Pointer Reflects on Lavin & NBA Shot

Offense is definitely his detriment. We know he can make steals and slash to the basket. Don't know if that is enough. Has to be drafted by a winning franchise and used mainly as a defensive player. Teams like the lowly Knicks need scorers.

The kid's a class act who will work his ass off for any team willing to take a shot on him. If I'm a Coach I'd want him on my team.

Pointer is a Latrell Sprewell in the making. (In terms of potential not personality) Sprewell was never a good 3pt shooter but came into the NBA as a so called defensive specialist then became a scorer. Like him Pointer can score. Pointer also has a nice looking shot. The 3 pointer I'm convinced is a mental thing for Pointer.

This squad was easy to like and Pointer had such a breakout year. Most of the time he was the best athlete on the floor by far, and that could carry him into the NBA. One thing is clear is that he should attend the Reggie Miller flop camp this summer to work on his skill at drawing offensive fouls.

Anyone who crapped on Lavin as a person should read the next Pointer quote about 20 times, or until it sinks in:

“He did a lot for me, just being there for me,” Pointer said. “When I needed something, he was there for me. When I needed someone to talk to, you could always text him. He hit you with long text messages and cheer you up. Coach Lavin was a big influence on my life. He’s there whenever you need him.”

It is for the above reasons that I believe that Lavin's future will involve coaching. Great coach or not, great recruiter or not, it's clear that he greatly enjoys mentoring and forming close relationships with his players. It's an immense talent of his to be an authority figure to kids, part parent, part friend, part coach, and maintain their respect and caring while holding them up to academic and social standards. As a guy without kids of his own, beyond W's and L's, I really respected how he guided his only 4 year class of students to degrees as well as modest success on the court.

Really hope the Pointer finds his way onto an NBA roster. Good luck to him

Pointer also has a nice looking shot. The 3 pointer I'm convinced is a mental thing for Pointer.

Nice looking shot? He has amazing speed, quickness, and leaping ability. His timing on defense for blocks is great. He also has quick hands to create turnovers. In my humble opinion his shot needed a lot of work. He shot it awkwardly. If he fixes it, he's in the NBA or high European league.

Fortunately for him, the jump shot is something you can improve. i.e. see Patrick Ewing. But Dom has to re-work his jump-shot and re-work it soon.

I think I read somewhere that free throw shooting was a better predictor of future shooting than three-point shooting. Also fortunate for him, his free-throw shooting improved from 54% his freshman year to 73% his senior year (and unfortunately flat compared to 73% his junior year). So he has hope.

Just keep on working on it kid!

dom spent time at a clinic last summer working on his shooting mechanics. when he's behind the 3pt line he's thinking and hesitating. He looks uncomfortable. A few feet in he has a nice stroke and his stroke at the FT line is effortless.

Love what you do with the site Paul, but I have to disagree.

Spree was an accomplished scorer coming out of Bama. And that includes shooting, not just slashing to the rim. Look at his stats senior year... 39% on 170 attempts. That's a far cry from Dom's 8% on 25 shots.

Desco I'm not saying Dom would hit at a 39% clip if he took 170 shots, but rest assured he'd shoot way better than 8%. My guess is that he'd be in the 30-35% range.

He ended his career with a lot of assists and a solid assist to turnover ratio. This is an overlooked attribute he's displayed here.

Wow, minor point but I guess I cannot catch a break. I never said Dom would be a good 3pt shooter. His 3pt shooting is an aberration and it is ridiculous to argue that. I said Dom has a nice looking shot. Actually what BK.. said about FT shooting supports what I am saying. On the line he worked it over his career until it is now effortless. And you are incorrect to say that Dom was "just slashing to the rim." Dom's 54% FG was a lot of slashing and dunks but he also hit plenty of shots from around the FT line which was one of our goto spots for offense (specifically Pointer) and many of those barely grazed the net as they went in. Pointer penetrating and pulling up as well as getting hit off the pass. He also had an option on the baseline which he took maybe 20% over driving to the rim and was very consistent with it.
If you look at Dom shooting inside the arc he's got a nice shot and he can get it off quick. Also has good body control which is all you are seeing in the NBA finals including many of the 3pt shots and almost everything Lebron puts up.

Sprewell was never a good 3pt shooter in the NBA. Also not sure how old you are but when Sprewell came into the NBA he was a guy that many said was too small and would have a limited role if he stuck at all. It was pretty much the consistent that he was categorized as a defensive specialist. The fact that he became a scorer and an All Star was not expected by anyone. Whether Pointer could get to that level I don't know but there aren't a lot of guys in the NBA that have his combination of gifts and if you look at the NBA finals there are really good big men sitting while the smaller guys (6'6"-6'9") are doing the damage. And MVP Curry @ light framed 6'3" Sprewell stuck based upon a ferocious intensity that other guys with freakish speed/hops didn't bring. I think Dom has a shot to do the same and would be a fan favorite in the right situation.

Dom is still a work in progress. Hope he connects with the Knicks or Nets.

Wow what a post!
Sprewell was an all-star?
