach Josh how to make a free throw
We played a very good game - good enough to win most nights
But Powell was just awesome in the second half
And we made Gill look like Wilt Chamberlain on defense

What else is new?

I could see CMA moving on from Steere, Sears and Caraher if he can bring in better players. That’s why staff is still out there recruiting. Would like to get McMillan and Gray. We need more talented players here.

I would love McMillan and Gray. I would also like to add a solid shooter.

So I have a different view; we did not lose this game because Roberts missed free throws or we didn’t make 3’s; Roberts shoots 33% and everyone knows we are offensively challenged. We were let down by our defense and our own unintelligent play. Examples, how many times in the 2nd half did Powell drive some 20-30 feet to lay the ball in with no real challenging rotation to maybe pick up a charge or make him pass? Too many. How many open set your feet jump shots did SHU get in the 2nd half after virtually none in the 1st. SHU had 15 turnovers at the half and not a one or even a sniff of one at the 10 minute mark of the 2nd half. After a tenacious impressive effort on D in the 1st half, we came out the opposite in the 2nd. Lack of focus and effort.
Unintelligent plays, two examples, down the stretch, Figueroa gets his 4th foul at somewhere around the 3 minute or so mark reaching 30 feet from the basket with SHU in no kind of offensive set, sending them to the line for nothing. He then fouls out a minute or so later.
A bit after the Figueroa 4th foul, Dunn commits, IMO, an equally unnecessary foul around mid court, diving on a player on the ground. Not a bad play in the 1st half of a game but horrible in that situation, you surround the player and make him make a play from his back, you don’t bail him out and send him to the line.
I don’t believe in moral victories and this team snatches defeat from the jaws of victory. No reason we are 1-5 in BE play except we beat ourselves. Others may disagree but I am sure I will make people on the board happy because I am out of here for a while. Just too frustrating to me and that is on me and my fanaticism, I get that.

Would like to get a grad transfer for that. Someone with some experience taking a shot in a big spot.

Seton Hall has had better players than we have for a decade . No matter who our Coach is .., Anderson needs a big man who can play and shoot and we need a PG who has BE talent .. lacking a real stud PG since Erick Barkley ... it would be nice to know if Steere can shoot foul shots . We know Roberts can’t . Why didn’t Anderson give him a few minutes in second half ?
I don’t know if I’m just lost from the emotion of the game... but are there people here who really think the effort was lacking today? I’m surprised to have read that in the game thread. I thought we battled hard. Made some big mistakes late on defense trying to get steals instead of playing straight up defense, but I thought the effort was there for 40 minutes. We lost to a better team who made good adjustments at the half. And Roberts killed us at the line. A shame cause he’s so good at everything else
Agree. We didn't fold either. Proud of our guys.

52pnts in a half is wayyyyyy to much, I agree there.

I agree with both of you guys. Once Seton Hall took the lead our guys could have folded but they didn’t. Powell just took over the game and we just don’t have a player like that.

I look at things a bit differently. Our preseason Big East rank was 9 or 10. Seton Hall is nationally ranked and undefeated in the Big East. We played hard and stood toe to toe with them right down to the last buzzer. Our team is very competitive and our program will only get better in time with CMA at the helm.

Am I disappointed with the loss? Absolutely!! But I see a lot of good in this team and truly believe that the future of our program is very bright.

Regardless of our record how can you not enjoy this teams effort. I know I will all season.
Have to agree with Casey Jacobson's analysis regarding our aggressiveness at half court at the close of the game. Rutheford, who I thought played a hell of a game, overplayed Powell beyond the top of the key., allowing him to drive and score. Fiqueroa reaches across his body and fouls his man out by half court.
One key point in the second half was Williams' poor defense on Powell.
Welcome back Roberts. Even though he missed his foul shots they were not over his head. Finally held the ball in front and shot softly. They will come.
Dunn's got some big ones drriving against Gill but made some key scores towards the end.
Got to give credit to Willard. Had his team speed the ball up court in the second half before our defense could catch up.

Dude!! This team is still playing with heart and grit. Losing sucks, but we’ve still won more than most of us expected and have played some of the best teams in the country very tightly. I have never been one for “moral victories”, but I’m putting that aside for this year. Don’t go nowhere, we need your pleasant disposition on the board lol.

The future will be bright, cma will bring some elite talent.
This year this is who he has, gotta hope their better in February, because yeah they bmight be good kids, but they're not that good.
I couldn't do the first year of a rebuild. I'd be like that S Carolina coach on the sideline.

We are going to be tied with DEPaul in a few minutes . They are hammering Butler . 1-5 again in BE play . I had a fantasy today that in this game , we still had Ponds . Powell opts for 4 years and is a POY candidate . Ponds plays 3 years and is hanging on in the G League . I always thoughtPonds was a little bit better player than Myles but , it’s very close . Powell always had better supporting cast . Maybe we win this game with Ponds ? It’s only a fantasy .

"Somebody has to teach Josh how to make a free throw." The staff has changed his shooting over his head to holding the ball out front. He shot it softly today. He'll get better.

Much to my chagrin only got home in time to see Willard's post game interview. Just finished reading the entire game thread and was checking on-line during the game when I could. I realize our BE record is what it is (horrible) but can't be upset with our team today. Hall is a top 15 team and we played them extremely tough. Biggest problem with team this year is lack of a point guard. If we had one we'd have at least two more wins and be in the hunt for a bid. Good news is we bring in two pure point guards next year along with a year's experience in coach's system for our returning guys. Disappointed with our BE record, but encouraged with our coach, our team's effort and our future. Only bad games have been Georgetown and ASU.
