Ponds Plans

I'm sure the year hasn't worked out like Shamorie hoped to date but that doesn't mean he shouldn't leave to take his best shot at the NBA. On the positive side, the NBA is full of second round picks who make a team. Granted the Knicks are not the best example in that the talent level is so low, but they have both this year and last year's 2nd round picks (Mitch Robinson & Damyean Dotson) playing prominent roles plus the undrafted Alonzo Trier who has solidified his position in the teams' future. Trier by going undrafted was able to find the team he felt gave him the best chance to stick. Nothing saying Shamorie won't find a team that likes what he brings to the table and not sure his chances will be any better a year from now. Just my opinion.

Stating the obvious, but it seems there isn't any chance he'll return. Obviously would love to have him back, but I'm not even considering that as a possibility.

Took a quick look at his stat line for this year vs last year, and to be honest it's tough to say which is better. Maybe this year is a little better overall across the board, but not the improvement most of us (and maybe Shamorie) hoped for. Not sure if he's been playing hurt, or just overachieved last year against Duke/Nova/Marquette. Maybe a bit of both.

Anyways, I was really hoping to see him get drafted first round but that looks doubtful at this point. I hope he can at least get into the second round and then stay on an NBA roster. Shamorie I'm sure has a good idea of what to expect and we'll respect his decision. He has given a LOT to our program and needs to do what is in his best interests. I'll be rooting for him regardless of where he ends up.

I'd be curious to hear what others think, but to me the second half of the season has been very strange watching Ponds play. He's been so passive on offense to the point he seems disinterested at times. I know he usually gets his numbers, but it just seems like that killer instinct and urgency are gone.

I've also been really bothered by his poor attitude on the court, resulting in multiple technical fouls.

It's just been really frustrating to see play out.

I am a huge fan of Shamorie's. It is very difficult to make it from the PSAL to the NBA for a number of reasons. Shamorie has had a tremendous college career. I can't explain what has been going on with his performance lately but I hope it doesn't impact his NBA chances. I also would like to see him graduate whether that is now or some time in the future. Hoping for a big game from him tomorrow.

It's also important to take a step back and realize how much we will miss this kid. Despite our lofty expectations, his this year Big East rankings:

#3 in scoring, #2 in assists, #1 in steals, #1 in assist/TO ratio, #6 in minutes played.

He's one of the best we will ever have.

Without him we don't win 4 games in conference.

I hope he realizes that there is no shame in going to school and playing for 4 years. The Pros will still be there.

But that's just wishful thinking on the part or selfish fans. How does it benefit him? If he's already graduating in 3 years and improved as much as his game will allow, he has no reason to not go pro next year.

Precisely. Don't substitute your interest as a fan for the interest of the player. If he gets hurt next year do you lose your job? He owes us nothing.

Love Ponds, but his game is not NBA ready. He still has room to improve and can continue to grow into his body.

We can beat the pros and cons to death on Ponds, but it is moot. He won’t return.

100% disagree that he has room to improve at this level. Maybe I'm putting it wrong, he has nothing left to prove. He already led the big east in scoring last year and was third this year. 2nd in assists this year and first in steals. What more does he have to improve on? You could make the argument that every college basketball player has room to improve, even lottery picks.

He can improve his 3 point shot, he needs to get stronger to handle the pro game, he can improve his decision making when it comes to fouling three point shooters, he needs to show more respect for the refs, and he needs to bring it whenever he is on the court.

I agree that he won't (and shouldn't) return
I also believe that he wouldn't be an NBA caliber player if he stayed in college another year
He's a great player but he's too short and doesn't shoot consistently well enough
He was often M.I.A. quite a bit in critical games (several scoreless halves of games)
No knock on Shamorie but there are a lot of great college players now playing in Europe
If going to college prepares you for employment, he is ready to go and make money overseas

I hope the knicks or Nets take a chance on him in the second round. I mean he would sell more tickets ( being the SJU player on the New York team) while helping out a team.

Anyway I hope he kills it in the Big East tournament.

Me too. But in all fairness, no one is going to pay just to see him in the NBA.

He will be a grad student next year if he comes back so he can take a small course load and stop spending classes in the spring if he wanted.[/quote]

Maybe he'll grad transfer. LOL

Don't know if he'll make it to the NBA or not. If he doesn't, I wonder if he'll regret not enjoying one more year in the spotlight.

He may make it to the league, or he may drift into obscurity. He may never see this much fanfare for the remainder of his life.

Just my thoughts. Must be a tough decision. I wish him the best.
